Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Comments

it took me a minute to understand George saying" this movie is going to give me diabetes" at first i though it meant it made want to eat sweets but then im like"oooooooh, he saying the the movie is so sweet" i like that saying. on a side note one of the hotel staff looks like professor McGonagall from harry potter :-)

Almost three months later, I must express my continued confusion at the thumbnail. Is that Simone or George?

Happy Hanukkah

If there was a U. S. S Cinebinge what color shirts would the 2 person crew be wearing?

ShoNuff3000

I wonder when you start TNG if you recognize some acotrs and actresses that started with a cameo there...

TomGas2025

You likely mean Probe, credited to Margaret Wander Bonanno (1992). Another related novel is Lost to Eternity, by Greg Cox, published last year.

I never understood why they beamed Kirk aboard after his dinner with Gillian. He was already in the park and they hardly had any power left. Why didn't he enter via the ramp? I understand the shock value of his disappearance and it still being daytime. But this is why they didn't have enough power to beam Chekov aboard, putting his life at risk. Surely Kirk could have waited around until it was safe to board via the ramp.

Odd and Even Star Trek movies. Meh, Good, Meh, Good, Meh, Good. Although idk why you're watching them in chronological order. TNG had no impact on 5 and 6, they just got released after TNG started because people still like TOS.

Kron0n

After Wrath of Khan this is my favorite ot the movies with the TOS cast.

Peter Dillard

The Cetacfean Institute isn't real, but it was shot at the real-life Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. It's a really great aquarium and they do a ton of scientific research and promote sustainable and humane fishing practices.

R. Chang

The Transporter is just a 23rd century version of a 3D printer; It scans you, creates a copy of you, and then kills (the original) you. So, no, I wouldn't use a Transporter. If it was based on Portal technology, I might be willing to give it a go. Based on some of Simone's comments it seems as though she's seen Hitch-hikers Guide. Hope we'll be seeing that reaction soon :)

Lachlan Caldwell

They saw.

Tom Occhipinti

This is the first content of TOS I ever saw. Of Star Trek. Such a classic.

Bookwormy

There is a novel that is a direct sequel to this film and it involves the TOS crew finding the origin of the probe. Unfortunately, for the life of me I can’t remember the name of it.

Zero Cochrane

I can’t describe how excited I am for my favorite reactors to get started on one of my favorite shows of all time (tng).

Gootz

This was the first Star Trek I saw at all (and one of the first movies I saw in theaters, period). I'd heard a lot about it, mainly from my Dad, so I was really confused and disappointed that the Enterprise wasn't even in it, at first. But I loved it anyway.

JoeNotCharles

"Gotta nuke something" With regards to how this movie is obviously a product of the '80s fascination with whales -- which also showed up behind-the-scenes in TNG -- I was reminded of something a few months ago: "Save the whales" WORKED. It's the biggest success story in conservation. Whale populations have rebounded throughout the world, and are continuing to improve. Despite how people often mock hippies and "bleeding hearts" and (now) SJWs and the Woke Hivemind about being obsessed, it shows that we do have the power to make CONCRETE improvement in the world around us. It's not hopeless. Environmental catastrophe is not inevitable. We can make things better, and we've DONE it. Plus you just gotta love this whole movie.

JBK405

Good night.

Happy Hanukkah

This was the first Star Trek I saw in theaters. So many good stretches of dialogue. Chekov’s international scene has me rolling every time.

Jason Pratt

Many of the early TNG episodes were either remakes of TOS episodes or they were unused story ideas from the planned Star Trek: Phase II series developed in the late-70s that evolved into The Motion Picture.

Michael Kemmet

Maybe I missed it, but did you notice that the ship they stole aboard to collect radiation was the USS Enterprise?

Pepijn Schmitz

“ Double dumb ass on you!”

