Chapter 11 Preview - How I Became The World's Strongest Warrior Book 2!

I woke up feeling refreshed despite the uncomfortable cot in the safe zone. After a quick breakfast of glowing blue moonberries and something the vendor called "tower toast," I was ready to tackle the next section of the Tower.

Most of the other adventurers were still asleep or just starting their morning routines. A few gave me curious looks, probably wondering about the crazy solo guy who'd broken the floor six speed record.

"Heading up already?" asked the administrator as I approached the staircase to floor seven.

"No point waiting," I replied, checking my weapons one last time.

"Most take at least a day of rest," they noted. "The next section is considerably more... intense."

I just nodded and started climbing. Behind me, I heard them making a note in their ledger, probably updating the "ways adventurers die" statistics.

The staircase to floor seven was longer than the previous ones, spiraling upward through darkness broken only by occasional runes glowing on the walls. When I finally emerged, I understood why everyone had been so dramatic about this section.

Floor seven was a massive jungle environment with towering trees that disappeared into a misty canopy overhead. Unlike the previous floors, where monsters had been spaced out with reasonable distances between them, this place was crawling with creatures. Literally. I could see at least thirty giant spiders moving through the undergrowth within eyesight alone.

[Giant Spider]
[Level 10]
[Health: 1,800/1,800]
[Special Ability: Webbing, Venom Bite]

I drew both weapons, feeling the Vampiric Blade's dark energy pulsing eagerly in my right hand and the Mana Infused Short Sword humming with arcane potential in my left.

This was perfect. The monster density was exponentially higher than the lower floors, which meant significantly more efficient experience gain and material collection. Maximum optimization.

"Now this is more like it," I said, my lips curving into a slight smile.

The first spider charged as soon as it spotted me, eight legs propelling its massive body with surprising speed. I sidestepped its initial lunge and struck with the Vampiric Blade.

The spider basically exploded, legs flying in different directions as its body crumpled under the force of my strike. Before I could even process the kill, two more spiders dropped from the canopy above, descending on silken threads directly toward me.

I struck the first one mid-air.

[Giant Spider Health: 0/1,800]

It burst like a water balloon filled with spider guts. The second one landed nearby and immediately shot a stream of webbing at me. I rolled under it and came up with both blades striking in sequence.

[Already Dead Target: Overkill]

The sound of my strikes and the dying spiders seemed to alert every monster in the vicinity. Suddenly, I was facing a small army of creatures converging on my position.

Three more giant spiders skittered through the underbrush. A chimera—- part lion, part goat, part serpent—-bounded over a fallen log, its three heads roaring in unison. Two lamias slithered from behind massive tree trunks, their human upper bodies armed with curved blades while their serpentine lower halves propelled them forward with alarming speed.

[Chimera]

[Special Abilities: Multi-attack, Fire Breath]

[Lamia]
[Level 12]
[Health: 2,200/2,200]
[Special Abilities: Hypnotic Gaze, Venom Strike]

"Perfect," I said, settling into a defensive stance. "More numbers to go up."

The chimera reached me first, its lion head lunging for my throat while the goat head tried to gore me with its horns. The snake tail whipped around, aiming for my legs. I jumped over the tail, ducked under the horns, and drove the Vampiric Blade straight into the lion's mouth.

The lion head let out a gurgling roar as my blade punched through the back of its skull. The other two heads shrieked in pain but kept fighting. I blocked the goat head's next charge with the Mana Infused Short Sword, then spun to deliver another Perfect Strike to the snake tail, severing it completely.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Total Damage: 2,406.6]
[Chimera Health: 0/3,500]

The chimera collapsed just as the two lamias reached me, their upper bodies swaying hypnotically as they tried to catch my gaze.

"That won't work," I informed them, focusing on their serpentine lower bodies instead of their eyes. I lunged forward, striking the nearest lamia across its scaly torso.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Base Damage: 19.7]

[Perfect Strike Multiplier: x9]
[Total Damage: 2,408.4]
[Lamia Health: 0/2,200]

The second lamia hissed in rage as her companion fell. She abandoned the hypnosis attempt and simply threw her curved blade at me. I deflected it with the Mana Infused Short Sword and closed the distance before she could draw another weapon.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Total Damage: 2,408.4]
[Lamia Health: 0/2,200]

I barely had time to catch my breath before more monsters arrived—three giant spiders, another chimera, and a harpy diving from above.

