I think especially Carlie struggles with the sacrilege that has become more blatant in the past few episodes, so I just want to give my input that I'm pretty sure canute isn't trying to say he's better than or above God. he's just seen so many deplorable things happen while he was as devout as possible that his "snap" pushed him to reject the need to wait until the afterlife for salvation from God. he has certainly lost faith, but it's more out of "if God isn't going to save those who suffer in this cruel world here and now, then I'll step up so that the innocent don't need to continue to needlessly suffer," not so much that he's better or more righteous than God
