Lucerna the Candle-Bound

"A strange flickering light dances on top of the blackened candle. The melted shape casts an unsettling shadow over your newly found amulet lying on the table.
The hissing sounds of the burning candlewick coalesce into a soft seductive whisper: ”I’m so glad you lit the candle for us. Its been forever since our last conversation...”
A cold shiver runs down your spine. Talking to Lucerna the Candle-Bound is both distracting and unnerving. Just something about the way she seems to yearn for your company.
Brushing away Lucerna’s enticing words, you ask if she knows more about the magic properties of your amulet. The wax figurine seem to writhe in enjoyment as she meticulously explains its necromantic origin.
Afterward, you recoil from your amulet in uncertain disgust, ”Why should I trust your words, Lucerna? For all I know, you could be leading me into some necromancer’s trap.”
Lucerna takes a little longer before responding in her captivating voice: ”Now, why would I do that, my dear? After all, undead have no use for candles, and it does get so lonely in the dark...”

Hi guys, I based 'Lucerna the Candle-Bound' on the creative input of Reclusive Knight patron Amanda Rader. Her suggestion was ' Strangely flickering light', and doesn't that just fit the season perfectly!

I have been using companions for my solo campaign play characters for some time, usually in a semi-scripted form and designed to drive the story further. I find messing about with the mechanics of these companions a great substitute for party banter, which is of course missing in solo play.

Amanda's suggestion was a fun way to maybe feature a few of these companions as PDF material!

Lucerna has proven to be quite a handful during playtesting, as she was constantly trying to get my character into trouble while offering information and answers. I got into the practice of taking her words with a grain of salt. I also tried to free her eventually, but in the end, I was afraid she might be a demon, so she is still in my character's candle. Enjoy!

Cheerio,

John
