It’s one of my absolute favourites but I can understand why it wouldn’t be for everyone :) (I’ve never “made” my wife watch it for that reason)

Jeff Norwood-Brown

I’ll definitely second The Fisher King and I love just about anything by Lynch.

REDR58

This movie is so far beyond the edge 😂 -- much better examples of "bizarre" films are: Time Bandits, The Fisher King, or The Fall (2006). Much better story, plot, and characters, much less frantic disorder. 12 Monkeys has all the frantic stuff, but better story. David Lynch gets pretty weird, and creepy, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet are 2 examples, but I prefer Mulholland Drive. Eraserhead is just too weird for my taste.

Jon Johns

I've been such a huge fan of all three movies since I was a kid, but I had no idea they were a trilogy. It makes a lot of sense, though. Highly highly agree that Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen should get on some polls here.

Meggie Doodles

God this was sucha a weird movie. I saw it in elementary school it made me feel very claustrophobic, but the strange visuals and sets never left me. The director is truly a weird visionary!

Dwight Scarn

the director of the movie is the co founder of Monty Python and directed their movies so thats why it feels so Monty Python-esk :D

Alternate interpretation of the explosions: There are no bombs. Stuff just randomly blows up because the system is incompetent. Terrorists are blamed as a distraction... or just more incompetence, assuming terrorists must exist. (See also: Iron Man 3)

Data Cable

I would argue that Dark City has similar vibes to this movie, a bizar unique world that has a specific style to it, both movies are weird, and I watched both of them 10ish years ago for the first time :) btw the wide shots of him flying as an angel is a freaking puppet. in general they used a lot of minatures for the movie "VFX Artists React 175" covered the movie with its special effects and scenes (with Adam Savage btw)

overdev

One of the worst movies I've ever watched. Thumbs down.

Mastervodo

Oh yeah. The torture chamber is the inside of a power station cooling tower. I love that Tuttle literally gets consumed by paperwork.

Jeff Norwood-Brown

I do like The Fisher King as a better combo of Gilliam and Williams.

Daniel Smith

While it appears to be largely riffing on George Orwell's "1984", the blending of dream states and reality is perhaps more like Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge". Terry Gilliam has referred to this movie as the middle entry in his "Trilogy of Imagination", which started with "Time Bandits" and ended with "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". He stated all three concern the "craziness of our awkwardly ordered society and the desire to escape it through whatever means possible". IIRC Jack Lint's daughter was played by Gilliam's actual daughter Holly. The other two movies in the trilogy are also worth watching and just as bonkers.

GAB

I love Gilliam but could never get through Time Bandits or Jabberwocky for some reason. Maybe it’s time for another try…

Jeff Norwood-Brown

Yey! I got you to watch Paul & Brazil!! Now to get you to watch a film with more than one word in its title!! If you want to understand Brazil better, become a civil servant for 31 years - it will all make perfect sense. Right. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen next please. Another Terry Gilliam with a few more Pythons, Uma Thurman and Robin Williams at one point.

Jeff Norwood-Brown

Also, for fellow Brits of a certain age, this features the guy who played Rabies in Maid Marian and her Merry Men (36:49)

Patrick

I saw this movie when it came on VHS back in the day. I'm so glad you gave it a watch. Most people would look at it, shrug their shoulders, say, "I never heard of this," and move to the next title.

Tom Occhipinti

If you want to see more from Terry Gilliam, I would definitely put both Time Bandits, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, on your list. Both are phenomenal and highly representative of Gilliams unique visual style.

dudewheresmycar

Corridor Crew recently did a video on the effects in this(with Adam Savage). The miniature work is amazing.

Patrick

Watching the edited version of this movie will be even more confusing
