For example, the normal chance of birth defects is around 2%. If you have one generation of inbreeding (brother/sister, for example), it doubles to 4%. So if it's just a single generation, it's basically not an issue. Which honestly makes you wonder why sibling incest is illegal. Parent/child incest, yeah, that makes sense, since there's the issue of authority/manipulation. But brother/sister isn't going to have that issue. And it would be so uncommon that the multi-generational thing wouldn't be a problem. And that assumes that they end up having kids at all.

You can see at the beginning (5:20) that the commoners are worried, but the military told them to evacuate and leave the "rescue operations" to them. Later they told everyone it was bluejam the culprit.
