I (George) initially clicked through the episode to do a quick check and thought "oh its an old tv show, makes sense it looks like this" and thought nothing more. But going forward we will be doing the HD Remastered versions instead.

Star Trek TNG: 101-103

Comments

Imagine if Covid got us all drunk like in the Naked Now, humanity would be doomed lol

ImpishMisconception

Austrian (Europe) here, i subscribed for this show specifically.

Lord Joe

I subscribed for this show specifically. It's just that damn good.

Guts

After joining today to watch your Superman reaction (which was very enjoyable), I'm glad to have the opportunity to watch you two go on this journey. I do have one question, and maybe this changes in later Patreon videos that include your copy, but did you have to slightly pitch shift the episodes as part of avoiding copyright on YouTube?

bytefyre

My dad had lunch on a roof of a house, with Michael Dorn. Wharf, from Star Trek TNG. My dad was weak with hepatitis type C. He fell on the roof and Wharf saved him.

Jay Perry

Michael Dorn saved my dad from falling off a roof.

Jay Perry

I joined your Patron just for the Star Trek TNG

Paul Waller

I prefer the OG version of TNG. The HD ones aren't as nostalgic, but i guess for first viewing it is the best entry.

Mushie Motion

To give you a little more specifics, without reading all the comments, there's roughly 70-80 years time difference between TOS and TNG, not a couple of hundred. Also, you might be familiar with LeVar Burton as he was previously the host of a show called 'Reading Rainbow' and he was also famously in the movie/mini-series 'Roots'. Also a fun fact, several Star Trek (and other sci-fi) actors guest starred on the show 'The Big Bang Theory', some several times, with the most recurring being Wil Wheaton, who was damn near a regular by the end of the show's 12th season.

Basilisk

After Simone's comments about Sir Patrick Stewart, I have to ask... Has she ever heard the Christine Lavin song "Bald Headed Men"? I think she might find it.. right up her alley 😏

punterjoe

Oops yep you're right of course, apologies and thankyou for taking the time to explain.

Eddie lecornu

Hi Eddie, in the description of every post there is a URL called "No Sync Required". Click on that link and you will get what you're looking for. This information was also given to you on the welcome note when you first joined.

George Simone

OK, I'm new to Patron and only joined for the TNG series. However I thought it'd be like the You Tube version where you'd actually see the show and the audio? Am I missing something or is this just how it is?

Eddie lecornu

When watching The Target Audience go through TNG, they were similar in that they did like Season 1 and 2 as they were watching it, but they later understand that 3+ is just a higher level of story and quality (most of the time). I'm assuming George will do that too.

William Willis

Looking forward to watching the show for the first time 🙂. Suggestion for a movie that as Patrick Stewart in it, Excalibur

simon brouillard

The original series takes place in the 23rd century, TNG takes place in the 24th. Not sure why people told you there was a 200 year gap. So Bones is still alive at the start of TNG. Season 1 and 2 are uneven, with some fan favorites and some that everyone thinks are better forgotten. As George said, he prefers quality to quantity and that will be an issue the uneveness of these seasons. People recommend Season 3 plus because TNG is incredibly consistent from that point on, so you'll get quality and quantity. Pretty sure George was thinking of Community, not Scrubs, with Troy freaking out about meeting LeVar Burton.

Robert Gendron

It's interesting to go back and read Ghost Ship, the first TNG novel, after watching the full series. The author only had access to the series bible and the scripts for the first few episodes, so the book reflects the original conception of the series before things got sanded down. The detail that sticks out is Riker being a major dick towards Data because he doesn't believe he's a just a machine, which is definitely present in Farpoint but quickly gets forgotten about in subsequent episodes. There's also a lot about how the VISOR causes Geordi pain, which rarely if ever gets mentioned after The Naked Now because the writers realized it didn't add anything to the character and his powers were too useful not to use all the damn time.

Sean O'Hara

Simone's Risa joke was gold. I will say no more.

Lionbarber

Marina Sirtis has a regular old London accent. Deanna's accent is an invention.

p0sthum4n

Oh yeah, but Turk on Scrubs had a similar episode with Billy "Lando Calrissian" Dee. I can see how you can mix those up if you're not a complete sitcom aficionado. But we can only hope the Star Trek/Star Wars fanbases forgive George. . .

Amelie W

George - I'm sure I'm not the first to tell you, but PLEASE stick with the show! Season 1 (and 2 to a certain extent) is okay... but the show really doesn't start to take off until seasons 3 and 4. I know it wouldn't be proper, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if you guys even skipped seasons 1 and 2... but of course that's not feasible. Anyway, thank you both for exploring the Star Trek universe!

Ben Schwartz

I sympathize (first season gets harder each rewatch for me), but there’s a few killer episodes in the second season. Plus, you really NEED the setup before DS9 for the overall Star Trek universe of that era, and particularly the introduction of at least a couple key alien races beforehand.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

As an adult bald guy now, I’m embarrassed to admit that childhood me automatically associated bald as being old. And I don’t mean “Everyone over 30 is old to me” old, but within a decade of retiring age at best old. 🤦‍♂️ There were actors in their early 30’s I stupidly thought were older then people 2 decades their senior. I’m sure karma gets a laugh about my head having a follicle deficiency now. 🙄

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

I kinda like “Patron’s, ready your videos…and…ENGAGE!” 😁🖖

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

Also, the first five episodes of DS9 aired between TNG episodes 6x11 and 6x12 (there was a Christmas break for TNG that year that lasted through most of January). Afterwards, both shows put out one episode a week for awhile.

John Smith

"2. We know there are 2 more TOS movies, we will watch them in between 3-4 and 4-5 as they were released, it will be a nice break between seasons of TNG." - FYI, Star Trek V released in theaters in June 1989 (near the end of season 2), and Star Trek VI released in December 1991 (after season 5, episode 9)

John Smith

Umm, spoilers?

