Next Manga Book Club - PLUTO

Hey readers. The next manga book club date has been set. We'll be talking about Pluto, a robot murder mystery thriller set in the world of Astro Boy. This recently got a Netflix adaptation, but as per usual, we're just here for the manga!

This time around we will be joined by Aloha and Amy will be subbing in for Bo! Pluto only has six volumes, even shorter than Dunmeshi, so we will be hosting our livestream club meeting for fellow readers in three weeks on March 24 at 5pm EST/2pm PST.

I might throw up some discussion questions before the stream if I finish reading early enough. Excited to read a more suspenseful thing. Hope to see you there!

I read this about a month ago and was enthralled. And the anime was awesome, it did have to cut some stuff but it's fine

If you want to participate then you read all the manga assigned before the meeting date. Then, $5/mo members or higher get access to a livestream where they can join us. You can read them legally by buying the volumes or renting them at a library... or you can find them... elsewhere.

i only read this for the first time about a few months ago but im hyped to read it again i do gently propose to people going into this manga that you read the original Greatest Robot on Earth arc from Astro Boy before (or after) going into Pluto. it doesnt really matter what you do first, but i wouldnt worry about it spoiling anything because despite it following the general skeleton of the original’s plot, Pluto is still kind of written with the conceit that you might have read the original before, and it leads to a lot of cool intertextuality between the two. like, it has a lot of twists and turns that are presented as twists doubly so for people who think they know where its going based on the original, and i think that sort of thing is neat. in fact theres a lot of scenes and sequences that have a lot more pathos when you already know what’s gonna happen imo, but that’s mostly early on. again, completely optional, its not exactly the most culturally sensitive piece of literature out there (but the way Urasawa uses it as a base for the political conflict in Pluto is really good), totally up to whoever decides to take my advice, but personally i think it enhanced my experience with Pluto. its only about 178 pages long, about an hour to read at most, and i dont think im legally barred from saying that its probably very easy to find it online for free by just looking it up.
