Chapter 1 Preview - How I Became The World's Strongest Warrior Book 2!

I stared at the luminescent blob jiggling in front of me. The Star Slime's body sparkled with tiny pinpoints of light that looked like a miniature galaxy trapped in gelatin. It was aesthetically pleasing, I supposed, but that wasn't why I'd spent the past fourteen days hunting them.

"Come on," I muttered, raising my Crystalline Evolution Blade. "Drop the damn fragment."

The sword hummed in my hand, its tri-elemental energy cycling through its now-familiar pattern of fire, ice, and nature. It was showing off. After all these weeks together, I was convinced the weapon had developed a personality. A showboating personality.

I swung once, and the blade passed through the Star Slime with embarrassing ease.

THUNK.

[Perfect Strike Activated!]
[Base Damage: 29.3]
[Weapon Bond Bonus: +13.19]
[Strength Amulet Bonus: +5%]
[Proficiency Differential: 3,385 (Attacker: 3,400 vs Target: 15)]
[Proficiency Damage Bonus: +338.5 × 1.05 = 355.43]
[Perfect Strike Multiplier: x9]
[Total Damage: 3,581.28]
[Star Slime has been completely obliterated]
[Warning: Excessive Damage]
[Area Effect Damage triggered due to force of impact]
[Experience gained: 0.000094]
[Items obtained: Star Slime Core x1]
[Currency gained: 3 copper]

The Star Slime didn't die so much as it exploded into a shower of luminescent particles that hung in the air momentarily before dissipating. The impact created a small crater in the cave floor, sending ripples across the shallow pool. Nearby crystal formations vibrated from the shockwave. What had once been a galaxy trapped in gelatin was now just scattered stardust.

The sword hummed with what almost felt like disappointment. Even with its incredible damage output, these were still just Level 5 enemies being struck with the equivalent force of a meteor impact. It wasn't even a fight… it was pest control.

I sighed as I bent down to collect the core. Just another standard drop, worth maybe 3 copper to the right buyer. Not the Star Resonance fragment I needed.

My equipment status flashed through my mind, a now-automatic process after any kill:

[Crystalline Evolution Blade]

[Unique Quality, Level 19]

Base Damage: 29.3

Elemental Affinities:

 - Fire: 38%

 - Ice: 33%

 - Nature: 28%

Enchantments:

 - Level 3 Offensive: +25% damage

 - Level 3 Defensive: +20% damage reduction

Sentience Development: 31.4%

Crystal Fragments: 4/5 Star Resonance Collected

Four out of five. Two weeks of grinding, and I was still one fragment short. According to NatTheCat's calculations, which Peter had verified, I needed exactly five Star Resonance fragments to upgrade my sword's enchantments to Level 5, which would boost the offensive bonus to +35% damage and the defensive to +30% damage reduction.

Ten percent extra damage and another ten percent damage reduction. It was worth every monotonous second in this Level 5 dungeon.

I continued through the glittering cave, the walls embedded with luminescent crystals that cast everything in a soft blue glow. My Enhanced Adaptive Spider Silk Armor rustled softly as I moved, the basilisk hide reinforcements offering perfect protection against the weak attacks of the cave's inhabitants.

[Enhanced Adaptive Spider Silk Armor]

[Exceptional Quality, Level 19]

Base Defense: 68.3

Enchantments:

 - Level 4 Defensive: +20% overall damage reduction

 - Elemental Weave: 10% resistance to fire, ice, and nature damage

Special Properties:

 - Self-Repair: Regenerates 1% durability per hour

 - Crystal Scorpion Integration: 15% chance to reflect physical damage

A group of Crystal Beetles scuttled toward me, their faceted carapaces reflecting the blue light in dazzling patterns. I almost felt bad as I systematically eliminated them with precise swings of my sword. Almost.

The experience was practically nonexistent, a fact I'd reconciled myself with when I started this grind. My Level 19 status meant these Level 3-7 creatures offered almost no experience value. Still, I wasn't here for that. I was here for a specific material, and nothing else mattered.

My Imperial Wingcase Cloak swirled around me as I moved through the cave, its adaptive camouflage property shifting its iridescent green surface to match the blue-tinted environment. The cloak was Witch's masterpiece, crafted from the Elder Queen's wingcases we'd collected during our desert expedition.

