Secluded Cove, Adept

Hi there, Adepts! This map is the Secluded Cove (16x11), a small protected beach where you'll probably fight crabs, snakes, or pirate skeletons. You know, low level baddies. In order to better set the scene for pirate skeleton slaying you're getting a foggy variant of this one.

1. Something that's kinda tricky with these little maps is laying them out in such a way as to provide both tight and open spaces for multiple types of combat. I settled for a fairly simple layout with primarily open lanes, adding a few small elevation changes for the sake of giving your players something to hide around and gain height advantages with.

2. Something I've been playing around with with the smaller maps is reducing the size of my pen. This map has a bit more going on than the previous few since it isn't a cave so it's more cluttered, and since the image is smaller I expect that the image might be viewed a bit more closely than a regular-sized map, so I've reduced my typical outline pen size by a few px in an attempt to compensate. I still think it's a little too cluttered, but I bet I was a little too heavy-handed with the rock walls and it shows.

3. Colors! It has been a long time since I've colored a tropical scene, so I tried to be extra careful not to go too over the top. I know I tend to blast the saturation on maps when I haven't used the palette in a while, so I really wanted to avoid that here. But still, I feel like tropical maps need a good bit of color, so maybe I didn't quite nail it this time. I'll know for sure in a few days how I really feel about it, but for now I'm starting to think I overdid it a touch too much. The water especially is grating against me a little, which I wasn't expecting, so I'm thinking I might have pushed the colors for that at least a few degrees too far.
