Wrecked Cabin, Adept
Added 2025-08-13 20:25:13 +0000 UTCHello again, folks- this is the Wrecked Cabin (11x16), a small map focusing on a small cabin with some issues, mainly the missing pieces of the floors and walls. Your alternate version has a fair bit of blood splatter as well as some grim lighting and effects, perfect for using this map for spookier encounters, so go nuts!
Nothing crazy with this layout, I just wanted to make sure that the building got enough of the frame to be the focus of the image while giving you a bit more space for maneuvering outside. Tricky with such a small map, but I'm working with my self-imposed limits.
I changed the layout of the building a touch after this point as well, making the structure a simple rectangle and removing the tiny patio. I liked the idea of keeping the layout simple as you might expect from a random cabin in the woods.
Again, the outlines are as you'd expect, I don't think I drew anything here differently than usual. Forests have always been my favorite maps to draw, so I have quite a bit of experience with them. I did want to make sure that the building had plenty of old, broken props near it to help it feel more lived-in, like it had history. The boat and cart were obvious choices, and I also thought that implying an old fence might be fun as well. Little decisions that add up, I think.
My usual pleasantly vibrant forest palette didn't quite feel right here, so I opted for a sort of half step between happy forest and spooky woods. This mainly meant reducing the saturation and adding a mild tint, though I also tried out a slight glow overlapping the outlines, particularly in the top of the map, which I feel gives the map slightly more realistic lighting. The result looks to me like how bright light washes out details from a distance, giving everything a slight uniform tint. I think it's a touch I'll likely return to, it feels pretty good to me and overall I expect this will become a permanent fixture in my sunnier outdoor maps. Then again, I usually overthink these sorts of things and there's a decent chance I'll look critically at this one in a week and this effect will be cut permanently.
