Just one major note here on the finale -- iMark isn't just choosing "Helly over Gemma" -- he's choosing to life over voluntary annihilation. And it's strongly implied -- to me -- that Gemma is safe enough now, that she can get out. Their floor has always been shown to be sparsely populated (whether or not there are whole marching bands elsewhere) because of the secrecy of the project. That's why no actual guards, etc. It's a cabal of a secret few who are involved and aware. So I do think the ending is pretty clearly implying that Innie Mark saves Gemma then refuses to leave with her, not just abandoning her halfway or something. To me it's implied she has a clear exit at this point.
Meanwhile, if he leaves with Gemma, his life at Lumon -- let's face it -- is over. What are the odds Innie Mark is going to be allowed consciousness again -- much less any kind of return to Lumon? Even if he hates Lumon, those are the only people he knows and loves.
Add to this the fact that we have spent the majority of our time with iMark, not oMark -- so for me, I'm more invested in iMark's journey and happiness. Not to mention the fact that innie Mark doesn't know Gemma so why would he choose for his alternate self to go with her over his own life?
He already at that point did a brave and selfless thing in getting Gemma out -- not just for Gemma/Miss Casey, but for Outie Mark too.
So for me, it is more than understandable that Mark turns back to the remains of his life instead of allowing his life to end if he goes with Gemma -- and it would. It makes sense to me that he's choosing woman he knows and loves over ending his life so Outie Mark and Gemma can be together. He's a good guy, but that's a lot to ask. Not to mention that he himself wants to fight Lumon in his own way and he doesn't want to leave that fight to outies who won't understand.
Innie Mark knows his time is limited, so for me this ending is about his taking whatever time to hold Helly's hand and be alive. That's all. And he deserves that.

For all we know the stairwell goes up to a lobby where non informed non severed security are stopping people entering not leaving and don’t know anything , plus cobel and Devon are waiting for her above ground for sure . Harmony would have inside security info , the innies control the se weed floor right now. The show could go on a number of directions but most certainly none that I predicted haha . Glad you understood innie marks choice , so many people don’t get it

No reason that Jame Eagan is too old to be Helena’s biological father. He looks 80. If Helena is 30, or late 20s…. A man can father a child in his 50s, it happens all the time.
I also think Mr. Drummond may be the son of Jame and one of his side pieces. “I sired others in the shadows.” That dude has way too much power in the company to not be part Eagan.

She has some wackadoo theories, but I’d say 2 out of 5 times her inner instinct is SPOT ON and she nails it! Perfect complement to George who is very analytical about everything, and also can be spot on with his predictions, just goes about it in a different way.

I want a t-shirt that in the sunlight, has Dylan saying “Fuck you, Mr. Milchick!” And in the darkness changes to a picture of Seth Milchick and lists his greatest qualities, which must include incredible strength, incredible emotional control, absolute loyalty to the company, and DANCING!
If this show stays tightly written as it is, keeps the key cast members, and ends at like season 4 it will be in the conversation of “best shows of all time” with Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, BCS. I think I’m forgetting one more but I hope I made my opinion clear.

It's funny to think that for all this shows depth, philosophical quandaries, and incredible actiing, lies one of the simplest hooks of writing, a love triangle, it's just depending on how you look at it it becomes a sqaure...or a very open relationship. So glad I've finally seen this though it's incredible, Tramell Tillman does such a good job as Milchick I might have to search for more of his work.

By the way, Robbie Benson (the weird dentist) was a hugely popular young actor in the 70s. I mean BIG. Very unique mannerisms. I haven't seen him in forever, but it looks like he's actually stayed in the biz, doing this and that. Fun seeing him here as a creepy villain. Otherwise... I'll try to be respectful. But, DAMN, nobody (no viewers) really know what is going on. All our theories have little basis on anything solid. First, this is not our universe. That's probably all we really know. All the weird old vehicles, old computer monitors mixed with smart phones and brain implants beyond anything we have now. This is definitely not our universe. But is it a universe connected to ours? Is it, literally, Purgatory? An extreme VR game of the future? It could be anything. We still don't know a damn thing about what is really going on. And Burt suddenly getting sent away on a train to a mysterious destination is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen.

So happy y'all understood innie Mark's decision to stay with Helly rather than go with Gemma. So many people were mad at him for that, but it always made perfect sense to me that for whatever time he has remaining he's going to choose to be with the woman he loves. Them running through the halls having finally made a choice completely for themselves while "Windmills of Your Mind" plays is one of my favorite moments from any tv series. Putting my hat in the ring for Barry to be considered for your next short series. It's 4 seasons but the episodes are only 30 minutes with 8 eps per season. It has some of the most creative, interesting filmmaking of any tv show plus one of the greatest characters of all time.

The egg thing is because if she was Kier reincarnated then she’d enjoy his favourite breakfast. Jame is trying to recreate his grandfather through some weird Elon Musk style breeding programme. In that scene he’s telling Helena she is a failure.
I don’t think Irving has gone for good because we still don’t know who he was on the phone with. He’s been undercover longer than Mark has been Severed.
Jacob King
2025-06-18 12:47:48 +0000 UTC
I think you misunderstood Burt’s story. Irving has been investigating Lumon who he suspects of being involved in several local murders. He thinks Burt may be responsible. Drummond broke into Irving’s house while he was at Burt’s place and read his notes. Helena has sent Burt to get rid of Irving telling her father that he’s being taken care of. Burt is like Grainer and Drummond, a goon/enforcer for the cult, but because his innie loved Irving’s innie he helps him escape. Burt wasn’t severed when he worked for Lumon twenty years ago he was a conscious and willing operator. Fields wanted Burt to sever to save part of his soul because of all the evil he has done for Lumon. When Fields let slip that Burt had a Lumon partner Burt shuts him up because he still works for them.

"'Jame' (Jame Gumb) is also the name of the serial killer known as 'Buffalo Bill' in The Silence of the Lambs. Is 'Jame' used in Severance a reference to that? Maybe!"
I like this idea. In Silence of the Lambs, Jame was making himself a woman suit to wear. So, is Gemma a woman suit for one of them to wear? Have they made Gemma a skin husk. It's as plausible as anything else I've read so far.

My guess: I think the Cold Harbor chip is a more perfect emotional barrier than the current version of the chip. It's not to create robots. It's to fulfill Kier's grand agendum to rid the world of pain. It's not to take away emotions. It's to have full technological control over them. As you said, tame the tempers.
The current versions of the chip are not perfect, which is why Irving dreamt of the black paint and why Mark modeled the tree where Gemma died. Remember that Petey said that Mark still feels the pain down there, he just doesn't know what it is. Cold Harbor is the perfect emotional barrier to remove pain from anyone who doesn't want to feel it. In the last episode of the first season, Jame Eagan said that everyone in the world will have one.
I think they just perfected the chip, and they were going to extract it from Gemma so they can replicate it and start manufacturing it. Since they don't believe reintegration is possible, they think this will kill her or drive her insane, so they were going to kill her to get it. She'll be buried with honors and goat blood and maybe even get an exhibit in the Perpetuity Wing.

I think Gemma is just testing for making a customer facing Severance product. The same way the birthing cabin is, if they equip airplanes, hospitals, dental offices, jobs, etc. with the same technology, regular people could sever just to not have to experience unpleasant necessities, and force an innie to do it. They already introduced the senator who is in favor of making Severance available for everyone in the first season. There's probably other, even more sinister motives though.
Starman Deluxe
2025-06-18 04:15:47 +0000 UTC
My take is this: Cold Harbor is basically an expansion of the Severance procedure. The Eagan goal is to rid the world of pain. So their experiments is how many times must a consciousness be split before it no longer feels pain. And the fact that Gemma didn't feel hurt or triggered by the crib seemed like their experiments were a success, however her inner feeling of trust in Mark proves that there's still intuition, trust, and love somewhere in there regardless of how many times her mind's been split. Like Petey said in season 1: you still feel the pain, you just don't know what it is. Most likely Cold Harbor would be the "new and improved" Severance procedure had it worked and been a success.

Gemma/Ms Casey's actor Dichen Lachman was one of the stars of Dollhouse, the show Joss Whedon did after Firefly. It was about some surprisingly similar themes to Severance of identity and personhood that it also explored in very creative ways. I don't think it's quite as good as Firefly or Buffy but it's well worth watching.
I'm hoping that before they do the thing where Tuvix was a thing, after they do the next thing, that they do the other thing from the time of the thing where Tuvix was a thing, because I like the other thing more than the thing where Tuvix was a thing.
(having fun discussing Simone's Tuvix reference while avoiding spoilers in the most annoyingly vague way possible)

