Steins Gate Episodes 8, 9, 10 & 11 REACTIONS!

I am obviously watching this 2 years late. I watched steins;gate way back in the day when I used to be around the main character's age. Watching it back now, I realize just how cringe they were, even though it didn't seem like it at the time. Watching you guys' reactions make me realize SG might not be the best anime to recommend to someone who is still new to anime. The main cast I wouldn't say are intentionally unlikeable, but they are a bunch of misfits, which I guess does make them unlikeable to the average person. But I think it also makes them endearing to audiences who themselves might feel like misfits. Ruka is obviously trans (most of the time). Mayuri seems to be autistic. Moeka has extreme social anxiety to the point where she can't look people in the eye and talk to them, she constantly relies on her texting to communicate. Okabe is also extremely insecure and anxious, but he deals with it by creating all these delusions about being a mad scientist. It gives him courage, like having an imaginary friend gives a kid courage. Daru is obviously the shut in nerd. His incel jokes do make him insufferable, but he is still young enough that he could grow out of it I guess. Kurisu whie being the most normal one still has her issues. I do think you were a bit hard on all the characters but I also get it. Like that one thing Okabe did to Ruka was just not okay at all. I don't condone it. But scenes like those are also meant to show all this characters are damaged, and they make horrible mistakes unintentionally, I think.

Par Episode 8 features a couple of big whoopsies from you. At the start you say Moeka took the IBN 5100, but she didn't. After they don't answer her texts she takes it as a yes to borrowing it, then they notice her taking it, stopped her, sat her on the sofa and put it in its box. I imagine this is just the curse of reactors watching a lot of shows, while Steins;Gate relies on you remembering previous episodes, especially around the time travel rules. The other one is where you say Ruka must be a girl because Makise confirms it with her reaction, but this very same episode establishes (about five minutes earlier at most) that Makise has always thought Ruka is a girl. A classic example of overthinking is the Daru D-mail. At the beginning of episode 9 you're coming up with theories around the person who said Daru lost is lying, and then getting lost in the sauce, as opposed to the much simpler explanation: as a national champion of this game Faris is just too good for Daru to beat no matter what edge he's given. Every reactor seems to think Okabe is pointing at the CRT shop at the end of episode 9. I never understand why. They're talking about (presumably) a manga, he points to where one can be bought, and now it's a fan store. How do people get to the CRT shop going missing from that? The confusion around what Makise is hiding is understandable though. It's not meant to be a mystery, she's quoting online memes and is trying to cover up that she's a massive online nerd. It's why Okabe calls her an @channeler (which is their stand-in for 4chan), it's him showing he realises what she is because both him and Daru are the same.

I like the reactions, no doubt, but you guys are so caught up in your moral condemnation that you sometimes miss what's going on beneath the surface. example: ep.9 where Okabe says he values Kurisu, then tarnishes it by doing his 'mad scientist schtick'.

Yes, anime IS wild and way way WAY more perverted shit than THAT happens frequently (Hopefully someday you watch Mushoku Tensei which is an absolute masterpiece but has some pretty uncomfortable scenes). But as far as Okabe grabbing Ruka, don't take it too hard. They're extremely close friends and he literally thought he was a dude. Young guys give each other nut-taps all the time, yeah? =P The perverted stuff aside: I think you guys took Okabe way to seriously in general. All of his "mad-scientist" and what might seem like "mean-spirited" lines were literally just him being goofy and silly. Like when he said, "We'll use your grief for our experiments" or whatever, he wasn't being serious. It was a joke. Almost nothing he says is serious. It's unfortunate that you guys didn't pick up on that sooner.

Haha, look at them studying and everything for the show. TBH I too have problems to remember some of them. Probably the show where I had the most issues with this because their names are pretty weird to begin with and they like to call themselves by several nicknames as well to make things harder.

In terms of how you are faring so far, I think quite well considering the subs are a lot more confusing for people outside Japan, you would've been a lot less confused with the dub, all the references are adapted to be more Western so you could've gotten a good few of them, but instead because you haven't you are mistaking the odd one as part of the plot e.g they are taking the mick out of makise for being a weeb on forums, that's the reference, she quoted something nerdy from japan and was on a forum when she was alone on the PC, in the dub it's a lot more clear as they use western slang......also daru is toned back slightly lol but overall loving this watch along, can't wait for episode 12 !

Well, don't mind me then, I am only 12 episodes in and the emotional discourse presented is at odds with the message of the show. What sheer hubris to present us with a mid-season finale like that when the show clearly has hinted at bigger prospects for the character involved.

I agree Martina. I believe most of the unnecessary character exaggerations are just red herrings to distract us from the main plot and even when I got to the mid season mark, all I am left with is dumbfounded questions.

Why? It's a turning point in a single world line. There are alternate world lines where something else could have taken place. Singularity hasn't been achieved yet. There is no convergence. So I am assuming things will be fine in a diff world line that Okabe will hop onto.

I mean, you have to admit that the characters are pretty exaggerated. not only Okarin and Daru, Makise is a complete tsundere, Mayushii is unrealistically sweet, Moeka speaks to others via cellphone only haha. but that's also kinda the point I think, all those weirdos come together as lab members, accepting each other (but not without criticism! which is also very important).

