I arrived in Vancouver early yesterday, and after scurrying my way through the airport and customs, I began what turned out to be a very long trek to Gabriola Island. First, I hopped on the skytrain (which cost $8 for a short ride I found out), then a bus ride populated by hyper children, and finally got on a ferry across the Bay to Nanaimo Island. From there, another ferry over to Gabriola Island. And then a short taxi ride. And all of that only took about 5 hours - or, as long as a flight from Baltimore to Vancouver!
But, even though it took a really long time to get here, this is probably one of my favorite places I've been to as a traveling model. Though, none of my gigs are on the island and are actually in Vancouver. In Canada, this has the second highest concentration of artists. There are small galleries scattered around the island, and a lot of amazing, artistic people. Today, I got out and walked around quite a bit, and did self portraits outside for the first time. Taking your clothing off in public and taking self portraits is very nerve-wracking without a lookout...I was aware that it's a bit risky, but I got really, really nervous. I'm thinking of going out again on the 28th as well to do a few. All of the photos will be uploaded soon as well - as soon as I have a reliable wifi connection. It turns out, while being on a small island with very basic amenities is very scenic, they generally do not have high-speed internet. Imagine that, the audacity.
I'll be uploading a few sneak peeks though at the $1 level, and then will hopefully have a couple of sets up very soon - within a couple of days. The above photo was taken this afternoon on a little beach close by.