Hey guys, I'm so glad that you watched Severance. Wasn't it Fantastic? That little code that Cobel and the guard at the cabin say to each other, is from an episode of The Twilight Zone. The episode is called "After Hours". Season # 1 Episode #34. Watch it. FYI, I don't know if you changed the way you are showing these, but we couldn't see or hear the episodes at all. They played in the background full screen. The other episodes you had playing small in the foreground lower 3rd. OK, you guys should really watch a great show next called "Mrs. Davis". His subconscious connection to Gemma was enough for him to complete the mission and save Gemma from Lumon. But he's in love with Helly. The same might be true for Outie Mark, who might have a soft spot for Helena, considering they kinda had an interesting interaction at the restaurant. I'd say Lumon is trying to get them to be perfect "blank slates". Not have a drop of their Outie selves or of humanity, whatsoever. They want robots. You can see that in Ms. Casey, who is definetely the most "robotic" of the Innies (and she is THE experiment, after all).

In the shows finale where Adam Scotts character Mark S. is in a fight with the character Drummond actor Adam Scott actually received a concussion on set. During the fight scene Adam was supposed to move his arm to prevent his head from slamming into the wall but it got caught, causing him to hit the wall full force. The shows creators confirmed that it was the shot they used in the show.

Cold Harbor is the ultimate test for the Severance procedure. Jame Eagan, in season one, laid out the idea that everyone should be Severed. Cobel created Severance as a child laborer, likely in an effort to escape the trauma of it all. And the finale stated Lumon's mission as "a war against pain."
They want everyone to be Severed. They want every uncomfortable or traumatic moment to be experienced by an innie, so the outie can remain free of pain or stress. You need to go to the dentist? Use an innie. Need to take a plane flight? Use an innie. The testing floor shows that Lumon can split the mind 20+ different ways and the outie never experiences the trauma of the innie. However, I don't think they accounted for love transcending Severance.
Back in episode one Cobel said "hell isn't real, but whatever humans can imagine they can usually create." Severance is, and will be, eternal torment for innies.
"It's always Christmas."

Episode 9
I’m a little surprised that Milchick would allow a representation of Kier to be destroyed with the sacrifice of the ring toss game.
The train station scene reminded me of the stations in City 17 in Half Life 2.
Simone the birthing retreat looks familiar because it’s the same Damona Birthing Retreat where Devon went in the first season to have her baby.
Episode 10
The music after Cold Harbor gets 100% is “Sirius” by The Alan Parsons Project.
“The Ballad of Ambrose and Gunnel” that the band plays refers to Ambrose Eagan, the second CEO of Lumon Industries and the son of Kier Eagan. Gunnel is a woman who is somehow connected to Ambrose, either a wife or sister. She is memorialized with the Gunnel Eagan Empathy Center in Svalbard, Norway where Ms. Huang is being sent.
“Jame” (Jame Gumb) is also the name of the serial killer known as “Buffalo Bill” in The Silence of the Lambs. Is “Jame” used in Severance a reference to that? Maybe!
The Bolt gun that was accidentally used on Drummond is also called a “captive bolt pistol.”
The ending song is “The Windmills of Your Mind” sung by Mel Tormé.
“Work Song” is sung by Bobby Darin over end credits.
Here is an interesting analysis of the graphic design Lumon uses:

This show is just amazing and I loved how they are taking it slow so we can try to connect the dots before they give us the answers. Like we know that the numbers they were refining are linked to the 4 tempers, which in Kier's belief are the basis of a human mind. To me, you are spot on on your interpretation, George, of why and how Lumen is doing this experience. Severance procedure slipt the mind but still keeps the essence of the person, they can still have a personality, some memories and emotions but it seems that the test for Cold Harbor was to pick all painful or good memories from Gemma and verify if that would still carries over somehow and at each test, they made her more and more blank, until Cold Harbor, which would be her most painful experience and it almost worked. She was feeling nothing, having no emotions or reaction at all, until Mark ruined the test.
This whole thing is bizarre and incredibly dangerous because the implications of having people completely stripped from emotions or reason are enourmous. You cna basically use those people to achieve countless horrible things, like use them in wars, in human tests, in political control. If we tink about the fact that Severance has been done outside of Lumen, like in the case of the pregnant women on the birthing cottages etc, you can definitely think that Lumen with Cold Harbor being a success would use this secretly to control and have even more power over society. That aside, the whole cult shit is extremally dangerous and weird af.
Also, I liked that Mark did not go with her. He did what his outie asked out of him, free Gemma and get her out. He did. However, that is not his life, his like is inside Lumen, with Helly and Dylan and that is what he is fighting for now I guess, their rights to have a life and bring the company down somehow.
I'm super curious to see where they will go from here. I have so many theories, so many questions but I'm also satisfied at the answers we got thus far.

