Superman 2

George talks about a bit more about why he didn't like Superman 2 in the intro to Andor 204-206. I get some of his points but somehow I feel he is missing the blockbuster vibe of the film which was an Avengers level hit. For example, some of the scenes are there to show off cutting edge special effects not to further the plot.

I was a little disappointed with your reactions here because I find Superman's conundrum here really unusual and moving. First off, he had to be mortal to sleep with Lois. There was no way he could safely do so otherwise. So he had to make that decision simply to be with a mortal woman. But more importantly, Superman experiences mortality -- which he badly needed to do -- only to realize that his responsibilities to the planet mean that he cannot live as a mortal, and that doing so is a selfish decision. In both movies, we've watched Superman struggle with the loneliness of his situation as a superhero while setting up his comically powerless Clark alter ego as someone who is often ignored and disregarded because he is kind, humble, and vulnerable. It's been such an interesting conundrum to see him so immersed in his role as Clark that his feelings are visibly hurt when Lois prefers Superman even though we know he's just "pretending." Which is why I love the storyline of Superman II and think it's so interesting and well done. The core fight is between Superman and Clark himself -- between his immortal and mortal selves. Sure, the sudden random powers in the final confrontation are a little goofy, and I don't think Supes needed to go back and humiliate the bully, but it does teach the bully a lesson, and overall, I still think the movie is largely successful at what it is trying to say. I also found the kiss at the end very clear. It was very obvious to me that Lois loses her memory (which is why she almost faints) and then is back to pre-Superman/Clark-knowledge Lois again while Clark is safely back acting out as goofy Clark. For me, the movie is ultimately really lovely and tragic, and beautifully acted by Reeve. The realization by Superman that he will always love Lois. And yet because he loves Lois -- and all of the humanity he protects -- in some way, he will always have to be alone. I think the movie is terrific and the plot is concise, really unusual (in a good way), and well-done.

Superman needing to give up his powers to be with a human isn't at all arbitrary; unless they left Earth for a planet with a red sun every time they had sex, it could be fatal to the human in multiple ways. In the late 1960s SF author Larry Niven wrote an essay (which is available for free online) called _Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex_ discussing all of the potential problems, including Superman's super-powered jism perforating his partner as well as any object within miles. He amusingly points out that when Clark hit puberty, Pa Kent would have been constantly patching the farmhouse's roof every time Clark jerked off.

HOW am I supposed to watch the uncut version of Superman II, I joined Patreon and then went to Superman II clicked on the link for watching it without having to have my own copy, and then a note pops up saying to check my account and there is NO link given to do that, and no way to "x" out of it. I went to my account and I paid and everything should be ok, but I still can't see the unedited cut for "Superman II" PLEASE HELP, I keep going around in circles on this. Should I just cancel my membership?? Thanks! This is really complicated.

Patti Crichton

If you put the brightness on your TV up, you can see in the wide shots where a black blob has been placed to cover Marlon Brando as Jor-El.

Sorry you guys didn't like it, it's a fictional superhero movie that their powers don't make sense, again it's a fictional superhero movie, LMAO it's not a documentary about mortals. I saw it in the movies and that audience generally loved it. You guys just seemed so upset, that you almost became a parody of yourselves. It was entertaining listening to you both and well worth my monthly contribution :) Oh and by the way the critiques of the time loved it and it is still highly rated.......................................................................................................But thanks for the entertainment you guys are funny :) :) :) On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Superman II has an approval rating of 88% based on 109 reviews, with an average rating of 7.6/10. The site's critics consensus reads, "The humor occasionally stumbles into slapstick territory, and the special effects are dated, but Superman II meets, if not exceeds, the standard set by its predecessor."[50] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 83 out of 100, based on 16 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[51] Audiences polled by CinemaScore during its opening weekend gave the film a rare average grade of "A+" on an A+ to F scale.[52] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, who gave the original film very high acclaim,[53] also praised Superman II, giving it four out of four stars. He wrote in his review, "This movie's most intriguing insight is that Superman's disguise as Clark Kent isn't a matter of looks as much as of mental attitude: Clark is disguised not by his glasses but by his ordinariness. Beneath his meek exterior, of course, is concealed a superhero. And, the movie subtly hints, isn't that the case with us all?"[54] Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune awarded three-and-a-half out of four stars[55] and declared it "better than the original."[56] Sheila Benson of the Los Angeles Times called it "the most interesting 'Superman' yet," adding, "This film's fun comes from character, dialogue and performance, not effects. There are, of course, enough effects to fill a dozen Saturday matinee serials but they aren't necessarily the film's deliciousness."[57]

George are you saying you dont think this movie is perfect?? ๐Ÿคฃ still one of my fave superman movies. Watching as a kid it was magic....ive yet to see the Donnor cut which is supposed to be the better yet unfinished version.

Dwight Scarn

Fairly obvious why he would have to live like a mortal man. If he remained a superhero he would probably (unintentionally) hurt Lois when he consummates the wedding.

Darren Harrison

clearly the episode should have ended with, "Kneel before Trivia!"

Spider-Man lose his powers in the comics in ASM Annual #1. That's what is what Spider-Man 2 pulled from

Yes. A distinguished career and this is what everyone remembers.

RIP Terence Stamp (Zod).

