Blog #13: Halloween Weekend

I told you all that the Halloween party shows would be different!

For those of you who aren't in the know yet, the big surprise was that I would be playing with a band for the first time since right before the pandemic - making it just under five years since our last public performance, and even longer since our last big headliner. I want to thank everyone who came out for making it such a meaningful experience and such a thrilling reunion. I felt five years younger, felt closer to old friends than I have in a while, and felt a really fulfilling sense of inspiration and encouragement from seeing the audience having such a good time rocking out with us.

Having not done a rock concert since 2019, I was definitely somewhat rusty, but from the looks of the moshing, dancing, crowd surfing and screams that didn't make a different to the folks who came out. It was so cool to see the OG fans rocking out the way they used to way back in the day, and to see that culture spreading to the newcomers. The Tapeworms days from like 2015-2019 were so much fun and had such a great sense of community, and even though the crowd sizes make the experience quite different, I felt some of that again.

And it was really cool to finally bring the new material to a full-band context! Because of the pandemic, I wasn't able to tour for The Normal Album, and because of a million factors, was never able to tour with a band or even do one-offs until now. I'm thrilled to finally be able to open a show with Suburbia Overture like I've always dreamt of, and it was really encouraging to see people rocking out to tunes from ICIMI too.

But  my rustiness wasn't helped by the fact that it was my first time using proper in-ear monitors onstage, which has a major impact on how the whole thing works. I'm used to hearing my mix onstage using speakers at the front of the stage generally referred to as "wedges," which can allow you to hear the whole room as well as your own mix, but brings with it a host of issues. Having speakers pointed at you onstage makes microphone feedback a possibility that requires all kinds of audio engineering considerations to have to come into play, which also limits the freedom of what kind of mix you can expect from them. It also competes with on-stage sound; the amp sounds, the drum kit, the horns, and of course all the noise coming in from the audience. It has to be fine tuned in a way that concert environments can make very difficult if you want to get a really good mix, and having a good mix for yourself as a performer makes all the difference in the world in terms of your performance. The main benefit of wedges is also the drawback - you get the real, in-person sound of the room and the audience.

In-ear monitors, or "IEMs" are often considered a game-changer by a lot of musicians. By putting sometimes customized earbuds sometimes pretty deep into your ear canals instead of having an on-stage mix, you can get your very own personalized mix without all of the problems that come from relying on wedges. The IEM system Kevin Antreassian (producer of SELF-iSH and mixing engineer for ICIMI and TNA '24) built for me and Simon Ficken (recording engineer for ICIMI) operated for the band and I allows each member to alter their mix as the show goes if they need to, by using an app on their phone. Good IEMs will also block out external noise, theoretically allowing you to really zero in on your personalized mix so that you can hear every detail. This is especially helpful for me as a vocalist, because I can see my piano but I can't see my vocal cords. The main simultaneous drawback and benefit are the opposite of those of using wedges - I can't hear the real in-person sound of the room. Plus I was struggling with the tech and getting the damn things to stay in.

For this weekend, I had a backup wedge mix as well, so by the end of both shows I was working with my left IEM in and my right ear exposed, because over the course of the show I felt myself struggling with my own mix more and more, and at the end I decided I needed to focus on hearing the room. Funny enough, at the end of the weekend, my right ear hurt and my left didn't. If for no other reason than to protect my hearing, I might stick with the IEMs even if I'm never able to find a satisfying way to use them. I expect they will eventually though. Some artists can't stand them, (I was amazed to notice Andrew Bird goes without them - his vocal intonation should not be that good with wedges! But then again being a violinist is much better for ear training than being a keyboardist and his band is smaller) but others swear by them. At the moment I'm torn, but we'll see!

From the looks of videos I've seen, my vocal intonation was far better this weekend than it ever has been at full-band shows in the past. Years of practice, better technique, actual vocal self-care, being able to hear myself clearly in my IEM mix, and transposing songs where beneficial all really paid off. But challenges with focus, errors in how I strategize my energy usage, and difficulties with the IEM system undid some of that. I feel like my keyboard technique has improved too, although lack of practice using a mic on a stand instead of a headset and the limitations of that, plus just rustiness on the songs and general challenges that all instrumentalists encounter sometimes, had me kind of sloppy there. I'm more satisfied with my work on Sunday than on Saturday, but not entirely satisfied with either of my performances this weekend. That's okay though - it's my first time back, first time doing a lot of things, and I have plenty of time between now and the next time I do it, so I'm feeling great about the whole thing.

