Dogs in Love 3 - Editing Breakdown

A two hour breakdown of some of the editing choices that went into the making of Dogs in Love.

I was just watching this yesterday when I noticed where Alteria gets zapped by lightning, you can see her skeleton for just one frame. I was shocked by how much effort must have gone into that little gag.

Stars In A Jam Jar

I love watching editing breakdown videos/editing streams. thanks for the peek behind the curtain

I cannot stress enough how literally a single stray pixel can catch your eye EVERY single time it flips on and off if it's in the wrong spot. This was a huge obstacle while making Epithet Erased. Molly's portraits were extremely cursed in this regard and a lot of them still have floating pixels. Something like a highlight or a patch of fur shading in different spots between Portrait A and Portrait B means that you can't simply swap between them. The audience will 100% notice. If there's a discrepancy between them, you have to hide that during the transition with some kind of animation and swap between the portraits in the middle of a hop or a tilt or something so the viewer's eye is focused on the movement, not the changing colors, and THAT means you have to animate even more to hide a simple art mistake. It's a really basic error that multiplies my work later on in production. The reason I was so baffled re: these was that so many of the portraits had changes that shouldn't have been there at all. Like entire shading layers between expressions moving 1-5px over for no reason. I genuinely can't imagine why that kept happening. You should be duplicating ALL the body layers wholesale for each portrait, it makes zero sense to move any of them, especially an internal layer like coloring or a shading clipping mask.

Yeah I guess I just don't get it because, like... Just post both the aro and ace flag? They're literally meant to go together if you need them to.

JelloApocalypse

Holy moly. I guess if you're paying multiple thousands of dollars for it, the level of perfectionism on those Ningeko portraits is understandable, but damn. You sure you couldn't get away with, like, 15-20% lower standards on... foot size, or uncolored lip fur? Seems like an extreme degree of effort to repaint all that to be perfect, considering the nature of the video. I can see how the animation and sound effect timing can matter to the joke, but slightly janky art... I mean, three minutes later you're sticking googly eyes on a Donphan and wooglin' him around. I dunno if anyone's going to be bothered by two pixels' misaligned nose coloration besides... like, you, staring at it up close for multiple hours in Vegas Pro. Do people really notice that kind of thing?

oh the sunset blue -> yellow flag is meant to be the "aroace" flag. which. i would consider unnecessary. and also probably an inaccurate description of oz and lenti. but if people want to use that flag for themselves, sure, fine.

Hi Yam

It was fascinating to know that the ding is meant to mean the joke is stupid and the ooh means it's cool. I didn't realise at all.. is there like a filmmaking class people can take to learn what they're meant to mean? I just laugh at all the jokes equally, I feel dumb now...

Bunni89

It's really cool learning now how much work you out it into it and I feel terrible I wasn't appreciating it. I don't want you to have wasted so much work! I think maybe for most people like me we wouldn't notice at all if you used the same sound effect too many times, so it's okay not to worry about being perfect with it. I'll try and be more perceptive in future to appreciate your good work!

Bunni89

I hope it's not bad to say but I feel guilty I literally never noticed any of this sound effect stuff? I didn't know you edited the sound effects at all for any of these videos. They just all kinda went over my head as background noise and I feel awful cos you're here saying it's meant to enhance the mood of a joke and it didn't. I hope I'm just an outlier and other people noticed it, right?
