Attack on Titan 4x21 REACTION!

lol jokes
The classic AoT double-cross technique! HA
Obviously late to the discussion but I rewatched AoT with your reactions so I feel like sharing my thoughts. The way I see it, Eren saw the future once he touched Historia's hand, that's a given. Then, as it's revealed in this episode, Eren saw the future with his titan powers. He started following through his visions after touching Historia. At this point, I think Eren has two choices, follow the future he saw or forsake it. If he didn't invade Marley during Willy Tybur's speech, the world would have formed a global alliance against the Eldians in Paradis island and genocide the people on the island. In fact, Eren didn't transform until Willy Tybur, Marley's secret leader, declared war against Paradis. At this point, Paradis island's global connections are weak, due to millenia of fear brought about their leaders' actions, and they cannot defend against a global force trying to eradicate them. At best, they have the Azumabito who will take their side at the exchange of having sole rights to resource extraction on the island. I don't think that would be enough force to defend their home even with them. We know from the show that other nations have developed anti-titan weapons to even the battlefield. Even Marley's forces brought an anti-titan weapon (see Pieck). Knowing all of this ahead of everyone, Eren chooses to follow the future he saw and to go through with Zeke's plan until he gets to The Paths. Then at The Paths Ymir actually has the choice on who to follow. As we've seen this episode, the first King Fritz treats Ymir as a slave as well as royal family after him. Even in death, Ymir is enslaved. Only when Eren arrived at the paths did someone try to free Ymir. That's why, I think Ymir sided with Eren. In my opinion, a lot of people despise Eren's actions due to what it means in our reality, and rightfully so, since genocide is bad. However, I think people either cannot or choose not to see beyond the "genocide is bad IRL" to understand Eren's actions. I think Eren is a representation of what happens when leaders do not use their power for the good of the people. See the Tybur family and King Fritz from 100 years ago. They both have selfish goals. The king in the walls didn't care about the future of his people, he just wants to enjoy peace in the walls until the other nations come and eradicate them. He even erased people's memories in the walls that way they cannot form a revolution against him. The Tybur family, the secret leader of Marley, agreed with this plan since they have everything to gain. They similarly don't care about the other Eldians because they instilled hatred for Eldians within Marley. This was done so that the titan shifters can't gain political power to rise against the Tyburs and invoke civil war. The result is that children like Eren, Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Connie, Sasha, Marco, Porco, Pieck, Marcel, Colt, Gabi, and Falco are forced to fight a war just to justify their existence.

“Staying on your property” makes me thinking You’re thinking of American slaves, im talking about slaves throughout time. For example, European slaves(when Europe engaged in this practice) the slaves weren’t African.

You're right about eren being the only one doing something, but last I checked government, military and media isn't the same as the whole world. The whole world wasn't there for the declaration of war. The way I see it and correct me if I'm wrong.
Example.
eren is being attack and he defends himself but to make sure the attackers family or friends don't attack him and his family and friends, he goes and kills the attackers family and friend's who had nothing to do with the attack

Japee87@ I see bro. It wasn't rhetorical at all. And won't comment further because the last thing I want is to comment spoilers for Ange, Carlie, yourself or anyone else. Just know that this part of the story has only just scratched the surface of Eren's character.

No, clearly you missed the point of Isayama's writing, it is to show how difficult a choice Eren is making regardless. Just because Hange said "Genocide is wrong" doesn't stop the rest of the world from absolutely demolishing the subject of ymir throughout the world. Eren isn't in the right, but he sure as fuck is the only one from Paradise doing something effective with the time he has left in this fictional world.

Yea, man, I hope I don't come across too preachy. I'm not trying to make people feel bad or wrong for liking Eren. I like Eren as a character a lot, too, and maybe that gets lost when I'm giving these diatribes lol. I really appreciate that you and Carlie are thinking for yourselves and not listening to one person's opinions on things. This show throws a lot at you morally, emotionally, etc, especially in season 4. Think you said it best. This season is exhausting, but it's great storytelling. Anyways, keep up the great content you two!