John Smith

I would hope that we could get TNG twice a week or else this will drag out a couple years ... ok 59 weeks but who's counting right?

Lazy Boy Stays Up Late Watching Video Tapes

@12:12 Lieutenant Worf's forehead is so big, he could smoke a cigarette in the rain!

Mike Kay

I am so stoked. I love TNG. I love Picard just a little bit more than Sisko, but I can't WAIT for you to get to DS9! (I'll just assume that's where you're going :) ) Edit: Nvm, you just mentioned it! So much great content to come

Thall

there are dozens of videos on youtube that just have the ambient noise of various parts of various Trek ships to sleep to

SnabbKassa

I've always loved hearing the ship's low ambient rumble. It's very relaxing.

Lazy Boy Stays Up Late Watching Video Tapes

Yes George, Data is similarly used to present the human relational themes that Spock represented, but he makes a name for himself and has quite the story line in his own right.

Lazy Boy Stays Up Late Watching Video Tapes

LeVar Burton was the subject of a Community episode where Troy freaked out and, he was also present in the episode when Doland Glover left the show. He was also the host of Reading Rainbow on American PBS and Kunta Kinte in the show Roots aired on American channel ABC.

EvertheHumanist

Q is kinda annoying in the early seasons, but in a kind of trickster way. I do think Q gets better later on, with some Q episodes like "Q Who", "Tapestry", and "All Good Things..." being some of the best in the series. My general feeling with Q is that he was like the teacher you hated because he always pushed you, but it turned out it was because he knew you could do so much better.

Jeb Manning

These were a lot more fun than I remembered. Love it.

Jpsynergy

Hello i joined just to watch your star trek reactions in full I love your guys reactions and they have brought me much laughter. Thanks for starting this channel and of course extended edition is the only edition.

charles markovetz

Also, about the HD remasters, you'll be able to read a lot of output text on the computer consoles. Sometimes they are legitimately funny, because the person who created the text knew that 480i tvs didn't have the resolution to legibly display what was going to be onscreen.

Jomero

As I was obsessed enough to look it up: according to Memory Alpha, Encounter at Farpoint takes place from Stardate 41153.7 to Stardate 41174.2, which is 26th February to 4th March 2364. The last episode of TOS, Turnabout Intruder, was Stardate 5928.5 to Stardate 5930.3, which corresponds to 2269 (the stardate system wasn't consistent for TOS and I haven't found a reliable conversion). So there was a 95 year gap between the series.

Adam Morgan

How did you even find the old versions?

John Rose

To answer your questions as to why there's families and children on the ship, that's a legacy of a concept for the series that they dropped relatively early in production: Originally, the plot was going to be that the Enterprise-D was going out to really EXPLORE. It would be beyond the edge of the Federation, and not plan on returning. That's why the opening narration is "continuing mission" instead of "5 year mission" like the original series. Since crew members never planned to return home, full families were brought along to be able to live out their lives together. The children would be trained to run the ship themselves to take over as they aged. That's also why they introduced the Holodeck, which for its first few appearances primarily did landscapes. So that people growing up on a ship could still experience the outdoors and visit "home". I don't know why the "beyond the frontier" concept was dropped, but it was jettisoned before they began regular production. Despite abandoning that concept, the families were kept to try and lend credence to the "This isn't a military ship, humanity has grown beyond that" philosophy that Gene wanted to emphasize.

JBK405

though i will say i grew up when these where being made on tv and people usually like stuff more from their childhood, so pardon the pun, guess that treks :-P

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

I my self love watch STNG, like deep space nine and most of voyager. but the other series never really hit me. ive seen the complete series for STNG 3-4 times fully, deep space nine 2-3 times fully, voyager 1 time fully with 2 other times 70% watched. I very excited for this :-)

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

i feel like "The excitement and anticipation on Simones face" matched my own. i was so excited to see this week not only begin star trek Next generation, but also had chronicles of riddick :-) .

fwfwfwfwf wfwfw

I think so. I tried to watch along with the version on paramount+, and theirs was faster. Had to pause to let mine catch up alot. Eventually switched to the uncovered version.

droodly

Is this a PAL copy? Everyone's voice (especially Picard) sounds pitched a hair higher than normal. Maybe it's just me.

StonyD

George, here is your compliment of the day: Well done digesting some shaky Star Trek. TNG S1 and S2 is not the worst Trek ever made, but it's a slog at times. I hope the character building will help balance out the lack of production or plots during these lean times. Because I assure you, you will be rewarded starting around S3 (imo).

StonyD

The excitement and anticipation on Simones face is a joy to behold. For me this is peak trek, once beyond first season or so( a few episode definetly dont hold up or were slightly iffy even at the time). So many good episodes to look forward to. George, never be afraid of asking your questions about the ship and timelines 😁. The Enterprise has up till this point been considered the flagship of Star Fleet and each version became a legend in their own ways. We do need to remember about no spoilers in the comments because of the many thing to come in this series.

Dazzler & Em

Best part of the show! Lol ;)

Brent bmc_comix

Yay! I strongly believe George should adopt "Patreons press play on my mark, 3, 2, 1, mark"

Tall Paul

"It's more like watching it how we remember it looking back in the 80s/90s." !!! Well put.

Happy Hanukkah

I would have preferred that franchise, but I am a mere pebble.