Daru didn’t win as it was mentioned that knowing one move won’t guarantee a win as Ferris could have adjusted her game play to win. Basicallly all daru had was a one move advantage. And it was mayushi who answered the phone and she won’t lie 😉

I agree with some of the other comments I feel you guys are being kind of harsh with Okabe. The scene in which he tells Makise that she's his friend but then goes "Haha you got played" is just him being embarassed. Maybe Ange will relate to this but it's kind of like how boys/men are taught not to show their feelings to other people. So when we speak about emotional stuff, especially between ourselves, we do it in a kind of joking way, almost as if to say 'hey i'm not serious but kind of am haha'. As for Daru, somewhat similar feeling, he is a 19 year old making dirty jokes to his friends. I understand finding him annoying but, Carlie especially, you are kind of hard on him. I know it's not a big achievement or smth but he never actually does anything creepy phisically, only (admittedly cringe) jokes. And are you guys really the ones to talk when there's Ange making dirty jokes left and right in Kaguya-Sam. With Carlie always going "Angeelooooo" because of that (lmao btw). AND what about Carlie telling us of her tales of drawing dicks in high school ? 😂 Obviously you guys can have your opinions and this is mine. So take it as that.

I'm watching for the first time w/ u guys and my theory on Makise and her dad was that maybe her dad was obsessed w/ time traveling which eventually lead to his vanishment or abandoning his family thus Makise wasn't very cooperative with Okarin. but I guess that's like out of the window now... Other than that I'm pretty much on the same page with you guys... Makise is probably a key personnel in the dystopian future and Suzu, a trained soldier, was sent to the past to help the future which involves her dad. Similar to how terminators were sent from the future to kill John Corner? Is Makise really a future villain? or maybe she's on the good side but looks bad cuz some circumstances? no clue. btw i'm really enjoying the show. I probably couldn't watch this by myself cuz I can't stand these characters its too much for me. Like no one is 'normal' in this show but watching with you guys really helps.. I really appreciate that

Well the issue is the "poignant" scenes are kind of them just repeating the same character beats over and over but there's no way to actually contextualize it until we learn the backstories which comes later. Remember we're watching with hindsight and they aren't. There's a reason much of the show's acclaim comes from the back half. I don't think the show is actually nailing emotional beats all too well in isolation. For instance I'm only more tolerant of his antics cause I already know what's at the root of it but I don't expect many first time viewers to be receptive unless they already jive with the sense of humor and the various personality quirks.

@K_How I know what you are saying about references in the original SG, but at the same time (and only to specificate, it's only my opinion and you could agree with me or not) watching SG 0 after the last 2 ep of SG makes me feel like everything that has happened in SG 0 was irrilevant as you already know what will happen in the story; like you had spoilers of what will happen. I felt more misterious, deep, heartbreaking and shocked the whole SG 0 without seeing before the original ending of SG.

As far as how you guys are faring, some details are important to the story, some details are red herrings, and others are just jokes that sort of don't translate well if you don't get the reference. For the most part you guys definitely get what is going on, but there are definitely certain things that are tripping you up now that will become much more clear very soon

Okarin is a pretty confusing character. I won't confirm if he becomes better or easier to understand in the future. I think you two might be seeing his "dickhead" nature as something he truly means. There are several reasons why he uses the "mad scientist" persona, and I won't tell you all of them, but one that is apparent at this point in the show is that he uses it to cover up any confusion or embarrassment. For example: When he says he "cherishes Kurisu as a friend", he immediately feels embarrassed. In Japanese culture, being a friend is a rather forward and advance relationship. I'm not sure about in Australia, but a lot of "American friendships" would probably be seen as "acquaintances" in Japan. So when Okarin calls Kurisu a friend, he is saying that she really matters to him. This makes him so embarrassed he has to pull out Houyin Kyoma to shield his true feelings. If you look at Houyin Kyoma as some sort of psychological "armor", it'll explain partially why he uses it.

(Episode 9) Makise Kurisu was quoting something nerdy off the internet (can't remember what, it's been years since I played the visual novel) hence outing herself as an internet nerd/geek/@channeler. She's embarrassed about this fact about herself so she vehemently tries to hide/deny it!

If I can, I would recommend you a different way to watch this show than the 'release' way. Actually there are 2 'seasons' of SG: 'Steins; Gate' and 'Steins; Gate 0' and an episode called 23 B. The first one ('SG') has 24 ep (+ 1 OVA) and the second one ('SG 0') has 23 ep. My suggestion is the following and it requires to follow 4 simple points: 1) Watch 'Steins; Gate' until episode 22 2) Then watch 'Steins; Gate' episode 23 B (or 23 beta, or 23 alternative) 3) Then watch all 23 ep of 'Steins; Gate 0' 4) Finally finish the remaining 2 ep (23 and 24) of the original 'Steins; Gate'. Maybe this suggestion could seem weird, but you definitely will love this way of watching. When I watched this show for the first time I followed this path and I definitely can tell you that it was worth! All other reaction channels choose to follow the 'release' way of watching so it would be nice if you guys decide to follow this other path to offer something new for your viewers (as me). To conclude my suggestion, there is an application for smartphone called 'TvTime' which helps viewers to follow series and anime that you are watching; and after every episode there is a free spoiler comment section (In the section of the first ep of SG, there is a comment which explains this method of watching, so this recommendation went from there!). Sorry for the long comment or for bad english, I can't wait for your next reactions! I love you guys!