[Imperial Wingcase Cloak]

[Unique Quality, Level 19]

Base Properties:

 - Adaptive Camouflage: +40% to stealth in natural environments

 - Regenerative Weave: Recovers 0.5% health per minute while in motion

Special Properties:

 - Emergency Shield: Once per day, can create an absolute barrier against a single attack

 - Queen's Crystal Fragment: 10% chance to temporarily increase all stats by 15% in combat

I'd been pleasantly surprised by the cloak's functionality. The emergency shield had saved me from an unexpected cave collapse three days ago, and the regenerative properties meant I could extend my grinding sessions without returning to town for healing.

Next, I encountered a cluster of Starlight Crystals, a non-aggressive plant-type entity that only attacked if disturbed. I carefully harvested the valuable crystalline growths from their stems, earning me a modest 45 copper per cluster. Not my primary objective, but every resource was worth collecting.

As I moved deeper into the cave, I absently touched the two rings on my fingers. Count Vreyus's Signet Ring on my right hand and his Lieutenant's on my left. Both offered modest defensive benefits, but their enhanced night vision properties were particularly useful in this dimly lit environment.

[Count Vreyus's Signet Ring]

[Rare, Unique Historical Item]

Properties:

 - Damage Reduction: 2%

 - Magic Resistance: 3%

 - Enhanced Night Vision: +120% visibility in darkness

[Lieutenant's Signet Ring]

[Rare, Unique Historical Item]

Properties:

 - Damage Reduction: 1%

 - Magic Resistance: 2%

 - Enhanced Night Vision: +80% visibility in darkness

 - Minor Regeneration: +0.2% health recovery per minute in darkness

The deeper sections of the cave contained stronger enemies, including the occasional Crystal Guardian, a Level 7 entity that posed something resembling a challenge. Not because it could harm me, but because it took two hits instead of one to eliminate.

I found one blocking a narrow passage, its crystalline body pulsing with stored energy. It fired a beam of concentrated light at me, which I easily deflected with my sword. Two precise strikes later, and it crumbled into valuable fragments.

[Crystal Guardian Eliminated]

[Experience Gained: 0.000214]

[Progress to Level 20: 16.673409%]

[Item Dropped: Guardian Crystal Core]

Guardian Crystal Cores sold for about 75 copper each, making them the most valuable common drop in the cave. I'd accumulated 143 of them over the past two weeks, a secondary income stream while pursuing my primary objective.

I absently touched the strength amulet hanging around my neck. I'd gotten it during that week of goblin hunting with my bare hands, back when I was waiting for NatTheCat to upgrade my sword. The amulet wasn't particularly impressive looking, just a crude iron disc with primitive etchings, but it provided a 5% boost to physical prowess, which translated to more damage through my proficiency bonus. Every percentage point mattered in the long run. The goblins had called it their "champion's token" or something equally dramatic. To me, it was just another +5% to my damage calculation. Another small step toward optimal performance.

[Goblin Champion's Token]
[Uncommon, Level 12]
Properties:
- Physical Prowess: +5%
- Intimidation: +10% against goblinoid creatures
- Durability: Exceptional (cannot be destroyed by conventional means)
Special Effect:
- Bloodlust: After 5 consecutive kills within 30 seconds, grants +3% to all damage for 10 seconds
- Recognition: Intelligent goblinoids recognize the wearer as a proven warrior
Value: Estimated 3,500 copper to collectors
Note: Originally belonged to a legendary Goblin Warlord who united seven tribes

My sword hummed with what I'd come to recognize as impatience. Since developing its partial sentience, it seemed to enjoy the challenge of fighting stronger opponents. These low-level cave creatures bored it. Still, it was a sword, and if it wanted to get stronger, it would get over it.

"I know," I told it quietly. "But we need that last Star Resonance."

The blade pulsed with reluctant acknowledgment. I'd stopped being self-conscious about talking to my sword weeks ago. It understood me better than most people did.

I checked the clock interface. It was approaching noon, which meant another Star Slime would be spawning soon. They appeared like clockwork, one per hour, and I'd developed a precise route through the cave that ended at the main spawning chamber just as each new Star Slime materialized.

As I entered the central chamber, the familiar blue glow intensified. The ceiling was studded with star-like crystals that reflected in the shallow pool dominating the center of the room. Right on schedule, the water began to bubble and shimmer, coalescing into the distinctive form of another Star Slime.

This one was larger than average, its body more densely packed with tiny lights. A good sign? Maybe. Or maybe just random variation with no statistical significance. Either way, I readied my blade.

The Star Slime sensed my presence and bobbed toward me, trailing sparkles across the water's surface. I waited, allowing it to approach before striking with perfect form. The blade cleaved through it effortlessly, its tri-elemental energy leaving a momentary afterimage in the air.