Happy Hanukkah

That McCoy cameo reaction needs to be a YouTube short ASAP

Paul McBryde

Because it hasn't really been gone over, this is the era we can call The Decline of Gene. The franchise is turning into a second chance at lightning in a bottle but Gene, whose health and personal life are both declining badly, has demanded full creative control over his new series and he's both out of ideas and the ones he has are bad, with the possible exception of Q, who was only included to stretch Farpoint's runtime and who he considered a "throwaway character." With his bulldog of a lawyer he's reusing old TOS ideas while destroying his friendships with virtually everyone he brought to TNG from TOS, including David Gerrold, DC Fontana and Bob Justman, things went out of control with his constant (sometimes illegal) script rewrites and he'll eventually be sidelined. Sadly for Gene's legacy, as soon as that happens, the show begins a steady and profound improvement...but you'll see all that in time.

JD Nevesytrof

The 'telepath' in Team America was making fun of Troi, I'm pretty sure ("I'm sensing you're confused!"). Marina Sirtis is actually British with a London(?) accent, though she's been in LA so long now it's become a weird cockney/valley girl hybrid.

Odd Thomas

Data is, in fact, a Spock-like character but their motivations are the opposite of one another. I don't want to ruin Data's character progression for George so I'll leave it at that for now.

JayF

S1 is for sure the stinkiest of stanks! 🤣 S2 slight improvement but still quite stinky, I guess we'll have to wait a few months for them to get to S3, OMG cant wait till they get to 'best of both worlds' haven't watched that in forever

Khan1001

Voyager too! Its such a shame that paramount haven't remastered DS9 or Voyager like they did with TNG, DS9 definitely deserves a remaster

Khan1001

Honestly it's great you guys did the old terrible SD quality version we had to live with all these years first, so you can appreciate just how great the remaster looks from now on.

JD Nevesytrof

One step closer to DS9. I can wait.

Mega Reacts

Would be my preference as well, but I'll take what I can get

Michael M.

As a bald guy the same age as Sir Patrick Stewart was in the 1st episode glad to hear someone can still be called attritive lol I did watch this show when it was airing on TV and this is my first re-watch. Very excited for this.

Da Big Appa

Beardless Ryker? I was shocked. My mind must have purged that image.

Grandalf

Seth McFarlane is a TNG fan, and he's done several Family Guy episodes using the TNG actors to voice their characters. Now, that George knows who the characters are, it might be fun to check those out, e.g., https://youtu.be/s_BX8UjVUvA?si=89fV-v-cx-LJCqN1

Simon Pegged Me

Kinda wild you don’t remember the episode where a half-naked Sulu chases people around with a sword.

Matthew Abbott

Liked this comment because of Voyager love. My favorite, too. There's tens of us.

Jonas Buckner

It makes me so happy that you're enjoying this George! It makes me feel even more happy that you ALREADY like Picard more than Kirk. :) This is my favorite second favorite series of the lot, only to Voyager. Stoked as hell that we're all watching this! :D hahaha, love it! Oh and don't feel bad about these not being HD. It's a classic show and it feels nice seeing them as they were first created (for the opening episodes at least).

Logan Kerlee

At the time, I think they really just wanted to cement their attachment to the old stuff. You're right, but in terms of "choices", season one isn't exactly and honor roll.

Robert Cooper

Data...Lore, perhaps?

REDR58

In a related note, there are often times when a real naval vessel with a certain name is retired, then a new ship can be given that name. In the US Navy, for example, there have been 7 US Navy ships with the "Enterprise" and with the retirement of the most recent one in 2017, an aircraft carrier, the name will again be used for a new aircraft carrier than is currently being built.

REDR58

So I didn’t realize this when they changed it to “no one”, it had an unfortunate declaration that no species had been, which doesn’t make sense (someone else explained to me). But like Simone says the better meaning on the change works. Naked Now: no it would happen quickly if there is atmosphere and moisture the temperature would drop quickly without heat. 4/3 television they have to be so close 🤗. Such a silly episode forgotten the Tasha Data affair happened in this early episode . Will they won’t they Picard and Crusher - this is where it stated. Ha Riker telling Data “Correct Order” seems like talking to an AI agent. Marty Sue strikes

SpankTheMonk

So much excitement and pride in Simon's expression! To answer George's question on this Galaxy-class ship called Enterprise, it has the registry NCC-1701-D or Enterprise-D. The original TOS TV series's ship has regsitry NCC-1701. The first movie Star Trek I: The Motion Picture" is a refit, or called Enterprise-Refit. The ship at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home has registry NCC-1701-A, or short for Enterprise-A. As you can deduce, there are other alphabets available.

TechJJ

Yes that is Cary-Hiroyuki as the Bailiff! And if you’re not careful you will get Mortal Kombat and your soul swallowed! 🤺. Paramount Plus Canada subscription can be written off so the episodes are what most people have. I didn’t realize Bones cameo was in the pilot! I can’t believe they thought cannibalism Ferenghi was a good idea. If internet/cell phone/social addiction is bad- wow a holographic addiction would be ☠️. Betty Jo Trimble is still alive at 91, thank you for saving Star Trek 🖖. And of course Lucille Ball 🪦❤️

SpankTheMonk

Thanks for these deets 🖖

SpankTheMonk

Make it so!

SpankTheMonk

Yeah the idea in the future is that baldness, ageism (Dammit Wesley! And that Marty Sue aside 😅) , and things of that ilk are far behind within Starfleet and eventually it is more about situational difficulties and some of the deeper human frailties and interpersonal issues that we identify. We saw glimpses in ToS. Love the LCARS interface designs by Michael Okuda. I caught that music reference Simone! ✊⬇️🧍⬆️. To the 🍺 end! George wants Lore 😉🤫

SpankTheMonk

Also I just noticed this, George has been reacting to top tier television of the 2000s and beyond where a limited number of episodes. So the premiere episode pilot is not like it was. And they work out the season arc of the first season in a tight way.

