Roadside Encounters
Added 2019-07-22 00:04:41 +0000 UTCThis matrix for generating interesting roadside encounters came into existence as I was looking for a system to generate believable encounter results, that were also somehow linked to my custom story experience.
And into being sprang a fun experiment with pre-categorizing table generation according to story theme!
Whenever you generate a roadside encounter, simply identify the overarching themes in your current story/plot and use these as input. The more focused your themes are, the better you will be able to interpret results.
Eg. Lets say your character is traveling through a forest filled with xenophobic elves. You could decide that the roadside encounter themes here are Self (the xenophobic elves) and Instinct (the forest/nature).
We need 4 rolls on the descriptor tables, so lets decide we need 2 Self rolls and 2 Instinct rolls.
Our result: ‘a paranoid young rebel uncovering a deadly lie’. Maybe one of the elves discovered a secret that undermines their xenophobic culture!
Enjoy your time at the table!
Cheerio
PS. Patrons can always PM requests for solo/GM'less material, and I'll be more than happy to create for your guys.

Hello! I just wanted to say that I really like that kind of material - giving prompts that need interpretation. At the moment, I am playing a system that already comes with random encounters, but once I have something that hasn't, I am sure I will use this one. It really looks like a gem. One thought, though. If you have several themes, the order in which they are picked changes the result. You don't seem to give any advice on ordering them. Maybe go with starting location first, target location last, or superficial first, inherent last? Yours, Deathworks