So the part about the other eldians in other places only just clicked to me in the next reaction. These things that you've outlined here are the actions that I do not agree with, which I hope I have stated multiple times. I just really like a lot of the redeeming qualities that Eren does have and I am just trying to understand his actions whilst also not agreeing with a lot of them. A lot of it does come across as "copium" as a lot of people like to state haha. Which I fully get that too. Completely agree with your last sentence as well! Very well said

Not sure what the point of asking this is as we cannot discuss/debate this regardless of my answer. I'm guessing you are probably just asking rhetorically. But, if not, then given the context in which you asked this it is obvious that, to you at least, there things in the manga that would rectify/clarify some or much of what I'm saying. If the manga or future season elaborates on the topics I've discussed I will be more than happy to adjust my position. As it stands now though, I feel like I grasp what Isayama has been trying to convey. And that's all I can do is act on what I've seen. Short answer, no. 😊

"Here is why Eren sees the Rumbling as justified."
Literally the first line 💀💀. You must either be blind or doesn't understand the point of the show like he said to even miss that.
2022-07-27 00:38:18 +0000 UTC
Ange, in your discussion you mentioned that Eren is doing the Rumbling to save Eldians, but remember that many Eldians in the internment zones will be wiped out, so it really has more to do with saving his friends than saving "his race". Also, the Rumbling will cause a billion Carlas in comparison to the attack on Shiganshina that Eren witnessed. He's become the devil that he always hated, that Floch always wanted, which is truly sad. Again, intentions are pure, but his rationality and morality hasn't matured with age. He his imo rage incarnate, which is both his best and worst defining attribute.

I don't think Eren's manipulating Kruger or Grisha the same way the original King influences all future Founding Titan/hosts. It's more that the attack titan host sees future attack titan hosts' memories, and the only reason Eren was able to influence Grisha was because he was getting Eren's memories of going through Grisha's memories. That was only possible because Zeke's royal blood allowed them to use the Founding titan's powers to access all memories etc.
so it wasn't so much that past attack titan hosts were always influenced by Eren, they get a mix of all future attack titan's memories randomly, but Grisha saw Zeke through Eren's memories/eyes, and Grisha heard Eren through Zeke allowing Eren to view Grisha's memories so it's some weird mirror thing.
Grisha wasn't hearing Eren directly, he was seeing the memory of Eren talking to him during that incident, and MAYBE because that happened while Zeke/Eren where in the titan paths dimension, it was a lot more potent and hence why Grisha experienced it real time.

It’s not really 2000 years for her because of how time in the paths works. Eren and zeke relive years of grishas life in an instant and Ymir can create titans instantly in the real world but as you see in the paths, she does this by painstakingly forming them from sand by hand. She more or less been condemned to an eternity of servitude

"Wipe out military infrastructure and create an agency to observe the outside world so they don't rebuild and blindside Paradis." The best solution, if it was possible o do in AOT universe. As Armin put it, The colossal Titan isn't precise like the Attack. It simply just blows up/burns everything surrounding it. As right as you may be in the real world, Isiyama has made sure to leave no other way for Eren.

Saying "the other solution is hard" isn't a justification for wiping out the planet.
Wipe out military infrastructure and create an agency to observe the outside world so they don't rebuild and blindside Paradis. Keep the rumbling on standby until Paradis' military is built up. But no, this requires a single person to be an intelligent titan and a small handful of others to be on standby to possibly turn into a royal pure titan. That's too much to sacrifice, so now I'm justified in wiping out the planet.
Of course I GET Eren's reasons and I love him as a character and I want him to be happy. And I love the story for how complicated the whole conflict is. But the Rumbling definitely isn't justified. At the same time, it's one of the stickiest situations you can ever be in and you certainly can't expect Eren to make a different decision given his nature and everything he's seen & experienced.

