Simply put, Emilia is to Subaru what Subaru is to Rem. Emilia was the first person to help him in this world and saved his life. He saw how kind she was to go out of her way to save and help a complete stranger and fell in love with her during the time they spent together. He was at a low point in his life when he came to this world and Emilia was a beacon of light to him (even if that timeline is now gone, which is why Emilia just doesn't understand why Subaru is so keen on paying her back). Subaru saved Rem at her lowest moment and brought her out of her self-hatred (self-hatred Subaru also has) and she fell in love with him for doing that for her. Rem doesn't really know much about Subaru just like Subaru doesn't know that much about Emilia. She risks her life to save him no matter what, just like Subaru does for Emilia (and Rem too, tbf) And just like Emilia doesn't owe Subaru her love just because he loves her, Subaru doesn't owe Rem his romantic love just because she loves him.. It really frustrates me that people watch this scene and just seem not to get that. The best thing Subaru could do to Rem is be honest with her and let her make her own decision on whether or not she still wants to help him, which he did. Rem deserves better than to be a second choice, and Subaru knows that. He does absolutely love Rem and would risk his life to save her in a heartbeat but how fair would it be to her if he just chose her because she was available and not because he truly felt romantic feelings for her?

I think one of the reasons is that her actions aren't always clearly conveyed, but after reading the novel and noticing the details in what she is doing, I completely understand his love for her. There were so many reasons to mistrust Subaru in some timelines. And every single person has at some point mistrusted him. Except for two: Reinhard (because he never had a reason to) and Emilia (even though she had all the reason to). BTW: Saying Emilia doesn't trust Subaru or has empathy for his situation is not true. It probably should be true and every other person would probably be this way after everything that he said and did to her, but not Emilia. And that's why he loves her.

2025-10-10 20:20:00 +0000 UTCI highly doubt you will ever read it but in Sloth if (An alternate reality in which he runs away with rem) he does actually put her first and treat her well, he truly has love for rem but he just loved Emelia first/more. Edit: Also always get chills with the alarm/white whale entrance I don't know why but the juxtaposition of the visuals and alarm is super eerie then goes into the distorted alarm as it goes to the whale, soo good.

The phone is actually a great indicator, bc it sfill has charge, and people instantly question it, but lile, it's only been about a week? Maybe a few days over. In a similar veib, people really forget that Rem freaking killed Subaru twice jist a few days ago. Yeah he is close with her now, but that doesn't go away. It's like when you get bitten by a stray dog. There will be a little intrusive thought at the back of your mind from then on. Whenever you play with a dog you will have hat tiny feeling that you might just get bitten, even if it's a dog you trust.

There is an entire side story, a Sloth What If of rem actually said yes, left everyone to die, and went west, so yes…it was an actual possibility of rem saying yes :V Also…anime cut it out, but Subaru said in the novels and manga he did indeed feel SOMETHING for her, and if Emilia allowed it, second wife (though I'm sure that is just even more upsetting to hear lol)