SpankTheMonk

To George's point about Patrick Stewart saying he phoned it in early on and George not seeing it, that his acting is great even in the pilot... I totally agree, he commits to even the silliest stupidest stuff the writers can come up with with complete conviction and gravitas and emotional resonance. And then when the writing does actually give him incredible material... holy crap just wait.

dys

Also royally confused about the break since Final Frontier was released before Season 3 of TNG in Canada. So maybe the notes above are off? Undiscovered country a bit harder since it was released into the first few episodes of season 5. Either way is cool thanks for the information. Let’s see what’s out there 🖖

SpankTheMonk

Star Trek the Next Generation Day! Maybe the truest version and culmination of the ideas of Star Trek mythos and its approach to its Sci-fi story telling. 🖖. Also Simone’s Star Trek fit and flare today is 🔥. Q is actually brilliant exposition for setting up the TV cannon of the universe in his first intro. Attitude and powers, the Squire. Men in short skirts in first season was fun 😺

SpankTheMonk

Soooo...I want to suggest a movie, but doing so might be spoiler,y. So, since I think it's best to go through a great filmmaker's work chronologically, I'll just say it's time you watched Us (2019)

sarCC

I.... kind of wish we could skip ahead to season 3 😅 Although my preferred option would be to head straight to DS9, as it's my favourite trek, but that's asking a bit much 😁

Mike FromOz

Yay! It's finally here! TNG day!!! I have wondered about that "hem hem hem hem hem" Picard did in Beverly's face for all of my adult life 😆

Gary Fixler

I know it is the wrong franchise but the phrase that comes to mind for this video is "And so it begins. "

Dave Hampton

It’s going to be interesting seeing S&G’s comparisons with TOS and TNG after seeing them essentially back to back. TOS is rather a bit more militaristic, Enterprise looks more like a 1960’s naval vessel (especially inside) while TNG’s Enterprise has vast amounts of living space and seems like a cruise ship in space that happens to have a powerful weapons system. That’s just one small thing. You’re going to see much bigger examples of how Picard’s leadership style is quite distinct from Kirk’s and even how Starfleet operates differently overall.

REDR58

With the ability to generate high quality synthesized voices from real people now, and the amount of training material, I keep hoping someone will do a licensed Majel-as-TNG-computer voice.

Angzarr

It's really happening; this feels surreal. And sounds like Voyager eventually too? Incredible.

Jofus

I used to hate Wednesdays lol. LeVar Burton! Sure the other 80s kids remember him from Reading Rainbow, but who remembers using your sister's hair clips as a visor? I swear they must have just painted a hair clip for Jordi's visor. And you actually can kind of see through them. Here's a cameo only the og stoners would catch, the woman who introduces Riker to the Holodeck was Oh Donna! From Cheech and Chong's Next Movie and Nice Dreams, and she was married to Pat Morita, Mr. Miyagi. Paul Rubens was in both those C&C movies too. I'm so psyched for this, it is a long voyage ahead but so worth it! And I think, I hate to say but, the TNG cast is really family like in a unique way. This is gonna be fun.

MacGuffinStuff

You mentioned the remaining TOS movies, and I guess you’ll be watching the TNG movies when they come up in the timeline? First Contact was my “first contact” with Star Trek and it holds a special place in my heart.

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

There's probably an argument to experience the original version first, but the remaster is done so well it's strictly an upgrade. It's more like watching it how we remember it looking back in the 80s/90s. The Tsiolkovsky is named after Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, who invented like half of all rocket science 50 years before Sputnik.

dys

I am so excited! Even if the first season of TNG is the stinkiest of stanks. There's a couple... I wouldn't call them "gems" per se.. in there. But overall.... ugh. It does get better. In season 2? Slightly. 3? Yes. There's a reason why there's a tv trope called "Growing the Beard" (the opposite of "jumping the shark") and it's from this series.

Jomero

OMG WE ARE FINALLY HERE! YAAAAAAAAY! Yes, it would be a crime to not watch this in all its beautifully remastered High Definition glory! Cant wait for you guys to get to S3 on wards! Also, if TNG doesn't make George an official Trekkie, nothing will!

Khan1001

Officially, TNG takes place 78 years after TOS. Also, when people say seasons 1 and 2 aren't great, they are comparing them to later seasons. This means it gets better. A lot better.

Kevin Knadle

TOS! :)

Brent bmc_comix

Now I don't have to convince my husband to watch TNG with me - I can live vicariously through Simone! (Seriously though, this is a delight.)

Katrine Myra

And now the moment I have all been waiting for!

s0rd3z

♫ Butterfly in the skyyy ♫ I suspect George recognized him from his appearance on Community.

droodly

The really early Who (in the 60s) had a lot of episodes. They cut down quite a bit in the Pertwee days. I don't think it was ever quite as many as US shows though.

Amos T Fairchild

Doctor Who at least the "reboot" from 2005 has not a lot of episodes per season, around 12-15 so pretty much half of the amount of episodes of Star Trek^^

overdev

I reckon you guys would be able to handle Doctor Who if you broke it up into Doctor tenures, like on a poll you’ll say Doctor who (2005-2010) for the David tenannt era then so on and so forth for later doctors, just an idea anything to get my favourite show on here one day

PeppermintWizardOfAus

The Naked Now was NOT a good choice for the first regular episode. You shouldn't have everyone acting out of character when you barely know who they are. Even the series doesn't know who they are very much!

Joe Concepts

George, watch for this being an ensemble show, as opposed to Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and then supporting characters. Every character gets screen time and development. Which is more in keeping with later TV versus older stuff that tends to focus on "stars."

Joe Concepts

The first couple of seasons of TNG are not terrible, but there are some growing pains. The fact that Enterprise has a counsellor/therapist on board was mocked quite a lot for a couple of decades in the fandom. It was seen as an 80s fad. Certainly, watching TNG in 2025, that view should be revised.