Y'all are caught up! I have the same theory as you do, with respect to future Shreeded Titan. Eren has to be the last. Right? Maybe he shows the other's how to end One of The Nine. Or he Ends all of the Titan's? Maybe he shows Ymir how to be Free? He seems to be the manifestation of Ymirs freedom.

Back in ep 9 of season 4 I believe they talked about how they wanted to show the world that they weren't devils and eren agreed with them but he said it would take time for it to happen. So with what we know about the attack titans power he should have been able to maybe fix the misconception that Eldians are bad people earlier.

Anders Pike
2022-07-25 10:31:50 +0000 UTC
Here is why Eren sees the Rumbling as justified.
Primary Aggressor
1. Marley is the primary aggressor.
2. The people in the walls have nothing to do with the crimes of their ancestors. They are innocent.
3. Marley will stop at nothing to get to Paradis resources, capture the Founding Titan, and massacre every man woman and child within the walls.
4. The WORLD declared war, & Eren responded.
Time Limit.
1. The series has stressed a few times that human technology will soon be so advanced that Titans will be useless. Anti-Titan Cannons, Aircraft etc. Soon even the rumbling wouldn’t be able to deter Marley or an Alliance from bombing them into oblivion from the skies.
2. Historically speaking, the show is based around the 1940s. Only a matter of time before the nuclear bomb was made. Not to mention, fighter jets and so on.
Peaceful Options?
1. Talking here like Armin always recommends will not guarantee Paradis Islands survival. That, and not everyone wants to listen. Just like Marley.
2. Having the founder get passed on won’t work either, human technology is catching up quick.
3. I am curious, those that keep bashing Eren, what is your solution for him then?
Conclusion
1. Eren only has 4 years left to live.
2. For him, it is either now or never. He will do whatever he can to “save Mikasa & Armin”, along with everyone else he cares about.
3. Those who disagree with him, wouldn’t hesitate to support him had they been a Eldian living in the walls with their families, their mothers, wives, brothers, sons etc.
4. Eren became the villain, so that his loved ones can live.

2022-07-25 07:23:13 +0000 UTC
This episode is truly about showing the inevitability of what happens in the plot, all due to the truly incredibly executed circular story telling. The instant that Ymir obtained the Founding Titan, it was all set into motion. Her death set about the birth of the Paths, which in combination with the birth of the nine Titans via her daughters, allowed for the Attack Titan to go about fulfilling Ymir's true wish of freedom, no matter the cost.
And to think all this war and strife all happened because a young girl wanted to be free of chains forced onto her. The world seemingly tried everything to prevent her from having her freedom, but she persisted, for 2000 years, to obtain just that. Tragic yet very poetic.
As a manga reader, I can't wait for you two to see how this all goes down in the end. It's a rollercoaster of an experience

She hasnt said one word because the king cut out every slave’s tongue. Idk if you saw game of thrones but mutilating slaves was a common practice. To the slavers, the slaves dont need certain body parts to be a properly functioning slave. a tounge would be considered one of thos parts.
It really makes me wonder how realistic this practices are.

The king you saw in this flashback isn't the one who does the brainwashing. This flashback is from 2000 years ago, the brainwashing happens only 100 years ago. Carlie made a good point imagine waiting 2000 years for someone to free you. Not only that but she built those walls and the colossal titans in them as well, even after death she was still being a slave to the royals.

The original king who enslaved ymir died on a normal human timeline. 1900 years later the latest king, a very distant relative of the original king, enforced the brainwashing. Ymir spent 13 years a titan, all during the normal life of the original King Fritz, and almost 2000 years as a child in the coordinate.

HAHAHAHA I hadn't thought of that at all !jThere actually is a skeletal titan 🤣🤣
Ange you predicted everything ! F
Ymir didn't scrifice herself out of love or anything like taht in my opinion. I saw it as some kind stockholm syndrome.
She had been brought up to as a slave and brought to bieleve that her life was the (asshole) king's prorety.
She was just waiting for anyone to say the words words Eren said to her and was only following the royal bloodline's orders out of "duty" as Carlie said.
I always thought Eren's words to Ymir were genuine but you made me doubt there. I still think they are, but will wait to see if it's true ort not.