My band absolutely fucking killed it, I was so grateful to be playing with such unbelievably tight players. I've always been thrilled with Mario, Mike, and Berger's playing, but they've kicked it up a notch over the years, and not only has their skill level improved but their ear for the nuances has too. I'm also thrilled to be playing with DJ Scully on bass. The man is a clock (Kevin calls him "the 8th Note King" because he's always perfectly on the click in studio) and puts on a hell of a show. Super professional and experienced, and luckily a good hang too. Great guys, all of them. Their performances made up for my flubs, and gave me a lot to fall back on when I needed to. I told the guys this a few times now and I meant it - the songs sounded the best they ever have this past weekend, and I can't wait to do it again.

I've probably explained this on here before, but something a lot of people don't know is that there wasn't an actual "Tapeworms" until after the two Tapeworms records were out. The lineup people know best came together in 2017, but even then has featured a lot of other folks. It was a revolving door for a long time, and always had an element of that when necessary. Will Wood and the Tapeworms was a sort of a moniker for my work as a singer-songwriter designed so I could market my full-band shows on the local circuit, and I stopped promising people a band when it stopped being feasible financially or logistically. The situation was always sort of that whoever I play with I call The Tapeworms, (but once a Tapeworm always a Tapeworm, and crew members/other personnel have always been honorary Tapeworms too) but as time has gone on that's made less sense and been harder for people to catch on to. It would feel weird to call a lineup with Mike, Mario, and Berger anything else, but I know future shows I won't be able to get all of them for, so I don't know what to do from there. I like giving the band a name to draw attention to them for their talents, and not using their name might make people think I'm taking credit away from them. But when you change lineups significantly people get the wrong idea if you don't change the name. But if you do change the name people think it's a new project... too much to juggle! I suppose we'll play it by ear for future shows.

Anyway, thank you all again for such a memorable weekend, and big shout out to the band, to Simon, to Jake and Gabe, and to Matt, Austin, and my girlfriend. And of course the crew at the venue (except that one guy, fuck him). They all worked so hard and did such a killer job. Last but certainly not least - thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a great time. Hope to see you all again soon.

Now it's time to try and switch gears back to performing Slouching Towards Branson. It's weird to go from playing rockstar to whiplashing back to my usual thing. While also preparing to take a flight out to the west coast for a month-long tour. I have to have a bunch of stuff ordered and shipped out there, get some things picked up there, and figure out what I can fly with. The upcoming run is huge, and it's driving me crazy to know that I am nowhere near the home stretch. Gotta refresh somehow, and I don't think this is how you do it... I'll make it work! Maybe taking some time away from it will have been good. They say taking breaks between big study sessions is better than repeat crams, so let's hope that principle applies here. The good news is I'm starting the west coast run with a couple 100 cap shows, so that'll give me a low-stakes chance to brush off any dust for the big theaters. See you out there folks!

Much love,

-ww

I was incredibly lucky to be at the Petaluma show on Wednesday!! Even without the rest of the gang, what a phenomenal show--I think maybe one of my favorite shows, ever. Hope to see you again in my neck of the woods someday! <3

The Sunday concert was out of this WORLD (words do it no justice tbh its better conveyed through a scream of joy) and it was easy to coordinate with the audience around me so that we were safe and having fun. Also, I really loved how you and Mr. James performed Ferryman on Sunday! I hope there's a recording of it bc I desperately want to re-experience it 🫡 (also it was my first time in Asbury Park, let alone New Jersey! What a beautiful place I'll be visiting again!)

Nikolai

It was such an honor to see you guys live on Saturday. Me and my friend were like second in line and heard the sound checking and we were absolutely loosing it thinking we were being pranked. We made a ton of new friends as well and I talked to some og fans who were ecstatic to be there. Thank you so much for making that a wonderful night!!!

