A lot of patrons have suggested posting behind-the-scenes recordings of the VA sessions for Epithet Erased up on here. Unfortunately, I do not have any of those as the sessions themselves are not recorded!
Luckily for you guys, we're grabbing pickups for the Audiobook this week. Pickups are lines that were somehow missed in the original recording sessions or lines that otherwise need retakes due to tech errors. This usually happens because something was mislabeled or improperly saved, but sometimes I just wanted a different read on something because it didn't flow right.
Today we did pickups for Phoenica (Bryn Apprill) and Trixie (Siv Ryan). These sessions are recorded digitally over a browser-based software called "Source Connect". The actor records at their home with a high-speed internet connection, the Engineer is able to access the live audio feed so they can instantly download and place the audio, and the Director is there to manage it. This is how 90% of anime has been recorded for the last two years.
Since I know Siv pretty well, I asked him if he'd be ok with the session being recorded. The engineer you can hear in this session is Patrick Morphy, a very cool dude who I love working with. Sometimes engineers get paired long-term with a director for a project, but Sound Cadence's model just has all of their engineers swapping around whenever they're available, so getting to work with Patrick is a nice treat!
Because this is a only pickup session it's a bit light on the actual direction, but it's something! VA sessions move a lot slower than most people probably imagine because a good 40% of the time is waiting for the engineer to place lines and move files around. And Patrick is one of the fastest engineers I've ever worked with, so this is actually a really speedy session!
Hopefully you find this interesting? I have a session with Dani tomorrow that should end up being longer if you want me to ask her for recording permission. I can also consider doing this in the future for other Epithet projects.
In addition to book pickups I also wanted to record an official version of this comic by Masu, the same person who made the Kickstarter stickers, so that's what we're doing at the end:
