This is the best place to drop this content. I honestly believe Saitama was modeled upon Vash the Stampede from Trigun. The first time I saw a comedic anime protagonist ever, based on an anime from 1998 (reflecting a very Mad Max like Western Dystopian society with a few bright sparks). The characteristics of Saitama set in a superhero genre are pretty much relatable to what was present in Trigun for Vash. Both are very reticent characters, Saitama less so than Vash but the moon shots are there at the end of both seasons. Not sure if it was a homage, but it seems likely.
