2024-10-06 18:26:05 +0000 UTCOne of the ways the show can get harder as we get further from its release on is that it was very much based around cultural elements of the time. John Titor was a thing on the Internet in 2000. CERN was big in the news with the hunt for the Higgs Boson particle, and talk of the LHC making a black hole was very much discussed at the time. There's likely a bunch of Japanese cultural references too that fly over my head. In this way it's an "of its time" show. The writing on the food in the maid cafe is just what maid cafe's do, you get the maid to write something of your choice on your omelette. Likewise, the confusion around "he's a dude"; Anime at the time was going through a phase of "trap" characters i.e. a character who looked like a woman but was a man. I think we can all be glad anime moved on from that. I think the only thing you're actually overlooking is that in episode one they suggest that the banana isn't being microwaved (it's neither hot nor cold) and in episode two they outright say it. Also both Makise and Daru call out Okabe for making shit up, so at the very least you're meant to doubt any of what he says in mad scientist mode.

We are following the charachters, and they are completely clueless about what's going on. We're on a ride together with them. This is the best show I've ever seen in the sense of making the viewers feel what the actual characters are actually feeling

2023-03-08 21:47:25 +0000 UTCJust to clear two tropes up: Meg B already mentioned this, but Okabe has "Chuunibyou". This is a common anime trope and is the reason he acts so eccentric. The other trope is the term "trap". This one is actually very simple... usually a boy character that looks like a girl. I think the word is very fitting for it's meaning. Ruka is considered a trap.

It all seeped into pop culture, comics, manga, books, science fiction trivia, who knows if the original intention was just to troll, have fun, for profit somehow, or as an alternate reality game of sorts. That sort of thing now seems more innocuous, "innocent" compared to the contemporary equivalent going on the last few years.

Not that it was bad, but there other things at the time I was getting through. When I rewatched, I saw the first 2 episodes together, and it made a lot more sense, but even then it's still CONFUSING as heck, so don't let it rile you up too much 😂. There is a reason things were presented like this, and it will make sense for sure later on. It's payoff after payoff, even if it doesn't seem like it now, the details you don't know are details come together. Can't get too much into it or point out things without hinting at things. I REGRETTED watching the first episode and dropping it for awhile before watching the rest, it's so insanely awesome and became one of my top shows. Ange just said in the Attack on Titan reaction that Yuki Kaji (Eren) was his favorite voice actor. For me Yuki Kaji and several others in AOT joined my favorite voice actor, Mamoru Miyano. Miyano (Okabe, aka OkaRin, aka “Hououin Kyouma”) first came under my radar with Death Note as Light Yagami, one of the most iconic characters of anime. Here in Steins;Gate he creates yet another classic character completely unique, at first I had a hard time believing it was the same actor. the range, the emotions, the acting was unbelievably great to me.

Although, you being more pessimistic than Ange made for a hilarious post-episode discussion. Ange: ‘The microwave is the time machine!’ *silence, they stare at each other with Carlie in disbelief at the string of words that came out of Ange’s mouth* 😂 It probably also doesn’t help that after a confusing pilot it introduces a new character, Ruka, in the form of Okarin turning it into an inner monologue poem about how he is actually a guy lmao. Since the main character's names are a bit confusing: his actual name as mentioned in this episode is Okabe Rintarou. His nickname is Okarin which is taken from the first three letters of his first and last name. The name that he wants to be called is Hououin Kyouma. The girl has a similar nickname. Her name is Shiina Mayuri as mentioned in the first episode, and her nickname is Mayushii, again taken from the first letters of her last and first name.