Opti_Frog

Speaking as a sci-fi nerd who loves Star Trek, Star Wars, pretty much anything sci-fi/fantasy, I've come to realize that sci-fi/fantasy fans can be overly dramatic. Season 1 is by no means terrible. It was the 1st season, actors were getting used to their characters, they were working out how things would work, etc. They were just trying to find their footing.

Ron K

Re: George's inquiry about a "Spock" character in most ways, there both is and isn't an equivalent here. There's not a direct analog, but there are some analyses of TOS that view Spock, Kirk, and Bones as a sort of "trinity" representing the Super Ego, Ego, and Id of the human mind. In this series you have a new trinity of Picard, Riker, and Wesley representing the life stages of Elder, Adult, and Youth. Re: Data's "Class"- They're referring to Data's literal graduating class. He's considered an entity, not an object, and therefore had to go through the Starfleet Academy just like every other cadet. Re: TOS episode referenced in episode 3: Think Fencing Shirtless Sulu.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

sarCC

As you approach the end of the original crew’s run it would be fun to watch (rewatch?) the Futurama episode S04E11 Where No Fan Has Gone Before. It is a fun celebration of TOS.

Seth

Simone and George, forgive my repetition if this has already come up before, but LeVar Burton was the host of a very popular children's show about reading for 23 years called "Reading Rainbow" which was seen in the US on Public Television and ran from 1983–2006. And he was also in the VERY popular and well-regarded TV miniseries called "Roots" in 1977 in which he played "Kunta Kinte" a name still in the popular culture to this day, so many people knew him from those two shows long before TNG. Roots was watched by about 130-140 million people, more that half the population of the US at the time. It was a ratings juggernaut and a critical success. So TNG is just part of his well-regarded career. Reading Rainbow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P7Z1kYFKnE Roots intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSJUgws9M-E

REDR58

Since they mention it in the video, count me among those who joined the Patreon for TNG. Let's goooooooooo

JGoss

Just a thought that you may want to update your Patreon posts for Wrath of Khan as they do not have Star Trek in the title bar so they are not showing up in a generic ST search.

Ohmss

I feel like at this point (and maybe even continuing, I don't recall) Deanna Troi barely adds any more context than the score does. lol Obviously, the characters don't hear the score, so maybe it makes sense in universe, but for the audience it's a little silly. *tense music plays* Troi: "pain! such pain!" *joyful music swells* Troi: "I sense joy and gratitude, captain!"

Sarahnade

As a TOS fan at the time, a lot of TOS fans were pissed it didn't feature Kirk, Spock and McCoy and were yelling it wasn't real Star Trek without them. I don't recall anyone expecting it to be a continuation of old Trek, that it wasn't ever going to be season 4 was the problem for a lot of fans and many refused to even watch. I loved TNG as soon as it was available on VHS in the UK, and it got better when they stopped trying to be TOS 2.0.

Lincynity

TOS takes place around 2260ies, TNG season 1 was 2364 ... so basicly around 100 years, which would make Bones around 35 to 40 in TOS

Sven Ketelhut

Can't wait for the ordeals that are "Justice" & "Code Of Honour"

Tim Boxall

I've not sat down & watched full episodes of TNG since I was a kid (the bigger budget movies kind of overshadowed the series for me - but maybe this rewatch will change that)

Odd Thomas

Star Trek IV takes place in 2286. Encounter at Farpoint takes place in 2364.

JD Nevesytrof

I'm sure someone has already pointed this out. It's most definitely not 200 years between TOS and TNG. It's closer to a hundred years.

Ron K

Is it the one with a certain blonde? Yiiiikes.

Donna Castellano

Theres also a great comic crossover with Doctor Who. The Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond meet up with the TNG crew because the Cybermen and the Borg are joining forces.

Donna Castellano

thats nuts that none of the other movies or tv shows they do interest you at all? theres something new every day and you have zero interest with ALL of them? :o

robodong

I love you guys, but not a big TNG/DS9 fan. I may unsub for a while. There are people doing Babylon 5 after all. lol. I'll rotate back for the films and stuff.

Amos T Fairchild

then just watch the other version with the unblurred footage?

Ph4ZeD

One of the greatest science fiction series of all time. It's just not apparent from the first two seasons.

SJB

From memory, TOS takes place in the 2260s and TNG takes place in the 2360s

The Real Andrew Kim

Let's go! TNG and DS9 are brilliant. Voyager is pretty good too.

Alexander C Chalk

You could do Farscape between TNG seasons and Babylon 5 between DS9 seasons. Stargate could come between Voy/Ent/Disco/LD/SNW. That way you'll cover nearly all the big names in SciFi TV.

Theo Bracco

While I can't speak to Levar Burton's experience with the visor on set, I do remember having some of those 'shutter' sunglasses from the 80s that you couldn't figure out how someone could see through. I assume they work on the same principle, where there is enough of an image coming through the slits that your mind fills in the rest. You can see decently enough (from what I remember, I was like 6-8 years old when I wore them).

SuPaTiLt

But he's a Vulcan

Cory Garron

There's an X-men comic where they meet the TNG crew, and everybody remarks on the fact that Picard looks just like Xavier. This was about a decade before Sir Patrick was cast as Xavier.

A Red Mage Named Blue

Q is SUCH a fun Character. he is an Omniscience Dick....LOL

DasBigUn

TIL. RIP.

Happy Hanukkah

You want a truly terrible episode...? Just wait.

Joe Stacey

All I can say is , YAY!

ChiefKC

Will there be an edited down youtube version? Cannot for the life of me get a proper sync going.

MrGustavevil

Simone's excitement was so unbelievably wholesome, we are so blessed to have her!

Ph4ZeD

Are you going to watch three episodes each week or was this a one off because the first two is one story?

Monica Alarcon

Unless there was a LeVar Burton heavy episode of Scrubs I forgot, I think what you were thinking of, George, was there was an episode of Community where LeVar Burton shows up via Troy being a big fan. "YOU CAN'T DISAPPOINT A PICTURE!!!" LOL

akaTheBARON

Actually Data did graduate from the academy just like all other officers.

