You're very clever, George, but it's no use. It's turtles all the way down.

I don't think Simone can make bad-looking thumbnails.

Matt Blanchette

Also did anyone notice the flickering of the cut they reacted to? Seems like many scenes had flickering only the movie and not every scene.

Nice thumbnail

Another movie that came out around the same time as The Matrix is 'existenz' -- starring Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh... have you seen it? Highly recommend it... it's right up there with The Matrix, The 13th Floor, Dark City, etc.

Ben Schwartz

I came across this movie channel flipping late one night. For years I wanted to watch the whole thing including the opening scene I had missed, much to my dismay when I finally did.

Loved the reaction. This was a hidden gem for me back in the day. I saw this before the Matrix. Speaking of , any chance you guys might finish the trilogy?

Roddrick Smith

Speculating what happened post movie. In the movie, the doctor says they were taken and he was shown to be an adult when he erased his own memory, so they can't be too far from where they were taken from. I think that John explored and learned more about the ship, including navigation and navigated the ship back. Although, hopefully they were taken from a planet rather than a ship

Yeah, I've never seen this cut before (heard about it, but since I'd already seen the theatrical version I never bothered seeking it out). George is right: explaining everything at the beginning, then showing it, completely ruins the pacing. And as a result, reviews all said it had great atmosphere but the plot was boring, so it did poorly in theaters, so George never heard about it until now.

A shoutout! Cool.

The editing perfectly reflects Murdoch's state of mind. In the beginning he's a blank slate, confused and knows nothing. He emerges naked from the water like a newborn. The editing is erratic and choppy like we're struggling to make sense of what we're seeing. As he learns more the editing becomes more conventional like we're starting to figure some things out.

That’s an interesting one

movies are planned and made more than a year before they are finished, no way this was a big influence for the Matrix, also in literature there have been things like this for 100%

I think you watched the right version, there is another one that spoils a lot of the movie at the start with a expositional text ;) watched the movie 10 years ago for the first time and its sadly still so unknown

I always wondered how much influence this movie had over The Matrix. It came out a year before and story wise there are quite a few similarities. John Murdoch is Neo, The Aliens are the machines. Both protagonists have almost godlike powers. Thoughts??

If you want to see your name in film check out "S1m0ne". You're the star! You're not alone in completely missing this movie, it was a dud when it came out and only became a cult classic afterwards (The Director Cut in 2008 really helped). There's a lot of thematic and even some stylistic overlap with "The Matrix", which came out a year later. Whether The Matrix copied this film, or if they instead just both drew from the same sources, is an ongoing debate amongst fans of each.