"Excellent," I said. This level of monster density was significantly more efficient than anything I'd encountered before. Maximum kills per minute meant maximum resource acquisition, experience gain, and skill improvement.

The next few minutes were a blur of continuous combat. Every time I killed one creature, three more seemed to take its place. It wasn't that the individual monsters were particularly challenging since I could kill most with a single Perfect Strike, but the sheer volume was unlike anything I'd encountered before.

After about twenty minutes of non-stop fighting, I'd carved a path through the jungle that was littered with monster corpses. A small notification appeared in my peripheral vision:

[Tower Notice: Unusual Combat Performance Detected]
[Monster Respawn Rate Increasing by 50%]

"Even better," I said with genuine satisfaction. Increased respawn rate meant even less travel time between encounters, maximizing my combat efficiency.

I continued my methodical advance through floor seven, developing a rhythm for dealing with the constant onslaught. The dual wielding was becoming more natural with every encounter, my proficiency steadily climbing as I chained perfect strikes together.

[Dual Wielding Proficiency: 48.3]
[Penalties Reduced: -18% accuracy, -22% damage to both weapons]

After about two hours, I reached the staircase to floor eight, leaving behind a jungle that looked like a tornado had torn through it. Monster corpses were everywhere, and I'd collected an impressive haul of materials.

[Status Update]
[Level 20]
[Experience: 14,830.5/230,400 (6.44% to Level 21)]
[Dual Wielding Proficiency: 48.3]

[Accumulated Resources]
[Spider Silk Gland: 127]
[Venom Sac: 93]
[Chimera Horn: 19]
[Chimera Claw: 47]
[Lamia Scale: 68]
[Lamia Fang: 41]
[Shards of Return: 14]

With the Shards of Return, I now had enough to craft multiple Orbs, which was reassuring. The rest of the materials would be valuable for Witch's crafting, or for selling if we needed funds.

Floor eight was structured as a massive labyrinth, with high stone walls covered in creeping vines and the occasional glow-fungus providing minimal illumination. The monster density remained high, but the confined spaces of the maze corridors meant I couldn't be surrounded as easily.

Not that being surrounded was a problem. It just meant more targets within striking distance.

[Minotaur]
[Level 17]
[Health: 4,000/4,000]
[Special Abilities: Charge Attack, Cleaving Strike]

The first minotaur I encountered charged down a narrow corridor, its massive axe raised high. The confined space limited its maneuverability, allowing me to time my attack perfectly. I stepped aside at the last second and struck as it thundered past.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Base Damage: 19.7]
[Proficiency Differential: 3,373 (Attacker: 3,400 vs Target: 27)]

[Total Damage: 986.5]
[Minor Arcane Bolt Triggered]
[Additional Magic Damage: 3.5]
[Minotaur Health: 499.9/4,000]

The minotaur staggered but didn't fall. It spun around, nostrils flaring with rage, and charged again. This time, I met it head-on, ducking under its wild swing and driving both blades into its chest.

[Vampiric Blade Strike]
[Total Damage: 2,510.1]
[Minotaur Health: 0/4,000]

[Mana Infused Short Sword Strike]
[Total Damage: 986.5]

[Additional Magic Damage: 3.5]
[Already Dead Target: Overkill]

The labyrinth was filled with minotaurs, each requiring two hits to take down. There were also harpies circling overhead, occasionally diving down to attack when I entered more open sections of the maze. The combination of enemies from above and in front made for slightly more interesting combat, but nothing I couldn't handle.

By the time I reached floor nine, my dual wielding proficiency had improved even further:

[Dual Wielding Proficiency: 63.5]
[Penalties Reduced: -16% accuracy, -19% damage to both weapons]

Floor nine was a massive underground cavern system with rivers of lava running through it. The heat was intense, even through my gear's environmental protections. Fire elementals and salamanders patrolled the rocky terrain, while dragon whelps, essentially baby dragons the size of large dogs, circled through the air.