Joe

We're a long ways away from that.

Kane Is Able

George said Paramount. So, I assume Paramount+.

Kane Is Able

There's many great episodes.

Kane Is Able

Please stop with spoilers. They'll discover characters when they get there.

Kane Is Able

Patrick Stewart's "Not now doctor!" delivery is one of my favourite moments of his.

TOS fans were so hyped up for TNG to be more like Season 4 of TOS. And it AIN'T! Kirk was always presented with a godlike/impossible power to overcome and he used clever guile or what-have-you to solve it. The TOS people see "Encounter at Farpoint" and the first thing Picard does is SURRENDER. This angered the sad little TOS people. But it is obvious. It is clear. It is INarguable: Picard is 9,126,477.3 TIMES more AWESOME than Kirk could ever hope to be. Done.

W_E_Ray (Dungeons-Dragons Grognard since '81)

Roddenberry's vision (in addition to Theme) was for one leading man and the two opposite advisors behind him -- like TOS-- Kirk with the Spock angel over one shoulder and the McCoy angel over the other shoulder. The new producers wanted Picard as just separate from the rest of the ensemble and the bridge officers to be developed as typical TV-ensemble cast. Meanwhile, the actors were still very new to their characters and of course, so were the writers. This was problematic in the first two seasons. But it all comes together beautifully in Season 3 when Roddenberry effectively steps down, the new producers have effectively full control, and the actors really know their characters.

W_E_Ray (Dungeons-Dragons Grognard since '81)

Season 1 & 2 still have the creative wrestling/conflict between Gene Roddenberry and the new Producers: TNG gets REALLY good when Roddenberry is pretty much gone and the new producers get to push the show's creative direction where they want instead of Roddenberry. (And Season 2 also had the Writers'-Strike.)

W_E_Ray (Dungeons-Dragons Grognard since '81)

George: "I need Lore". Just wait. That's on episode 12...

Monica Alarcon

I think it's a misconception that season one is "terrible." It's not. There are many good episodes, but they are inconsistent, and so are the characters. The writers haven't had time to work in (or find) the style and feel of the show, and the actors haven't settled into their roles yet. Unlike modern TV/streaming shows where they shoot a whole season (or two) at a time, then spend a year to do the sfx and edit, ST-TNG (and other shows from the '80s) was shot and produced weekly. The episodes were literally aired the week after they were shot. 26 episodes, 26 weeks of hard work and long days (and sleepless nights for the sfx team.) It's quite an achievement.

HansD

I think there’s a fair number of decent to good episodes in season two.

REDR58

The ITunes version doesn’t sync up at all

Gootz

Beginning of February next year

Stephen Morris

And he hijacked a warship together with Tommy Lee Jones!

olly.enn

Any chance you can let us know how you are watching the eps? ITunes, Netflix. There are some different versions floating around. Just want to sync up

Gootz

It's gonna take maybe a season and a half until all the characters' personalities gel and drift to how everyone remembers but you'll enjoy the development!

JD Nevesytrof

Like everyone else, I am really excited to see George’s thoughts on his first watch. I’m also wanting to see what Simone thinks on her revisit of one of my favorite series of all time!

PIG

The way they re-did the effects for the remaster is great! Not trying to make everything look like current CGI but copy the old charme and visual qualities (except the planets, but I'm fine with them updating those to "current standards"). Yep, it's a great remaster!

olly.enn

I'm so excited for this, yay!! Also, I know it's divisive, but I hope they will watch Enterprise once they get there too. It's really good, but in a different way than the rest of Star Trek, so I get why it gets the flak.

Nicholas Vreugdenhil

Nope, TOS forever!!!!

Brent bmc_comix

the HD Remaster is GORGEOUS. Star Trek actually did GREAT work remastering TOS and Next Generation. Some truly incredible work. Restrained and fits the time. Unlike… you know… Star Wars…

djKENTO

Just understand.... Every season is better than the one before it.... Except, in my opinion, for Season 7, which slips back a little. But it's still good. By the time you get to Season 3.... everything from Seasons 1 and 2 will dissolve from memory. It did for me, and many other people, I think. I'm here for your ENTIRE journey.

Tom Occhipinti

Encounter at Farpoint takes place in 2364. The events of Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and Voyage Home take place in 2285. So what you’re watching here takes place 79 years after what you last watched.

Matthew Abbott

Im so happy that we are out of TOS land. TNG has some rough spots in the first season but after that its possibly the best sci-fi show ever made.

David N

It's awesome that Simone has her Star Trek com-badge on! Now we just need to convince her to get a Troi uniform or a Starfleet Uniform to wear during filming. And George needs a Klingon headpiece. He's already got the hair.

Mastervodo

I am thinking 2027! Something to look forward to!

Mastervodo

I was looking forward to George's reaction to a certian character showing up, but was also surprised by Simone's reaction because I forgot that, while she would have seen that before, would have had no context to who that was until now. So she was also seeing it for the first time in a way.

akaTheBARON

I'm very excited to get to DS9 and Voyager. My enjoyment of Star Trek increases exponentially as Gene Roddenberry's influence wanes. I 100% prefer them in reverse order, with Voyager being my favorite, followed by DS9, TNG, and TOS. In that order.

Chase Lonnergan

Dude, they'd never be able to finish that show with what...how many seasons of it? lol. It's like someone watching Greys Anatomy. That show just doesnt wanna end. Lol

Jacob Colson

"He leans on his crew more thank Kirk" So, it's so far in the future, I don't consider it a spoiler... In the first episode of SNW, Captain Pike's security officer says to do something and he immediately does it. It's SO FUNNY because ALL of 90's Trek is littered with captains telling the security officer to STFU.

