Tavernkeeper Oswald Thaviar

The bald-headed tavernkeeper Oswald Thaviar had proven to be a wealth of information in her quest to retrieve the bard’s stolen spellbook. Aurora gathered her thoughts and considered her question carefully. 

”So a thin man wearing black robes and carrying a carved staff was standing near the bard’s equipment during the performance?”, she asked.


”Oh, most assuredly. I remember because he accidentally spilled his wine all over the bard’s backpack. Tall but clumsy fellow.”

Aurora nodded slowly at Oswald’s gentle words. She was closing in on the thief. Now all she had to do was find the black-robed man!

”It is my experience that when grown men wear black robes it is usually a sign of their profession. Or is that a local thing?”, Aurora remarked while smiling. 

”Haha! No, the priests of the local temple wear black robes though. Perhaps he is a recently joined acolyte?”

Aurora’s smile faded as Oswald engaged in unrelated small talk. She had a suspicion about those priests. Something about their holy symbols resembling a pair of drawn daggers. Maybe this would be more difficult than she thought...

Hello, my wonderful patrons! I hope you are all enjoying the holidays and related banquets of plenty :) 

This week's upload is an experiment I've been mulling over in my head for quite some time. When solo playing a character I often regret the fact that just visiting a tavern or other in-game social environment and just engaging in conversation is something that doesn't happen very naturally. I personally love the behavior check in Mythic, but it is understandably action-orientated. 

'Tavernkeeper Oswald Thaviar' is a custom combination conversation/oracle playtest that basically handles having a conversation with Oswald and bases the outcome on whatever subjects and topics your character (and Oswald himself) bring to the conversation. Fun fact, the story part of this pdf was generated through conversation with Oswald.  

You can easily use his conversation matrix and the system for whatever tavern or innkeeper your run in your own games. I'll try to build a few other characters as well as I playtest the system more.