Hi Will! Kinda of a new fan, entirely new to Patreon 👋 I love reading your blog posts and seeing your thoughts about how the tour is going. Hearing about the technical aspects of what makes a show is super interesting. And seeing how critical you are of yourself and that with every performance you learn something different is inspiring to say the least. I’m looking forward to seeing you in AZ! The upgraded venue sounds super exciting! 👏

fun read, and everyone stay strong and safe <3 <3 <3

Asbury Park was so damn cool. I've been a fan for years, but you were top notch, and your band was incredible, really electric. I had such a fun time skeleton-ing around, and your reveal was crazy fun. You rock, dude- thanks for a concert I'll never forget!

I always feel a little bit weird commenting on these posts but…. As a long time fan, the Saturday Asbury Park show was honestly one of the BEST shows that I’ve been to in a while. Even with technical difficulties, you and the band absolutely fucking killed it. The camaraderie in the back of the room in the pit was palpable, and the sense of joy in the room was amazing. Absolutely killer fucking show, hope to see everyone at the next one!

I was at the show on 11/2 in Asbury Park! I was a nervous wreck the whole time, constantly apologizing and trembling. It was my first time going to one of the shows and most of all I just did not want to make anyone uncomfortable. Here's the thing, you were all the most wonderful, chill, and reassuring people I ever met. I saw Mario come in and it didn't click right away that it was him, and I ended up apologizing to him later, because I genuinely felt bad and he said "nah it's cool, I still live with my parents." That was probably the single best thing he could have said in that moment. During the panel before the show, whenever Will got asked about the various miserable creative woes we all experience, he simply responded "Yeah, that sucks." Yes, it sucks. I have been burned out for years. "I had not been able to work in some months, had been paralyzed by the conviction that writing was an irrelevant act, that the world as I had understood it no longer existed. If I was to work again at all, it would be necessary for me to come to terms with disorder." Will simply said "Nothing to it but to do it." Just, simply, thank you. I was nervous, I was certainly a mess, but I had the best time. Will got the first art piece I created in years and I sincerely hope he likes it even if it didn't turn out how I wanted (seriously, I hope you love it!). (Also Will gave me a Kit Kat while I tried my hardest not to give away his disguise.)

The shows were both absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for everything that you and the band do, and also for checking in and making sure the crowd was okay. Super cool and majorly respectable when an artist checks in on people like that. Thanks for the compliment on my costume too! Really made my night. Well, everything made my night honestly.

adamm1t

The recordings i've seen so far look absolutely transcendent- even through the phone recordings posted online everything sounds like it must've been amazing. Would commit felonies for wav files and professional recordings to watch/listen to later

Mia Martian

I love hearing these technical bits! Good job!!

Aaliyah McElroy

It was a great experience and my first time in a mosh pit which was way more fun than I was expecting. Absolutely thrilled I got to see all of you play together :)

Maxton Gray

Saw some clips and the show looked so amazing, you guys really killed it! I hope to one day see suburbia overture live, but i've never heard against the kitchen floor sound so beautiful, im genuinely so amazed at your guys' performance

Matthew Tailby

i hope we get videos of these! as a huge fan of the real will wood album ive been looking forward to new tapeworms performances for so long😭

Jamie64

WHAT? YOU PLAYED WITH THE TAPEWORMS? CRAZY

Clancy

I went to the first show (I was the dude dressed as Wall-E, although a few people mistook the orange jumpsuit for that of an escaped convict lol) and it was seriously some of the most fun I’ve ever had! Hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to, you and the band fucking killed it. By the way whose idea was it to play the Luigi’s Mansion theme? That was such a fun surprise, definitely a highlight of the show for me

Opticko

sunday was my first ever pit show, because im a young lad, and i had the time of damn life--especially because the setlist was pretty much all of my favorite songs you've ever made. tickets to that concert were my 18th birthday present and i could not have asked for anything better, because i've been dreaming of seeing a tapeworms show since i started listening to your stuff ~4 years ago. thank you for the genuinely amazing concert, everyone did a fantastic job, i cant wait for the full band tour!

mr counter

I was having them made but the company dropped the ball on getting them to me in time! I'll definitely be trying them!

William

I really hope you a tour with the band! I missed the Kalamazoo show unfortunately. I'd love another chance to see a show!

Nancy Delapenha

I'm so glad your break and reunion with the Tapeworms seemed to refresh you.

Wendy Bullinger

i was so happy to see mario cam on my instagram again,,, you all looked like you were having the time of your lives

Kroger

I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get the chance to see a Tapeworms show so that was an amazing surprise! One of my dreams was to see Front Street live while drunk enough for the danger to be real, and moshing to it was even better. I’m super excited to see the main tour, but I’m still not sure this weekend was even real!

