2023-03-19 18:52:11 +0000 UTCIn Zuko's defense, leaving Mai with just a letter was absolutely the correct thing to do. If he'd told her face-to-face that he was going to betray his father, it would've put her in an impossible situation: 1. If she was in agreement with him and wanted to join, she'd have to leave her entire life behind and commit treason alongside him, probably destroying her family's lives in the process. 2. If she wasn't in agreement with him she'd either have to let a traitor escape, which would possibly land her in prison (lying to Azula about it probably wouldn't work) and ruin her family's lives--or she'd have to report Zuko or even try to stop him. She's completely justified in feeling pissed and betrayed by Zuko, but his course of action was probably the most mature way of handling things.