[Item Dropped: Star Resonance Fragment]

I froze, staring at the notification. Then I quickly bent down to retrieve the items before they could despawn. The Star Slime Core was the usual translucent blob with embedded lights. But beside it lay something different: a perfectly formed crystalline star, no larger than my thumbnail, pulsing with concentrated energy.

The fifth Star Resonance Fragment.

I carefully placed it in my secure pouch with the other four fragments, then checked my status window for confirmation.

[Crystal Fragments: 5/5 Star Resonance Collected]

[Sword Upgrade Available at Master Enchanter]

A sense of satisfaction washed over me. Two weeks of methodical grinding had finally yielded the necessary components. I could now upgrade my sword's enchantments to Level 5, a significant improvement to my overall combat effectiveness.

I completed my circuit of the cave, eliminating the remaining respawned creatures and collecting their drops. No point wasting potential resources, even if they were minimal compared to my primary objective.

As I exited the cave into the bright afternoon sunlight, I checked my experience progress once more.

[Status: XxPussySlayer420xX]

Level: 19

Experience: 19,273.612947 / 115,200 (16.73% to Level 20)

Beginning of Star Slime Expedition: 16,666.908000 / 115,200 (14.47% to Level 20)

Total Gained: 2,606.704947 (2.26% progress to Level 20)

Two weeks of grinding in a low-level dungeon had yielded just 2.26% progress toward Level 20. Inefficient from an experience perspective, but the Star Resonance fragments were worth the opportunity cost.

I did some quick mental calculations. At my current growth rate in appropriate level zones, I'd reach Level 20 in approximately 36.73 days of optimal grinding. That was acceptable.

My sword hummed with anticipation as I set off toward the city. It knew what was coming: an upgrade that would enhance its capabilities and, by extension, mine. The numbers would go up again. That was all that mattered.

As I walked, the Imperial Wingcase Cloak swirled around me, its color shifting from the cave-matching blue back to its default iridescent green. The Crystalline Evolution Blade occasionally pulsed with energy, cycling through its tri-elemental affinities as if testing their current parameters one last time before the impending upgrade.

It had taken fourteen days, 320 Star Slimes, and approximately 16,500 other cave creatures to acquire these five tiny fragments. The probability had worked out almost exactly as I'd calculated: a 1% drop rate from Star Slimes meant I should have encountered approximately 3.36 fragments from them, with the remainder coming from the 0.001% chance from regular mobs.

I'd actually been slightly luckier than the statistical average predicted. Not that luck had anything to do with it. This was simply persistence and optimization. The willingness to perform the same actions repeatedly with perfect consistency until the desired outcome was achieved.

I glanced at the pouch containing the Star Resonance fragments. Ten percent more damage. Ten percent more damage reduction. Those numbers might seem small to someone who didn't understand optimization, but I knew better. In the long term, over thousands of encounters, those percentage improvements would compound significantly.

Mayra would be waiting at The Broken Shield with her usual stew, probably another note added to the growing collection she kept leaving in my room. Witch would want to know if I'd found anything interesting besides the Star Resonance. Peter and NatTheCat would be eager to begin the upgrade process.

But first, I needed to visit Gerald to sell the accumulated resources from two weeks of cave grinding:

[Accumulated Resources]

Star Slime Cores (312): 3 copper each = 936 copper

Crystal Shards (724): 5 copper each = 3,620 copper

Guardian Crystal Cores (143): 75 copper each = 10,725 copper

Starlight Crystal Clusters (189): 45 copper each = 8,505 copper

Miscellaneous Cave Resources: ~5,000 copper

Total Estimated Value: 28,786 copper

A respectable secondary outcome for what had primarily been a targeted material grind. Not that I needed the money after the vampire expedition's rewards, but efficient resource collection was simply good practice.

The city gates came into view as the sun began its descent toward the horizon. I estimated I'd reach NatTheCat's workshop with enough time for the preliminary upgrade preparation to begin today. The actual enchantment process would likely take until tomorrow, but that was acceptable.

The sword hummed contentedly at my side, and I found myself smiling slightly in response. We'd accomplished our immediate objective, and soon we'd be stronger for it. The grind had been good.

The numbers would go up again tomorrow. And that was all that mattered.

Comments

Wasn't it Peter doing the upgrade when he was punching goblins?

I'm confused: is there missing content between the end of Book 1 on Kindle and this?