Robert Cooper

Y'all need to watch Doctor Who

Sokath His Eyes Uncovered

TOS was around 2266 A.D. and TNG was around 2364 A.D. So about 100 years later.

temsik28

I'm so happy about this ❤️

Michael Bauer

I've been javing mixed feelings about this moment. On one hand I am very excited that we have reached the TNG series. I am hopeful that 3-episodes a week will accelerate the process (three shows with 7 seasons each would take a long time to get through at only 2 episodes a week) Just doing 2 episodes would mean we'dl have to muddle through about three months of hit or miss episodes just to get through this worst season of TNG (not that there aren't some good episodes along the way). Unfortunately, the first season episodes that tend to be the most boring are the ones that have the most significance for future seasons, and the pilot 2-part episode was about as mediocre as they come. Neither the actors nor the writers really knew the characters at this point. By the end of the first season they will have found them, but some of what we have to slog through to get there will be painful at times. TNG is about 78 years after TOS (and 67 years after ST 6: The Undiscovered Country). Maybe you are thinking of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes being 200-300 years after the Ceasar trilogy (Rise/Dawn/War). The Remastered HD versions are nice. That won't change the aspect ratio, sadly, but the improved quality and enhanced graphics/effects are nice.

D. T. Nelson

Data said "Class of" in response to Riker asking if his rank was honourary because he attended Starfleet Academy and graduated. He went through the whole process to qualify.

Lincynity

Roddenberry really wanted that on-again/off-again will they/won't they dynamic in his show. The Riker/Troi setup in the pilot is a direct pull from Decker/Ilia from ST:TMP (via Phase II). Not sure why that was so important for him, but it is what it is.

Scott McClintock

No spoilers, but I'd say there's one episode in particular in season 2 that's a contender for the best of the series even.

Matthew Riley

TNG! Unlike Worf, I 'AM' a merry man! Over this at least. Squeeeeeeee!

Mastervodo

Were you planning on doing 3 episodes every week? It would definitely speed up the watch-through, what with 7 seasons of 26 episodes and all. Apologies if you said this at the end and I was too impatient to wait...

dc

I love Star Trek: TNG as I was a young teenager when this was on TV and I watched it every week as it aired and because of that reason I will always love TNG but my favorite shows of older Trek is Voyager and DS9, I know there are many people who did not like Voyager as much as the other shows but I loved it and can't wait for you guys to get to that show but DS9 is my second favorite of the older Trek shows but even though I like Star Trek Enterprise the least of this Era of Star Trek I still really liked that show also but in my opinion Voyager and DS9 is quite a bit better

Eric Traylor

I’m physically aroused!

Simone's Coconut Squire

Unfortunately, the same was not done for DS9 and likely never will be.

REDR58

im surprise Simone didnt tell him... like does he just prepare everything and she just sits down watch and thats all the work shes does?

robodong

TNG definitely takes a season or so to find its feet. Season 3 is really where it reaches full strength, but there are some great episodes in Season 2, and some gems in Season 1. I almost forgot how prickly Picard is in Season 1. By the way, TNG is about 80 years after TOS.

dc

?

robodong

YESSSSS! IT IS TIME!!!

Gryff

Is it just me or is the video about 10% too fast?

Ron

its new to only Simone so it never even came close to winning the one or two polls it appeared in. and my guess is Simone doesnt really care about history since.. you know.. in every video that remotely has any historical references in it, she looks confused and says "i dont know anything".

robodong

Is george saying "we should watch rome" in every couple of posts, some sort of bit? Is he hostage and he keeps asking for help maybe?

Vlasios Vougiouklis

Yeah, glad you've been made aware of the HD versions. It's a huuuuuge stepup.

Patrick

1 and 2 aren't nearly as bad as I remember as a kid. I've done this rewatch with a couple of different other channels and i've definitely enjoyed the earlier stuff more as an adult and (heavily)seasoned Trekky.

Patrick

Hmm...I almost get secondhand embarrassment with some of the pitchy acting in that first season. You'd never guess how strong the series would become by its prime seasons 3/4/5.

Cc Decc

So when it's time, I would check out two Star Trek books by Peter David (who sadly just died a few weeks ago). Imzadi (1993), about the early years of Riker and Troy, and Vendetta (1991), which mostly focuses on Picard. I have read them many times over the years, and they hold up. Peter David wrote many books in the TNG universe, but those were my favorites. Don't read these now, they contain spoilers for the series.

JediLounger

Woot! And yes, George - everyone agrees season one is their weakest by far, but in fairness - they were still new to the characters both the actors and the writers. As the series progressed, things improve *considerably* as everyone gets more comfy. TNG also breaks from TOS mold in that there will be not only recurring characters but also multi-episode plot threads and callbacks. Plenty of one-shots, but also lots of episodes that are in context with previous episodes and events. Roddenberry objected to doing that, but IMO the series is much better for doing that. Personally I'm looking forward to season two+ but we'll power through season one together. ;)

Tinfoilnation

Once again, thank you for doing Uncovered versions as an option to switch to. I thought I had the reaction on 1.5x speed by accident compared to the version I was watching on Netflix. I'm mystified at how syncing works sometimes, because the non-remastered version moved along significantly faster, to the point where it was several scenes ahead. How does... time... work? 😂

Brandon

I never noticed that Majel didn't do the computer voice in this episode.

Robert Cooper

Hell yeah finally :D it Takes a while until the Show geht's good, cant wait for deep Space 9 tho ;)

overdev

I'd say you could watch all of TNG first before going into DS9 and Voyager.

