Now that you got your first taste of Nicolas Winding Refn, I think it might be time that you guys experienced the late 90s/early 00s Danish Crime Cinematic Universe. The big names here would Refn's Pusher series or In China They Eat Dogs (I know what it sounds like George, but that's not what the movie is about).

Max Krause

The diner was most likely the same in Nightcrawler

SpankTheMonk

We never got to see the race 😔

Gary Fixler

I thought he was going to go under Pershing Square. I live in LA, so I've seen countless chases, often stolen cars, and they basically never get away. The choppers just follow them until they run out of gas, crash, or get walled in somehow. Then one day I saw a guy who had been running for a long time, maybe an hour or more, just go into the massive underground parking garage under Pershing Square in downtown LA. I don't think they ever found the guy. Too huge, too many exits. Kinda brilliant.

Gary Fixler

Thanks for reacting to my favorite film of all time. You should really watch the Every Frame a Painting video on Youtube about it. Its such an interesting film if you watch how the frames are put together. The director is stellar. The Pusher trilogy is excellent and Bronson is a film you guys should definitely react to. It was probably the film that really put Tom Hardy on the map.

Farbod

This movie had realistic suspense banger written all over it with that opening scene. Then wow how it strayed from that, into a slow burn slasher. Huh? What a strange movie, a let down in my book. PS - Bryan Cranston you will always be Walter White man.

Ben

Gosling really doesn't get enough credit for what a terrific actor he is. The man can convey so much, with so little. And yes George, I really hope you two react to not just Before Sunrise, but the entirety of the Before trilogy! I've been hoping to get to experience the magic of those movies with y'all for a while now!

Kaushik Sethunath

In a weird way this was always a big comfort movie for me as a teenager. Probably in large part just because of the soundtrack. It was such a joy to come back to this with you guys, and I love how much you picked up on the ever darkening tone of the movie. I think my young brain missed a lot of that and was just focused on the romantic parts lol. And I love how much you were invested in their chemistry too xD What an amazing movie. I'm so glad you both liked it.

Marylou inProgress

I'm beyond thrilled that you both watched and enjoyed this one! I've got a whole book of a comment that I'm not going to post because I don't feel that I did a good job with the formatting. So instead I'm just keeping it brief. Kick ass movie that I knew you'd dig on. :) Very, very happy that you both liked it.

Logan Kerlee

I saw it as Driver thinks of himself as the scorpion, when he is actually more like the frog. Like in the scene with Benicio, when they talk about sharks, Driver thinks of himself as a shark and is sad, because sharks cannot be good.

Honey Hermsen

One of the best made movies I have ever seen

Honey Hermsen

George! You mentioned a great film "Before Sunrise" as great longing stares. The movie that does this best of course is "In the Mood for Love" (2000)

Shonnicus

Yeah, when she mentioned it, I was like "That's the booth where Jake interviews the guy for a job in Nightcrawler!"

Jeff I.

Great reaction to one of my favorites! One theory I've seen in online discussions of this film is that The Driver is mildly autistic, though I don't know if I agree with it.

Jeff I.

I didn't confirm but I swear that booth was from Nightcrawler when Jake Gyllenhaal interviewed his poor partner early on. The second I saw it that jumped to mind and Simone asking about it made me think it's possible.

RabidMango

Hi Christopher, it looks like your tier should have access as well, will look into it. when you click through into the video, what kind of message do you see? does it say access restricted? is it black screen? or do you get some kind of error message?

George Simone

This is a superhero origin story.

warcrimes

Literally finished watching y'alls reaction to the entire series (as of now) to Ted Lasso. But for some reason, I can't load this one up "Uncovered". I thought I was the tier to view, but I guess you bumped it up a level?

Christopher Carson

Lynne Ramsay, director of “You Were Never Really Here”, is great! Its a shame she takes so long in between projects, but hey, quality over quantity I guess.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

So he did the Mad Max thing, saved the day and then left. I love those movies, and the Dollars Trilogy, because of that, because that's how I am every time I go to work, I save the place from burning down and then I just leave, and I never wanna see any of you people ever again, although I will in the sequel, Tomorrow (I'm kidding of course, fuck that place). I loved that the Driver became the Shape, the Shape you might know was what Michael Myers was called in the script before they figured out his look with the Shatner mask. Great movie actually (great music, I agree, reminds me of 80s Darkwave, which I love, sort of updated) and this movie reminded me of another movie with a similar vibe but darker, a Joaquin Phoenix movie, "You Were Never Really Here". I always struggle with how much to say to pique interest without spoiling too much, suffices to say, he's a war veteran who does stuff, for pay, to people who deserve to have stuff done to them. The first time I heard the "Scorpion and the Frog" parable was in a movie from the 90s called "The Crying Game", unfortunately it was actually part of the joke in Ace Ventura that didn't age well, but it's a good movie in my opinion.