Lauren Peldo

Both nights were awesome! I usually hang out on the edge of the pit because I’m not big on being touched, but I went for it and had the time of my life. Everyone was going wild but also super polite, which is exactly how it should be :)

Lauren Peldo

the show was fantastic, and definitely some of the most fun i think i’ve ever had at a concert! definite agree on your vocal improvement, there were several points during the show where i remember thinking holy shit, will sounds great. good luck on the next leg of the tour! looking forward to seeing stb when you come back over to the east coast :)

claire costello

Also uhhh dont know if I should ask this but just theoretically, is a Europe tour feasible anytime in the future or do you think you'll stay with just the US? I mean yeah, I dont know how many listeners you have over here but uh, yeah, cant say I wouldnt absolutely love that. (Not getting my hopes up at all tho, it is a long way from there, Im aware💀)

Anastasia Nicolaenco

Best weekend, thank YOU!

Ceceilia S

Can we expect more full-band shows in the future? 👉👈

The Green Kasey

Thank you and the band for putting on an unforgettable show!! It was so cool to meet you !!

Kristen Sutcliff

I was at the 11/02 dressed as the Tapeworm and I nearly cried when you said the band was with you during the Q&A, it felt like I manifested it or something. Also as an audiologist I spent a lot of the show thinking thinking about how custom ear molds with a canal lock would work wonders for your IEM system LMAO

Kristen Sutcliff

When yesterday’s show was over, my friends and family asked me how it was. I couldn’t find the right words to describe the right feelings, but I’ll try again. That was the best show I have ever, ever been to. All of your work speaks to me because it is raw and real, but this show was so fucking incredible. After being dealt a shitty hand of cards this year, last night’s show made me feel so real, so alive, and so happy. I’m sitting here trying to think of how to describe how it felt to be in such an energetic crowd with the same interests that I have, yelling the lyrics to my favorite song. Even though I’ve had almost a full day to think about it, I’m realizing I’m still struggling to find the words. I’ll just say, it was good. It was incredible and it was something that will be a treasure to remember. It was an honor to see you perform Slouching a few weeks ago, and to see you with the band together in a different environment and style. Both shows were phenomenal and if you decide to write or tour again in the future, I’ll be so happy to see it and see more of your passion come out. Thank you.

Viridian Lowe

Man this show sounds like it was so so much fun!! Glad it was a positive experience for you overall and soo happy for everyone who was able to go!! (Unfortunately cant go myself since uh... Europe, but ya know, gotta be happy for everyone else :D) -Much much love from Germany and good luck with the rest of your shows man!! And yess breaks are important, take care Will!

Anastasia Nicolaenco

I’m so glad to see you doing another full band tour like you used to!! I hope to be able to see you again on your next tour, especially if you’re bringing back the Tapeworms (honorary or not) :)

Griffyngrove

Went to night one and it was fucking amazing. You all absolutely killed it and it was by far the best concert I have been to! I bought the tickets on a whim and it was the best decision I have ever made. After having a horrible past few years, Saturday night was the first time in years I have thought “Being here really is worth it.” Thank you for such an amazing time and please take care of yourself :)

jay

I looked at getting tickets to the NJ shows and now I'm absolutely kicking myself that I didn't. Sounds like the shows were awesome and I'm counting down the days till the NYC shows!

Ningy

Hope you enjoyed your break!! Unfortunately I'm a west coast fan so I didn't get to witness the those Halloween shows but from the videos I've seen, I can tell it was incredible. Also so excited Suburbia was performed live! It's such a fantastic song :)

riley s

Idk what I'd do with myself *IF* there's a full band tour on the East Coast

a a d i n

Saturday was seriously the goofiest, craziest, most passionate mosh pit I’ve ever had the pleasure of being thrown into. Y’all tore the place up! Wishing you a nice rest after such an exciting weekend :)

Jules

I definitely hope to be able to get some videos of it for Patreon yeah!

William

Will the show be posted!?!?!

Benjamin

Wonderful to hear you had so much fun and enjoyed the shows! Hope you go on tour with the full band again someday, would love to see it, even if I'm too old for the mosh pit ;)

Christa