Christina Doxstader

One step closer to DS9 <3

Curaitis

I now wishing for a channel of just G&S watching William Riker watch Star Trek. Meta-level reacting.

dasgrove

First point. They didn't have families aboard in TOS, just Starfleet personnel (although they did have a wedding that got cancelled as the groom was a redshirt.) Second, Marina Sirtis is British, from London and has an estuary English accent. Her accent in early TNG was intended to sound exotic and alien. There's more to this, but.... spoilers! Edit: Plus Troi and Riker were very much a rework of Ilia and Decker carried over from the Star Trek Phase 2 planned series that evolved into The Motion Picture. Troi's accent may be associated with that.

Lincynity

engage.

ComradQuestion

Small correction George/Simone but Star Trek V was released during the end of the second season of TNG, and Star Trek VI was released at the very beginning of the fifth season

PeppermintWizardOfAus

If they watched all the modern series of Doctor who (from 2005-present) it would be just about the same length as watching all of TNG, maybe a few more sprinkled in. Cinebinge watching Doctor who would be the greatest thing ever and I’m certain they’d love it but it’s a bit of a commitment with Trek on top and everything else

PeppermintWizardOfAus

We all know there are some borderline unwatchable episodes but still some gems in the first seasons, but I already can’t wait for the Best of Both Worlds

Ph4ZeD

George is such a silly banana but also lovable

Ph4ZeD

Yes, George Colm Meany was the douchey cop in Con Air and a pilot for one of the planes destroyed in Die Hard 2.

Matt O'Keefe

That skips a lot of great and good episodes.

Kane Is Able

its a good thing S&G isnt a star trek only channel 🤷‍♂️and theres plenty of other good content on here. hell this star trek then was a bonus thing in the first place, there use to be nothing posted on wednesdays.

robodong

I have to be honest. I'm starting to get a little Star Treked out. Waited years for reactors to do TNG and now everyone is doing them. Oh well... Once more unto the breach

Kane Is Able

One of the best shows of all time! Hey George, you're in for a better visual experience watching the show now than we did watching the TNG episodes when they originally aired on TV from 1987-94. In the mid 2000s they went back to the original film negatives of each episode of all 7 seasons and not only completely cleaned up and remastered them ALL but amazingly they went and completely re-did a lot of the visual effects and the establishing "space shots" (ie: The Enterprise parked in front planets, etc). This was a massive undertaking and this new/enhanced version of TNG was released on DVD/Blu-ray in 2007 for the show's 20th Anniversary and this is the version everyone sees on streaming services. You can see comparisons of the original versions vs the remastered versions online and its phenomenal what they did. To actually go back to the celuloid film prints and take it from there. A rare and impressive task. Enjoy all! Press play! Engage! Make it so! ...and watch out for the Riker maneuver lol 😉📼🤘

"My mind is a blank slate." ~Simone, 2025

Kane Is Able

Yes Simone, George needs to know he has to wait a couple of seasons before it gets consistently good. Seasons 1 and 2 are hit and miss at best.

Matt O'Keefe

Make it so, Cinebingers

Bookwormy

Just to answer the Doctor Who question, it depends on whether you're talking about old Doctor Who (1963 to 1989) or new Doctor Who (2005 to present). Old Doctor Who episodes were mostly 30 minute serials which a single story told over 4-6 episodes, usually with a cliffhanger ending to each ep. To begin with I think they were broadcast live too. The first series back in 1963/64 had 42 episodes or something around that. New Doctor Who is more along the lines of US TV, with hour long episodes with their own self-contained stories (unless it's a 2 or 3 part special) but fewer episodes as the series got more and more expensive to make. It started off around 13 episodes a series and is now down to 8 I think. So if you think committing yourselves to watch 178 TNG episodes is bad... :D

Spacedone

I love that someone created a trope page for that. I just thought Before The Beard and After The Beard was a shared joke between my brother and myself.

Spacedone

Happy this has come about here for you both and Patrons - one of the best shows ever made by the time it’s done. 3 and 4 are my favourite seasons personally and this has possibly my favourite cast ever in a television series so it’ll be great to do a rewatch 👊😎

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Yes guys, you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD do Rome. :)

Big.Bad.Mr.Mustard

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GrowingTheBeard This trope is very true. The first season, while there are good episodes, has some rough patches. Only after Riker grows a beard from Season 2 on, the show really finds its footing.

fforw

Lol, If I sit down to watch TNG, I'm just starting at Season 3. For the record, all of these had a two hour pilot. Breaking them up into Part 1 and Part 2 is just for reruns. The two hour pilot was a studio insistence. The original script for this episode had none of the Q parts in it; it was just tacked on to pad out the runtime, but strangely created one of the signature characters. I honestly kinda hate these early season costumes. They just seem a bit too unstructured. I can't imagine how uncomfortable they must have been. The pants and tunics are much better than nylon jumpsuits.

Robert Cooper

Appropriate day to drop this. June 25 1987 was the final day of filming for the pilot episode. (Just happened to run across this for completely independent reasons) Yes, that was Colm Meany in Con Air (but it was John Cusack that stole his car) No, that's not Marina Sirtis' natural accent. She's British, of Greek parents, and she's described the accent she put on as "Eastern European." Picard had Riker conduct a manual docking with the saucer to help build the crew's confidence in him. TNG is set ~100 years after TNG, or ~80 years after the films. In fact, Picard's walk-thru of the engine room was specifically written into the pilot to justify construction of the set.

Ken Quick

OMG! OMG! OMG!

Cory Garron

I am so happy right now! I have been waiting for this ever since you started Star Trek. I really like this community

Robban6948

You are doing DS9, Nice!

Matt O'Keefe

Can't wait to watch this on my bathroombreaks....😂😂😂

TomGas2025

Ok, I've been waiting for this. I've only ever watched DS9, which I loved, and always wanted to actually sit down through TNG as I just know its characters and some story arcs through osmosis (and a couple of the movies) by having a bunch of Trekkie friends growing up.