MacGuffinStuff

Definitely co-sign anyone recommending Lars and the Real Girl for a Ryan Gosling follow on, but I'm surprised to not see recommendations for Blue Valentine, a brutally honest portrayal of relationships and one of Ryan Gosling's best early films. It's overwhelming and at times hard to watch but done so well it can't be ignored as one of the best dramas about relationships. The writing, the music. So, so good.

Brandon Meng

Love this movie. great soundtrack the opening song is Nightcall by Kavinsky and George, how dare you say that jacket is ugly jk. This movie is great too introduce you to the world of Synthwave music.

BigGuy209

Ohh my God..... The blood and gore and calmness and sexual tension in this movie is sooooo gooood.... Ummm... 😬😬😬 Amazing movie.

AC10

I love going into movies with no idea what it’s about. These days that’s harder to do, though. You can turn off all lights with most cars. In Canada, all cars imported or manufactured in the country after January 1, 1990 must have Daytime Running Lights, so perhaps Simone that is what you are thinking of? Daytime Running Lights (usually just dimmer forward facing headlights, etc) automatically come on when the car is started, but more likely than not you can turn everything off at least temporarily until you start the car again. My MINI has daytime running lights that can optionally be set to come on when the car starts, but I drive my car with all exterior lighting on all the time. I have a tiny car and want to be visible! The opening sequence feels like a lot of 1980s cop show opening credits. Cary Mulligan is British pulling off a great American accent. The diner location she works at is a Denny’s at 530 Ramirez Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. The jacket isn’t something I’d wear but I think it looks cool. Fun reaction!

REDR58

Oh this is so unfortunate coincidence but the Minnesota shooter was dressed as a cop and wearing a bald man Halloween full latex mask like Driver 😢. The real world is so depressing. Thank you for sharing your reactions with us 🖖🫶

SpankTheMonk

Hot take, but if you would consider watching the very divisive Only God Forgives, by the same director and also featuring Gosling in the lead, you'd be the coolest people ever.

Alexander Sparf

Please please please react to Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy. "Before Sunrise", "Before Sunset", and "Before Midnight". Amazing and life-affirming movies.

Jesse Coombs

Oooh, he was in Out of Sight! I didn’t know that- such a great film

SpankTheMonk

I assume Simone has already seen the Holly Hunter classic Broadcast News, but Albert Brooks is really terrific in that. Other quintessential Brooks roles are in Defending Your Life and Out Of Sight. A movie very similar to Drive in tone, coolness, and soundtrack is The Guest...it also stars a ridiculously handsome lead, but has a much more fun and playful edge to it. Another one that's great to go into not knowing too much.

sarCC

I liked the Neon Demon quite a bit as well for similar reasons

Harry Fieldson

I need to know where George got that Esquie shirt!!!

Ken

Speaking of Jon Bernthal, I hope you guys react to "The Bear". It's a wonderfelt heartfelt show about restaurant work and family.

Jesse Coombs

I've changed the way i see this film totally on second watch. In the film's closing minutes, Albert Brooks recounts the scorpion and frog fable to the driver. Initially, I interpreted this parable as casting the driver as the scorpion, inherently violent and dangerous by nature. But this reading really only reflects the driver's own self-perception. We as the audience witness his genuine compassion and self-sacrifice. I now think the driver actually embodies the frog, offering his services to transport criminals who assure him their predatory instincts won't be directed at him. After all, harming their getaway driver would jeopardize their own escape. This is really hammered home in the final scene. After the driver leads Albert Brooks to the money (his destination), he's immediately betrayed with a knife attack. This betrayal results in Brooks' death and, following the logic of the fable, likely seals the driver's fate as well. Edit: Just watched the trivia!

Ste Rawlings

Should ask in the Tech chat area too

SpankTheMonk

Does the new uncovered react on the website go out of sync once the studio logos appear for anyone else?

Harry Fieldson

Also, if you want to see more of NWR's work, I highly recommend his next one, Only God Forgives; it's very style over substance, but it's good style. Quick fun fact, him and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima are besties, to the point that both have appeared on each other's work; Kojima in the show Too Old to Die Young and NWR in Death Stranding.

Ari Ramirez

OMG George YES! to watching The Before Trilogy.