Happy Hanukkah

If you're already bringing up L&C, then surely the greatest burn is that delivered by Tempus. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

My relationship with this film is weird. When I first saw it, I hit all the emotional and awe notes the producers wanted. Since seeing Superman IV and L&C (with the divine Teri Hatcher), Iโ€™ve revisited Ursaโ€™s casual burn of both Kidderโ€™s Lois and Kal-El and thought, โ€œYโ€™know, she kinda has a point.โ€ Which is tantamount to agreeing with Wicked Witch of the West (non-Elphaba) or the Grand High Witch. And thatโ€™s just alarming.

jmundt33a

They had to redo a lot of the beginning because Marlon Brando was not back and they weren't allowed to use footage from him I believe.

Brendan

That was a good catch by George I seen this movie a lot and never noticed.

Brendan

Given Superman's incredible max speed, would he not cause the molecules in front of him to undergo nuclear fusion? Science!!!

Happy Hanukkah

George in his best Tommy Lee Jones voice: "Otis, I cannot sanction your tomfoolery..."

StonyD

George, if Superman flew max speed without going up in space first, he would set the atmosphere on fire. Don't you know your comic book physics? ;p

StonyD

Which invites a referral to Larry Niven's famous tongue-in-cheek essay "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex." https://larryniven.net/?q=man-of-steel-woman-of-kleenex-by-larry-niven

Happy Hanukkah

Interesting that this film had an impact on later superhero movies, like Spiderman 2 where Peter Parker loses his powers and I also have thought that the first Thor movie had that sequence in the small mid west town where there was a fight taking place between Thor and those enemies from Asgard.

Gary Poussard

Out of curiosity, an obvious question: was the first one not available to you?

Happy Hanukkah

I had to look it up. That third terrorist is indeed Richard "Dursley" Griffiths. :)

Jeesh Simone! Go easy on poor George in that thumb!

Poor George always thinking.

It is.

OK Several things! First - Banger Thumbnail. 2nd - KNEEL BEFORE TRIVIA! Come on guys, it was just laying there. Pick it up. 3rd - Glad to see that they saw how BAD this movie was. Disjointed and completely, bafflingly, strays from the source material. Villains with pointy-telekenisis. Random invisiblity/teleportation/magic mirrorness. The Cellophane Tarp oF DOOMINESS! Mind-Wipe Kissies! These were even worse sins than the 1st movie time-travel-by-flying-really-fast-around-the-earth. Doesn't destroy the earth, makes it travel back in time. The special effects weren't even good for that era. Just a bad movie overall. And I'm glad CineSimone and CineGeorge are honest enough to call it out!

Mastervodo

Family Guy did a parody of the cellophane scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_zRBULj_PU

TalynOne

"He still has his powers and they are together". I think you missed (and I don't blame you at all because it makes no sense) that his kiss wiped her memories at the end and she now doesn't know he's Superman anymore. Edit: Ah, I'm so glad you found out duting the trivia.

Ginger

Yep. You know that when you see that Cannon logo come on the screen during the opening credits for any movie, youโ€™re in for a WILD ride.

Jeff K

I watched this (and the 3rd and 4th movie) all the time as a kid and this one was always my favorite. (I liked the next 2 movies as "good trash films" but genuinely thought this was the great one). Now I wonder if I actually watched the other cut back then because WOW this movie is bad. :D But maybe I just used to overlook all the flaws back then.

Ginger

I actually saw this before I saw the first movie, so for my nostalgia and childhood mind THIS is "real" Superman. Objectively speaking, it's a very flawed movie and clearly the victim of all of the behind-the-scenes problems. The Richard Donner Cut is essentially a whole different movie. Superman I and II were originally conceived as a single cohesive story, and it was only when they were 80% of the way done with this one that the studio fired Donner and re-worked this film into something new. That's why it's so tonally disjointed, has scenes that go nowhere, etc. It still has some banger moments, and is heavily steeped in pop culture. I think my personal favorite is Ursa's "I have powers beyond reason here!"

JBK405

If they watched Superman 3 or 4 then they might consider this movie as more serious. They were both disappointments when I was not yet a teenager. I did not even think about the quality of movies mostly back then But Canon movies were always particulary shit.

Matt O'Keefe

The Donner cut is definitely a lot more serious in tone. It's a bit rough as it's unfinished but I'd be interested in seeing your reaction to that.

Stugotz

So in current DC Superman and Lois do have children, but back when this film was made I believe it was canon in the comics that they couldn't have kids, give the fact they're different species. So that's probably why he had to become human if he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Lois.

Stugotz

Totally forgot that EG Marshall played the president in this. And now Iโ€™m gonna be watching to see if either G or S recognize him as the broker who never sweats in 12 Angry Men.

Jeff K

Watching this reminds me that the Donner Cut of Superman II is a superior film.

Chris Rivard

I'd be curious to see that reaction; I haven't watched the Donner cut since it was first released and I just found ot far too jarring to enjoy since the scenes were unfinished and the sound was off (from what I recall) so it just took me out of it, but I'd certainly be open to revisiting it with G&S.

Jeff K

Reacting to the Donner Cut at a later point could be fun.

dudewheresmycar

Come, Simone of Canada! Kneel before George!