Zero Cochrane

Three clips (pictures) from the Mad Magazine "spoof" of this movie: https://ibb.co/album/dB2T1N Not directly related to this movie: Sarah Brightman's version of Captain Nemo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOtkVo3oXjo

Happy Hanukkah

12:48 Yes, Kirk, we see what you did there. 12:55 I was waiting for this :-) Reminder: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/J1FotlezgCs 14:03 I am reminded of this clip, "The smartest Batman goon ever": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMd4S-LkywI 16:29: "The Kappamaki, a whaling research ship, was currently researching the question: How many whales can you catch in one week?" 20:19 Not only is this her only appearance in the movie, but according to IMDb, this is the only acting she ever did. Her real job (including in this movie) was hair stylist. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0220905/ 21:48 "Why all the koi disguises?" To get closer to the whales, duh. Ba-dum-tss! 23:52 Remind me what the whales' names are?

Happy Hanukkah

Agreed. Again :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCARADb9asE

Happy Hanukkah

This was the highest grossing Star Trek movie with the original cast. “Fish” out of water films were big in the 80’s.

Roddrick Smith

Absolutely NOT on the transporters. They kill you every time you use one by disassembling you and then assembling a copy of you with all of your memories. I don't wanna die just to get somewhere. Send me a shuttle or fuck off.

Chase Lonnergan

The lady who played Madeline won the role as part of a contest.

Ian Schrijvers

TNG early seasons could be really goofy. A lot of TOS writers wrote early TNG..

Matt O'Keefe

I do hope one thing you react to after this but before TNG is the music video for the song Star Trekkin'. Star Trekkin' is a novelty song by the British band the Firm. Star Trekkin' parodies the original Star Trek TV series and the TOS characters. The music video is complete chaos and hilarious insanity. It would make for such a weird but funny reaction.

Jeb Manning

George and Gracie are I believe a reference to old time movie comedy duo Georgd Burns and Gracie Allen.

Matt O'Keefe

Crazy plot indeed. But the humor is perfect, especially after the heaviness of ST III

danzthename

You two made me really explore the Star Trek "galaxy". Thank you!

Guillaume Huet_rennibou

Nick beat me to it.

jmundt33a

"That's an insane plot!" I couldn't help but giggle because we all said the exact same thing when this one came out.

Matthew Johnson

Let me tell you again, George and Simone, how pumped I am for this week of reactions. I'm gonna be all over that shit first thing in the morning tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. It's gonna rock!

Scott CineRam

it definitely was more comedic and much more light hearted. but imo it never reached full on comedy genre and remained Sci-Fi as the primary genre. this movie i think, to me anyways, reached Sci-Fi Comedy. like Galaxy Quest, Paul or Worlds End. not that it was a bad thing, just unexpected.

George Simone

I think the Trouble with Tribbles was a comedy episode.

Simon Pegged Me

Catherine Hicks was in Child's Play

Galactic Cannibl

Until Star Trek 2009 (the 11th movie), this was the highest grossing Star Trek movie and was widely considered to be the best of the series by general audiences that appreciated the comedy and lesser focus on “Star Trekiness”. I’ve know numerous non-Trek people for whom this was the only Star Trek movie they had seen until ST-09. Catherine Hicks also played the mom on the 90’s-00’s family drama 7th Heaven. The actor who played the dad on 7th Heaven, Stephen Collins, played Captain William Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (the captain who Kirk steals the command from and who merges with V’Ger/Ilia at the end).

Nick

"I think I've done enough conventions to know how to spell Melllvar"

Galactic Cannibl

but doesnt that apply to.. any film? lol. American Wedding deals with Communication, Drive deals with Life/Death, RRR deals with all 3.

robodong

If you noticed with these past couple of Star Trek films, there are some themes that go with them, Star Trek II deals with Death, Star Trek III deals with Life, and Star Trek IV deals with Communication

The Unknown Cinephile

NOOCLEAR WESSELS

dudewheresmycar

one of the silliest Star Trek movies. not that its not good, but its definitely, definitely the goofiest. full on comedy