Suggestion for the next short show: Shrinking, created by Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jason Segel, and featuring Harrison Ford giving one of his best performances in a long time. Great show about grief and therapy that's also super funny. Only two seasons so far, with the third one set to come out in the not-too-distant future, with Michael J. Fox and Jeff Daniels both joining the cast. Brett wasn't in season one, but joined the cast for season two and is of course one of the primary writers.

I admit, I was more than a little disappointed when I saw the show got lit for a season 3. I think the season 2 ending is thematically perfect and I hope 3 doesn't dilute things just for the sake of drawing out a popular show.

Hi Bon, if you are getting infinite load, that means either an extension on your browser, or a VPN, or a firewall is blocking the data from reaching you. If you are on a mobile or tablet, try switching to another browser like Firefox.

I have no idea where Severance goes from here.
I don't see a way for Gemma to get to the surface without getting stopped by someone at Lumen and sending her back in.
For Mark and Helly, if they leave the building, Mark Scout will find himself holding hands with Helena Eagan. But if they remain in the building to stay together as their innys, Lumen can always trigger a security protocol to wake their outy. So either stay and remain a prisoner, or escape and you can't be with Helena anyways.

I hated this season to be honest. I might be cynical but it felt like having Mark S go with Helly was just to have shock value for a season 3 instead of the reasonable ending of going with Gemma.

I’m much more interested in the journey than the destination and don’t particularly care if we get answers anytime soon. I love slow burns. I’m in for the long haul, however long it lasts.

That was the most generous reading of the Burt character I've ever seen with the idea he's just been putting people on trains. My reading is that he was severed early as a goon like Irv thought. Outie Burt just remembers driving people places, I think innie Burt was activated at that point to kill and disappear them. Remember how Cobel reacted seeing the driver with Helena earlier this season? She knew something was up with him and left.

1) This argument was baffling to me - the emotional climax does not work if it's not Helly. Everyone involved has confirmed it's Helly ad nauseam.

Hard disagree, but aside from that it was never going to be only 2 seasons. I would guess 4 at this point.

So the two big debates after the finale have been:
1) Was that Helly or Helena in the last episode?
2) Did Mark S. make the right decision?
For my part, I’m 99% sure that it was actually Helly at the end. The counterargument is that it was a selfish act to make Mark S. stay, and so it must be Helena. But I think the point of the season is that the innies and outies, deep down, have a core that is similar. That’s why Helly said “I’m her.” She realizes that part of her is the same, that it MUST be if even Mark couldn’t tell the difference. So Helly accepts that the selfishness of Helena is in her too, and acts on it to run off with Mark S. at the end.
The second question is more furiously debated. While I get that leaving with Gemma would have been the more noble choice in terms of the overall mission against Lumon, I’d be lying if I said that had I been in Mark’s shoes, I wouldn’t have done the same thing. But that’s the romantic in me, I guess. I get that people really wanted to see Mark Scout and Gemma back together, but I’m team Mark S. and Helly R. all the way. And Mark did still get Gemma out like he promised, so...duty fulfilled.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks.

Oh man, season 2... Season 1 was tight and so good and season 2 just felt like wheel spinning a lot of the time. When I went into it I was expecting this was the final season and they would explain everything by the end but man, I feel like we got next to nothing as far as the overall plot. So now we get a third season but what exactly are they going to fill a whole 8-10 episodes with this time? To me it feels like this show should of been 2 seasons but then it got huge and now they want money so they are just stretching it out as much as they can. Honestly if they somehow stretch it into a fourth season I'm just done, I'll wait til there's a quick recap of what happened or just stop caring altogether. That being said there was some pretty awesome stuff in season 2 and we did learn a few key facts but I think there was a lot of meh too.

I have to say, I do kind of wish they'd do a couple of good shorter series before moving on to another multi-season show. Stuff like Queen's Gambit, Adolescence, Midnight Mass, Station Eleven, Beef or other one season shows that would only take a month or so each and make for great reactions as well.

Oh my god guys.. for the next short show poll you guys need to add The Studio! It’s Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg’s latest work, the first season just finished airing and each episode is around 30 minutes long on average, if I had to guess, with 10 episodes iirc. Without giving away too much… it has a lot of cameos from a bunch of popular faces you guys would recognize and is one of the most (unfortunately) accurate satires to come out in recent time.