[Fire Elemental]
[Level 20]
[Health: 3,000/3,000]
[Special Abilities: Flame Aura, Fire Immunity]

[Salamander]
[Level 18]
[Health: 3,500/3,500]
[Special Abilities: Fire Breath, Heat Regeneration]

[Dragon Whelp]
[Level 12]
[Health: 2,800/2,800]
[Special Abilities: Fire Breath, Flight]

The fire-based enemies provided a new challenge, as they were highly resistant to physical damage. Even my Perfect Strikes weren't one-shotting them.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Base Damage: 19.7]
[Proficiency Differential: 3,370 (Attacker: 3,400 vs Target: 30)]
[Proficiency Damage Bonus: +337.0]
[Dual Wielding Penalty: -19% damage]
[Physical Resistance: 50% damage reduction]
[Total Base + Proficiency: 289.1]
[Perfect Strike Multiplier: x9]
[Total Damage: 1,300.9]
[Fire Elemental Health: 1,699.1/3,000]

I had to adapt my strategy, focusing more on chaining hits with both weapons rather than relying on single powerful strikes. The Mana Infused Short Sword's arcane properties seemed more effective against the elementals, so I prioritized using it against them.

Despite the increased difficulty, I maintained a steady pace through floor nine. The monster density remained high, but I was getting better at managing multiple threats simultaneously. My dual wielding penalties continued to decrease as my proficiency grew.

[Dual Wielding Proficiency: 78.4]
[Penalties Reduced: -14% accuracy, -16% damage to both weapons]

After about three hours of continuous fighting through floors seven through nine, I finally reached the staircase to floor ten. The boss floor. I took a moment to check my status and prepare.

[Status Update]
[Level 20]
[Experience: 42,630.5/230,400 (18.5% to Level 21)]
[Dual Wielding Proficiency: 78.4]

In addition to tons of monster parts and crafting materials, I now had 27 Shards of Return.

I ate several moonberries to restore my health and stamina to the maximum, then checked my equipment one last time. Both weapons were in good condition, my armor had taken minimal damage, and I had all four Orbs of Return ready in case of emergency.

The staircase to floor ten was different from the others. It was wider, with elaborate carvings depicting eyes of various shapes and sizes covering every surface. As I climbed, I felt a strange sensation, like something was watching me, assessing me.

The tenth floor was a single massive circular chamber, easily a hundred yards across, with a domed ceiling covered in what looked like stars. The floor was smooth black stone that reflected the starlight, creating the illusion of walking through space. And in the center...

[Oculus of Madness]
[Tower Boss]
[Level 25]
[Health: 15,000/15,000]
[Special Abilities: Mind Blast, Gaze of Fear, Reality Distortion, Eye Beams]

The Oculus floated about ten feet off the ground. It had a massive spherical body about fifteen feet in diameter, covered in dark purple skin. Its most prominent feature was a single enormous eye that took up almost half of its front surface, glowing with an unnatural green light. Around this main eye, dozens of smaller eyes of various colors blinked independently, each seeming to focus on different things.

Tentacles extended from the bottom of the sphere, writhing in the air like they were swimming through invisible water. The entire creature pulsed slightly, expanding and contracting in a rhythm that reminded me of breathing.

As I approached, the main eye swiveled to focus on me. The smaller eyes followed suit, all suddenly fixing their gaze directly on me.

"INTERESTING," a voice boomed inside my head. "A SOLO ADVENTURER. HOW... UNUSUAL."

I drew both weapons, settling into my stance. "I'm here for the Charm of Ascension."

"MANY SEEK IT. FEW SURVIVE THE ATTEMPT." The voice sounded amused. "LET US SEE WHAT FEARS HIDE WITHIN YOUR MIND."

The main eye glowed brighter, and suddenly the chamber around us seemed to shimmer and distort. The walls melted away, replaced by...

Nothing. Just an empty void.

