DOWNLOAD THE GAME PACK HERE:

I've compiled LITERALLY THOUSANDS of songs over the last year for a fun little Name That Tune trivia game to play on streams. Now YOU TOO CAN PLAY THE GAME! Download the game pack off of Megaupload and play it as follows:

HOW TO SET UP THE GAME:

1. Get into a Discord server and join a voice call with your friends

2. The Host (whoever has the song files) shares their audio player through Discord. Make sure all the participants can hear the audio coming through before you begin!

3. Once all players can see the screen-shared audio window, they should pop it out and minimize it. This way they will be able to hear the songs, but not see the names of the files.

BASIC RULES:

The file for each song is ~20 seconds long. Players have those 20 seconds to race each other to see who can guess the song first. Players should type their answers in a text channel so that it is clear who actually guessed the song first rather than having everyone shout over each other.

Whoever guesses the source of the song first gets a point.

Saying the song name or the song's source both count as a correct answer. So, for example, if the category is Anime and the song is "Cruel Angel's Thesis," the opening theme to Neon Genesis Evangelion, typing either "Cruel Angel's Thesis" OR "Neon Genesis Evangelion" would be correct. Note that the game is designed around guessing the source of the song since that is easier.

When submitting your answer, SPELLING DOES NOT COUNT. The rule of thumb is "If the host could reasonably guess what show/game/movie the player was attempting to type without hearing the song, the player gets the point." This means that typos, abbreviations, AND vague descriptions all count as correct answers so long as the host can work out the player's intent and that player submitted before anyone else. For instance, if the song is "Cruel Angel's Thesis" I would accept all of the following answers as "correct":

Each Host may adjust the rules as they see fit, but I find that encouraging rapid-fire typos and silly submissions makes the game a lot more fun. The shock of recognition and the panic of trying to get your answer in the fastest is where most of the energy in this game comes from.

HOW THE GAME PLAYS

1) The winner of the previous round selects a category and difficulty level.
2) The Host picks a song from that category/difficulty level at random
3) The Host counts down from 3 and plays the song
4) Players submit their answers
5) Whoever gets the answer first gets a point. The winner gets to pick the next category and difficulty level.
6) If no one guessed the song before time ran out, a point is awarded to the player in last place. If multiple players are tied for last, they all get points. The Host gets to decide the next category and difficulty level.

That's it!

THE SONGS

The songs are separated into six categories: Anime, Cartoons, Video Games, Musicals, Live Action TV, and Films. Players may swap between categories while guessing songs, or they may pick a single specific category to focus on. Up to you!

Each song is labeled with a difficulty level, one (1) through five (5). One is the easiest, five is the hardest. The difficulty levels are determined based on a number of factors. How many people know about this thing? If the media is popular, how memorable is the selected theme? How old is the song? Is there a massive hint to the answer within the song, i.e. the lyrics saying the show's name? Was this song a meme at any point? Etc.

I did my best to rate the difficulty in regards to the average person's knowledge, but obviously my bias is going to play into it a little bit. You may be surprised to find that a game all your friends know and love is placed in category 4 or 5 because I'd never heard anyone in my social circles talk about it before. I'll use the Video Games category as an example:

The difficulty levels are as follows:

There are also BOSS THEMES for each category. These are optional challenges. This game was originally played against a Twitch Chat of 500-800 players. Keep in mind that this game is designed to skew easy. I think it's more fun to have players scrambling to identify a song they all know then to play tricky songs that leave players scratching their heads. The Boss songs, however, are designed to stump not only the players but all of the hundreds of people in Twitch Chat. Some of them failed their mission, but most succeeded and they are exceptionally obscure and mean. Use them if you want!

No single piece of media has more than one song from it, but multiple entries in the same franchise do appear in the list. So, for example, there will never be more than one song from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, but there might be songs from Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, and Breath of the Wild on the same list.

The only exception to this is Anime OPs. Because most Anime have multiple openings for a single show, a few of them appear on the list multiple times such as One Piece and Naruto.

VARIATIONS ON POINT SCORING

It's up to you when to end the game. You can do "First to X points", "Most points by the time we run out of songs", or whatever! your call.

I like to employ various Catch-up Mechanics to the game to make it more even. If a player is in the bottom half of the scoreboard and they get a question right, offer them an easy bonus question related to the thing they just got right. If they get it right, they can earn a bonus point. You can also employ other catchup mechanics such as asking the players to sing a part of a musical song they know for bonus points or making it so that the players in last place earn x2 points until they leave last place. Try to keep everyone in the game engaged, even if they're doing badly!

PLAYING ON STREAM

You may choose to play this game with Twitch Chat participating, as we did! Remember that Twitch Chat has MANY more brains at work and lifetimes of experience than your players could possibly have. This means that Chat is always at a huge advantage if you are pitting them against your players. No matter what scoring mode you are using, Twitch Chat should always only earn 1 point per correct answer.

Twitch chat will always have a delay. You will have to keep an eye on submissions from both your players and Twitch chat to see who answers first. It's tough, but a very fun time!

Enjoy the game!

Yo this has been awesome! I've been playing this with a couple friend groups for the last two months or so, and it's been fantastic! I liked it so much I started compiling my own lists, including a folder specifically for Siivagunner-style bait and switches. Thanks for the meme update, can we expect to get the new video game ones too?
