Attack on Titan S4 P1 Wrap Up Q&A!

This is the greatest turn ever brought to a character after Breaking Bad. It's not breaking new ground but does this show subvert expectations better than Game of Thrones. So are you viewing Eren as protagonist anymore or just an antagonist? Or is it still a grey area with you two? I guess I was late to the party with this question.

Believing Erwin was the better choice shows you have completely failed to grasp Isayamas writing of Erwins character. “Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on. Everyone was a slave to something.” Erwin was a slave to his dream; it was even more important to him than Humanity’s victory; it was more important to him than Humanity itself, but what would he do once he reached his dream? What does anyone do after they achieve the one thing in life that has been driving them and moving them forward? Maybe Erwin would still be the brilliant mastermind he always was – maybe not. I think he would have lost a significant amount of motivation going forward, that was the point of Kenny’s line, what would Erwin be drunk on, what would he be a slave to now? Levi chose Armin because of that very fact.

That is probably the worst interpretation of Hange's character I've ever seen. No, she is not Erwin, it's not fair to hold her in comparison to him at all, Erwin is on a level of his own, a man, with a dream, willing to almost sacrifice humanity itself for that dream, but to say that Hange has been a total nightmare is in complete ignorance of her character. What would you, or Erwin, or anyone else have done in her place? She went out into the outside world to look for an answer because she too believed that Zeke's plan for Eldia was not the right choice - they came home empty handed, and then Eren and Zeke ripped the floor out from underneath them all, with Zeke and Yelena having been plotting something else entirely from day one. She's not been a nightmare, she's been put in a position worse than Erwin ever was, and quite frankly, holds her resolve till the end.

Idk Zeke succeeded at meeting the azumabito, at creating the anti Marleyan volunteers, at meeting Eren and planning things with Paradise so it was possible to work in secret. The owl hide for a long time and the attack titan was hidden for even longer. The group of Grisha existed so I feel like it was possible for the shifters to rebel at one point. But I understand it's a difficult place and not what the story was meant to be. It just makes me .... frustrated to see them fighting under their slavers orders :(

If you recall, In the opening sequence of the first episode of the season, Falco is on the battle field looking up at the birds. When he is dragged into the trench he is still out of it and doesn’t recognize his comrades. He then says “Wasn’t I flying around with a sword just now? Like whoosh! Nah that's a lie, there's often a bunch of spoilers in anime openings. It has always been that way and sometimes it's shit. I was actually disappointed by that opening when I knew honestly, and I still had doubts because I didn't know if it really was going to happen or not. But Carlie and Ange WILL know it's true because of all our comments debating wether they should watch it.

A question I've been meaning to ask is how you guys feel about characters being shuffled from the background to the foreground and back again? An example would be the characters of Historia and Ymir who I barely registered in season 1 until they became quite significant in season 2. Only for Ymir to disappear and pretty much die off screen whilst Historia was significant in part 1 of season 3 and has now mostly been relegated to the background as a figurehead monarch. Personally I like the fact that various character's levels of signicance to the story get shuffled around. I've seen people complain that Historia has basically disappeared from the story but personally I feel she has played her part. I feel like it adds a degree of "organicness" to the storytelling that characters step on and off the stage. I also like the trick of characters who seem like they're background characters or extras having moments of being significant. Characters you didn't even notice or had forgotten about come back such as Louise who doesn't neccessarily contribute significantly to the plot but plays a thematic role through her feelings for Mikasa in echoing/paralleling Mikasa's feelings for Eren. Giving "insignificant" characters a moment to take centre stage then leave again somehow makes the world seem more "real" like it doesn't just revolve around a handful of characters that we've been following the whole time. There are other people with their own things going on who are significant in their own way.

The fact people say it’s anticipated is the dumbest rationalisation. Regardless of whether it’s expected or not watching the opening clearly spoils something that is going to happen.