The Oculus's mental voice sounded confused. "WHAT IS THIS? WHERE ARE YOUR FEARS?"

I shrugged. "I don't really do fear."

"IMPOSSIBLE. ALL BEINGS FEAR SOMETHING."

The eye glowed even brighter, and this time, I felt a pressure against my mind, like something trying to pry open a locked door. Images flashed before me. Dartanion disappearing, my evolved sword shattering, Witch and Mayra turning away in disgust, my numbers decreasing instead of increasing.

I acknowledged them with mild interest, then mentally set them aside. "Are we going to fight, or...?"

The Oculus's many eyes blinked rapidly in what might have been confusion. "YOUR MIND IS... UNUSUAL. NO MATTER. IF I CANNOT BREAK YOUR SPIRIT, I SHALL BREAK YOUR BODY INSTEAD."

Several of the smaller eyes suddenly shot beams of energy toward me. I dodged the first two and deflected a third with the flat of my blade, then charged directly at the massive creature.

That’s when it shot me with another beam. Honestly, I could have dodged, but that would have meant losing ground. So, I made the decision to just… take it.

[Ocular Beam Strike]
[Damage: 50]
[Health: 150/200]

That actually hurt. The beam had caught my shoulder, burning through my armor with ease. This was the first creature in the Tower that had done significant damage to me.

Good. A real challenge meant more substantial improvement.

I closed the distance rapidly, avoiding more eye beams as I went. The tentacles lashed out, trying to grab me, but I sliced through them with the Vampiric Blade, causing the Oculus to emit a psychic scream of pain.

When I reached striking distance, I launched myself upward, driving the Vampiric Blade directly into the main eye.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Base Damage: 19.7]
[Proficiency Differential: 3,365 (Attacker: 3,400 vs Target: 35)]
[Proficiency Damage Bonus: +336.5]
[Dual Wielding Penalty: -16% damage]
[Critical Hit! Vulnerable Area Struck!]
[Total Base + Proficiency: 299.4]
[Perfect Strike Multiplier: x9]
[Critical Hit Multiplier: x2]
[Total Damage: 5,389.2]
[Oculus of Madness Health: 9,610.8/15,000]

The massive eye burst like an overripe fruit, spraying viscous fluid everywhere. The Oculus reeled backward, its psychic voice now a continuous scream of agony. The smaller eyes darted frantically, firing beams in all directions.

With the main eye destroyed, the creature seemed disoriented and unable to properly target me. I didn't give it time to recover. I leapt again, this time driving both weapons into the center of its body where the main eye had been.

[Vampiric Blade Strike]
[Critical Area Strike!]
[Total Damage: 5,389.2]
[Oculus of Madness Health: 4,221.6/15,000]

[Mana Infused Short Sword Strike]
[Critical Area Strike!]
[Total Damage: 2,120.8]
[Minor Arcane Bolt Triggered]
[Additional Magic Damage: 3.5]
[Oculus of Madness Health: 2,097.3/15,000]

The Oculus's body convulsed violently, tentacles flailing in all directions. I was thrown clear, landing in a roll about twenty feet away. The creature was severely wounded but still alive, its remaining eyes now all focused on me with what could only be described as hatred.

"IMPOSSIBLE," the psychic voice rasped. "NO SOLO ADVENTURER HAS EVER..."

I didn't let it finish. I charged again, ducking under a desperate barrage of eye beams, and delivered one final Perfect Strike directly into what I guessed was the creature's core.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Critical Area Strike!]
[Total Damage: 5,389.2]
[Oculus of Madness Health: 0/15,000]

The Oculus of Madness let out one final psychic scream that reverberated through the chamber, then its body began to collapse in on itself. The smaller eyes exploded one by one, the tentacles withered and fell away, and the entire massive structure crumpled like an empty sack.

As it died, the world seemed to ripple around me, and the chamber returned to its normal appearance. A deep voice that seemed to come from the Tower itself announced:

[TOWER ANNOUNCEMENT]
[Oculus of Madness has been defeated!]
[New Solo Record: 4 attacks!]
[Previous Record: 17 attacks by Aerilius the Undying]
[Congratulations, Adventurer XxPussySlayer420xX!]

