I went to stay with my grandparents every summer 2 states away from 7-15. Its not that odd. Airlines even have chaperones for minors flying alone. Sometimes families want to be close without actually being close.

This is true. The whole setup for this show was based on creator Alex Hirsch's own real life experiences, where, as a child, he and his actual twin sister, Ariel, would spend their summers with their great-aunt (or "graunty" as they called her) at her cabin in Gold Hill, Oregon, home of the Oregon Vortex a roadside mystery attraction.

It’s not that weird for the kids to be here. It isn’t entirely uncommon for things like this. Stuff doesn’t have to be wrong at home for you to spend the summer with someone, I went to Texas to stay with my aunt Krystal just because it was the only time I ever got to see them, since working out visit times was hard outside of holidays, and my family was just big chilling. It’s just a thing that happens sometimes.

Did Alicia really not notice that when Stan shook Gideon that the number 2 journal fell out and then the deed and Stan reached down for both?

ngl i had that feeling for a while when the show first aired. Happy to to know i was right on the money. (Sometimes family problems can be too much on the kids so its best if they went to see a realitive until things are sorted out.)

There was a recent book released that had some hints about what was going on with Dipper and Mabel’s parents. Wouldn’t read the book until you’ve finished the show, but (not spoilers for anything in the show) it implies that things back home… aren’t great

yeah don't you remember? he gave waddl.. I mean Soos a pay raise. : ) Stan seems the kind of guy that understands the value of a dollar. He knows Soos does a good job so is worth the money.

Dipper and Mabel are only there for the summer. Their parents just wanted them to have some fresh air during the summer.

You know.... as much of a cheapskate as Stan is, this does imply he actually pays Soos pretty damn well given Soos had to take up multiple other jobs to replace that lost income.

yea i kind of get what you mean, but also, they sent their kids to spend the summer with Stanford Pines. if you watched the series then you'll understand what I'm getting at. anything else is spoiler territory

I mildly question the parents sending the twins to Stan just because context clues would imply they're not close or familiar with him. I always figured Stan would be distant for reasons explained later. Sending kids to hangout with a close relative for a summer, especially if the parents don't want them unsupervised while they work is normal to me. Sending them to a shady, distant relative with minimal way to contact home? That had me side eyeing a bit.

I'm not sure if you've been seeing the cracked ciphers at the end of every episode but I highly recommend as it would be cool to see you theorize using them as they are more important in Season 2. Plus it would be a good way for you to experience what made the show so special when it was initially airing.

@Miguel Soares so you’re both kinda right. Believe the initial plan was 3 seasons, but Hirsch burned himself out going through season 1 so much that he didn’t want to continue even despite ending things on a cliffhanger. He was convinced to do another season, but was adamant on finishing the show by the end of season 2.

Even before the book of Bill stuff I find it odd that people are questioning as to why they were sent away to live with Stan at all. Like my mom would send me to other relatives to visit during the summer some times and there wasn't really any explicit any reason other then to "hey you must be bored just staying in the house during the summer is there any places you want to go/visit" and she couldn't really afford to send both of us. That was all I took from that, And as for why Stan specifically its clear from the phone call this episode that they trusted him enough to have the kids over so they aren't really bad parents for trusting someone in the family they know.

Absolutely Love this series. I would highly recommend watching the shorts before season 2 but they arn't 100% Necessary. At the very least I'd watch the first set titled Dippers Guide to the Unexplained. Can't wait to see more from this series!

The founder of Gravity Falls, the 8th and a half president, instituted what is basically a "possession is 100% of property" law. Since Gideon possesses the deed, he owns it.

Also in reference to the parents sending dipper and mabel to stan. Did you not go spend summers with relatives? I used to go see my aunt for entire summers growing up just to get away and have my own little vacation when i was younger than dipper and mabel. Its nothing going on just that they want them to spend time together and also probably get a break themselves. ETA: they live in california so it was an out of state visit as well. They get to have a fun adventure and stan gets to connect with his family that they probably dont see too much.

Whats crazy is that the deed has stans name on it so theres no world in which a cop shouldnt be removing gideon. It absolutely looks like he just stole it. If stan gave it to him they wouldve had to sign it over and the name would be changed

If you love Gravity Falls' continuity, you're gonna' love and hate Steven Universe.
They once had a staff member dedicated to tracking continuity. Then they let them off. Then the rest of the show happened.

Book of Bill spoilers
I will say they weren’t explicit about it being marital problems directly. They could have been arguing about a financial situation or something similar. Either way, it’s issues they’d rather not have Dipper and Mabel deal with while they work it out over the summer. I just hope they worked it out.
Robert
2024-08-04 15:41:30 +0000 UTC
They don't really explain this in the show but rather in a book called "the book of bill", if you plan to read it don't read this comment further (and if this comment is considered spoiler I would not mind it being deleted)!
They actually explain the whole parent thing of why they sent them away in "the book of bill", Mabel and Dipper's parents were arguing at home (marital issues and all that) and they didn't want them to constantly hear it so they sent them to Stan for the summer.
Pretty depressing fact, they reveal a lot of lore in comics and books.

Plea once more to watch the Gravity Falls shorts before starting season 2. They’re on Disney Plus, listed as Gravity Falls Shorts. They’re 17 2-minute shorts that aired sporadically after season 1 but before season 2 officially aired a year later.
