Emotional intelligence doesn't help you see through disguises, thats just regular intelligence, and Luffy is not the type of person to put up a front for anyone. Hes shown genuine surprise whenever someones disguise is revealed, and even when he was severely beaten by Lucci and definitely too tired to keep up the facade, he was still surprised 'Usopp showed up'. His stupidity is part of his charm, his whole schtick is freedom, including being free from thinking a lot lol

He's one of, if not the most emotionally intelligent people in the series, and he's exceptionally good at reading people. He just has a sense of humor, and he's very casual by default, so he just plays along to let the people who are hiding their identities - read, Usopp pretending to be Sogeking, Foxy pretending to be Foxie, Caesar pretending to be whatshisface, and so on - have their moments of security. But right now, he's just too tired to give a shit, so he didn't bother with the facade for Pekoms. To note, Luffy isn't stupid, he's just uneducated and extremely casual, and he tends to wear his heart on his sleeve, at least for his surface emotions. He's not driven by a desire for knowledge, and he trusts his crew to know what's happening, and if it's important enough, he trusts them to fill him in and to know what to do about it. He's actually quite crafty and intelligent when he applies himself. For example, he literally just taught himself to see into the future by sheer force of will, while being beaten to death.

UNTIL Katakuri acknowledged him (especially "seeing into the future" in beating Big Mom) and THEN fell onto his back. Up until that point I saw it as Katakuri was last man standing (and I don't care if it was just Luffy recovering after fourth gear expired - he couldn't continue the fight in that moment), so to me in that moment was Katakuri won the fight but Luffy won the war because he couldn't stop his escape... but that last part changed everything in my mind.

Its one of the most meaningful fights so far. Not only does Luffy develop as a fighter, as a person. But so does Katakuri. Isntead of being the same as when he started the fight, like many other villains or antagonists can be like.

Both Hordy and Ceasar are characters that didnt push Luffy nearly enough for it to be considered

Luffy was able to point out Katakuri's "voice" from inside his mochi temple. While Luffy can't use Armament and Conqueror's Haki after using gear 4 it seems the same isn't true for Observation.

2025-02-13 14:31:09 +0000 UTCI also think people underestimate the time limit, cooldown and fight space needed for gear 4, in Luffys mind during the initial fight against Hody he probably didnt think it was worth it to risk the cooldown if the enemy survives, and then the next part of the fight he was stuck in a bubble, like just imagining Luffy trying to go G4 in a bubble at the bottom of the ocean sounds dumb enough that I can believe even Luffy thought it was a bad idea

Hordy was strong, but Luffy just began beating the boat and Hordy went down along with it like fodder. Caesar was weak, his only real threatening part removing air and the cloud of poison chasing them. 'Mingo was the first real opponent he had to go all out against.