A notification appeared before me:

[Boss Defeated: Oculus of Madness]
[Experience Gained: 5,000]
[Progress to Level 21: 20.67%]
[Dual Wielding Proficiency increased to 80.2]
[Items Obtained:]
• Ocular Core (Legendary) x1
• Eye of Revelation (Epic) x1
• Tentacle Extract (Rare) x12
• Charm of Ascension (Unique) x1
• Ring of Mental Fortitude (Epic) x1

I walked over to the pile of items that had materialized where the Oculus had fallen. Most were typical boss drops like crafting materials and components, but two caught my immediate attention: the Charm of Ascension and the Ring of Mental Fortitude.

The Charm was a simple-looking medallion with the number "11" engraved on it, glowing with a soft blue light. According to what I'd learned, this would allow me to access floors eleven through twenty.

The Ring, however, was unexpected. I examined its properties:

[Ring of Mental Fortitude]
[Epic Quality]
[Properties:]
• Mental Resistance: +75% resistance to mind-affecting abilities
• Fear Immunity: Complete immunity to fear effects
• Clarity of Thought: +25% to all mental skill checks
• Special Ability: Mind Blank (Once per day, become completely immune to all mental intrusions for 5 minutes)
[Requirements: None]

This was a significant upgrade. I slipped it onto my finger, feeling a slight tingle as its enchantments activated. The mental resistance would be particularly useful in the upper floors, if everyone's warnings about the Tower's psychological challenges were accurate.

I collected the rest of the items, then approached a door that had appeared at the far end of the chamber. It bore the number "11" in the same glowing script as the Charm.

When I touched the Charm to the door, it reacted immediately, the glow intensifying as the door slowly swung open to reveal another staircase spiraling upward.

I touched my communication crystal. "Witch? Can you hear me?"

Her voice came through, slightly distorted but clear enough. "Chuck! Are you alright? It's been hours since your last check-in."

"I'm fine," I replied. "Just reached floor ten and defeated the Oculus of Madness."

There was a long pause, then: "You WHAT? Already? That's... Chuck, that's impossible! The Oculus is a Tower boss!"

"Was a Tower boss," I corrected. "I got its ring and the Charm of Ascension. Heading to floor eleven now."

"Wait! The safe zone on floor ten should have facilities to rest, repair equipment, stock up on supplies—"

"There's no safe zone on ten," I interrupted. "Just the boss room."

"That can't be right," she said, confusion evident in her voice. "Every tenth floor is supposed to have a safe zone."

I looked around the empty chamber. "Well, this one doesn't. Just the boss and now a door to eleven."

Another pause. "That's... not normal. The Tower is adapting to you somehow. Be careful, Chuck. If it's changing its rules, that means it sees you as something... special."

"I'll be careful," I promised. "Talk to you when I reach floor sixteen."

"Sixteen? Chuck, that's—"

I ended the communication and stepped through the doorway to floor eleven. The real challenge was just beginning, but with my dual wielding proficiency continuing to improve and the new Ring of Mental Fortitude, I felt ready for whatever the Tower might throw at me next.

If the first ten floors were any indication, this was going to be a considerably shorter climb than anyone had anticipated.

Comments

Caught up. Man, I don't know if you're writing alone or you're using AI assistance but you really need to work on consistency. Through the book and now through the preview chapters there are often logical inconsistencies, issues with system messages and various characterization problems. I strongly recommend you sit down and build an excel sheet for the system part and a full plot outline for the story before continuing, otherwise the "plotholes" will just keep accumulating and it will be a real pity for a story that has such amazing potential (and masterful usage of the english language) to be marred by that. You're writing a story about an obsessive numbers guy for an audience that cares about numbers in a genre, LitRPG that's defined by numbers. so you can't have wrong numbers. You have an amazing opportunity here to enter the hall of fame of stories about neurodivergent characters (Cerim's Hell Difficulty Tutorial & X-RHODEN-X's Stubborn Skillgrinder), don't waste it.