One cool thing that I had seen mentioned somewhere, is the white flower that is seen on a couple different occasions in Ymir's flashbacks has 9 petals. Those petals are representative/symbolic of the 9 titans. Even more interesting though, is one petal is stained with blood, representing Eren, the Attack (SHREDDED) Titan.

I would like to pose a question to Carlie and Ange. Considering Eren can see the future and what he's almost "destined" to do with the Rumbling, is he really Free? Can someone who knows the path forward for their life truly be free? That's all he's ever wanted. Remember how he reacted when Armin said he was the one who is actually a slave. And if Eren isnt free, whose fault is it?

The Shreskleted Titan arrived 🙌 👌
The Marleyans have long been determined to acquire the Original Titan from the Eldians for their own military exploits. In the process, they also wish to exterminate the people living behind the walls whose ancestors brought death and destruction to the rest of the world thousands of years ago.
Eren, who has long anticipated such a move, leads a surprise attack on Liberio with the help of the Survey Corps. This gives the Eldians time to regroup while the allied forces prepare to wage a war of extermination on the Isle of Paradis.

I don't really see it as Eren manipulating Grisha or Ymir! Grisha had his plan from the start and he knew he wouldn't take the founding titan without casualties. He couldn't do it at first but Eren reminded him of why he was there in the first place. It reminds me of the conversation between Kruger and Grisha, Kruger also told Grisha to stand up and take revenge. Yes it was a cruel scene but it has to be done sadly.
Regarding Ymir, Eren loves freedom and hates people's freedom being taken away so I see his "you're not a slave" talk to Ymir as genuine.
One last thing, please beware of spoilers after you finish watching all the episodes because most people have read the manga and they know how it's going to end.

The legendary triple upload! I just gotta brag on em man. I've probably watched a dozen reactors for aot on yt/patreon and Carlie and Ange are the only ones that do it like this. Multiple uploads a week and double/triple uploads for the most hype moments. That's dedication and appreciation to their fans, money is secondary. One important thing to note here is that Eren could not change the past and the future even if he wanted to. Meaning that all of this was doomed to happened, it was destiny if I might say.
If Eren could've chosen a different route, he would probably do it. But looking at it all, he knew he couldn't so he did his best to "save his people" and paradis. Of course many might hate him for it, but all he is doing is living up to his own character. Rumbling is fucked up but it was destined to happened. It was already hinted from season one in many subtle ways.
Kinda sad for Erens character because I know you guys love/loved him. But that's the tragedy of this story. Somethings wont change and the most important lesson is that there is no truth as we saw it. We were rooting for the main characters back in season 1 to 3 and the further we got the more we realised that it's all about perspectives.
Edit: The reason why Eren got so massive (I think above 300 meters) is because he's head had to reattach to his body and because Founding Titan Ymir was huge back then too. I think roughly around 150-200 meters.
You guys are safe to watch the Intro now and the outro.

1820 years after Ymir gets the powers of the titan, Marley defeats Eldia in the Great Titan War and King Fritz flees to paradise island, wiping the memories of those Eldians who followed him.
100 years later the wall is broken by Bertholdt and Reiner.
5 years after that, Bertholdt breaks the wall in Trost.
1 year after that the Scouts make it to the Sea for the first time.
3 years after that, is where Season 4 begins.

What if, Eren is actually a very much influenced by the will of the Shredded Titan which is the angry “free” manifestation of Ymir, because we must remember that the 9 titans are part of her will and her person. 🤯

Eren was absolutely genuine with Ymir. Eren's all about freedom, so he felt sad for her. About the to you in 2000 years thing, Eren mentioned it but basically the reason the attack titan never bows down to the king or anyone else was to eventually lead to this moment and to also give that desire for freedom to Ymir.