Ste Rawlings

Human 🫘. The NWF movies have visceral gore and violence. I love Simone’s head cannon- I now think that is what happens 😃. Standards death was maybe standard 🙈

SpankTheMonk

The Carey M physical action/acting after Ryan leaves her apartment was so good, attempting to lock the door but not actually and distractingly touching her lips absentmindedly thinking about him - 👏. Cook was in the chasing car and got hurt during their crash I believe. I think Ryan is also the scorpion, every layer down. They think he is the frog but he is dangerous too

SpankTheMonk

On the Bernthal talk, Wind River and The Bear would be great watches to see a different side of him.

Ste Rawlings

Back when it came out, some people criticized Ryan Gosling's performance for being too flat, but I'm glad you guys picked up on all the subtleties

Ari Ramirez

Suggestion: Pleasantville (1998)

Jonathan Eaton

When you guys saw him blink I’m pretty sure the director wants you to believe his alive. Why would he not told the “girl friend” that he will be missing? So Simone us as the viewers him driving away and the money bag is still in the ground is another “dead” give away 😆. Also Simone i know you liked this song…….Nightcall by Kavinsky. George nice reaction buddy, I also didn’t liked how the movie portrayed him as the good guy and then killing away like he had the right to do so.

FranciscoGios

The Guest is amazing and you can say its in the steps of this film.

SpankTheMonk

100💯🙌

SpankTheMonk

Ok please explain “marmite” in his output?

SpankTheMonk

Me too

SpankTheMonk

No way, that is so cool- which scenes did you drive in? Great work by the way

SpankTheMonk

To bad the film distributor NEON wasn’t around the time 😁 to distribute it

SpankTheMonk

Agree with others about Lars and the Real Girl. Another subtle but powerful performance from Ryan Gosling.

Anthony Villena

Netflix? I thought it was Amazon for the movie? Anyway the film is amazing and the soundtrack 🍻

SpankTheMonk

If the story of the film follows the Scorpion and the Frog parable to its conclusion, then yes, the driver dies in the end, as both the Frog and the Scorpion die before reaching the other side of the river. The final scene of the driver at night can be interpreted as the afterlife where those who made bad choices only see dark, dark roads ahead of them. However, there is a sequel book to the original novel of which this film was adapted from, written by the original author as well. I won't go too deeply into it, but the driver (Gosling's character) returns in it.

JDV

Now that they have been introduced to Nicolas Winding Refn, they can do The Neon Demon next. His cinematography and shot composition is beautiful and interesting. Even his netflix show was interesting, weird but beautiful and interesting.

E G

And the film 😃

SpankTheMonk

Soundtrack and Score 🔥🎶

SpankTheMonk

Bronson 🖖

SpankTheMonk

A Real Human Bean And A Real Hero 🦂 This is George's favorite genre: a competent guy doing what he does competently This is one of my favorite movies. Soundtrack is on my regular driving rotation. Can't wait to watch with you guys. Edit: I love how human the Driver is. Like, yes he seems to have this almost superhuman focus, but other than that, he smiles when Irene shows up at the garage, cracks jokes with the kid, about the wheels, etc. He's just a guy. Seems to have some kind of weirdo complex wherein he thinks he's a superhero, but just a guy still. Also George finally getting the bean comments hahaha

p0sthum4n

Yes! George mentioned Before Sunrise during this reaction. Please watch the entire "Before" trilogy! I think Simone would really love it too.

JDV

Pretty sure when he drives off in the end, that's him dying...or dead...or in the afterlife. However you want to imagine it.

Steve Mercier

If either of you want to see jon bernthal play a role totally different than anything you've ever seen him do, he had a small part in on episode on the TV show How I Met Your Mother. This was before he did The Walking Dead so he was an unknown. All I can say it ... that hair of his... yikes. But just type "Jon Bernthal How I Met Your Mother" into YouTube, it'll come up.

akaTheBARON

I'm glad you two enjoyed this. I hadn't seen this and now I have. I can't really say why, but it didn't do much for me? Kinda just made want to go watch "The Guest (2014)".

droodly

I need to see you two react to A History of Violence and Eastern Promises ( I think Viggo Mortensen plus more "grounded" stories than Cronenberg's usual might be up your alley)

Michael Green

The real shame of it is that Charles Bronson couldn’t play Charlie Bronson.

REDR58

Firstly… THAT JACKET IS AWESOME GEORGE! IT’s a satin racing jacket and it has a LOT of symbolism from film history and story classical story telling. So the jacket is a reference to a short film from the 1960s called SCORPIO RISING and it’s about deconstructing the archetypes about loner biker “heroes” from movies at the time. The kind of rebel thug that is capable of love and also extreme violence and danger. This whole movie is riffing on that too with the archetype of the Byronic Hero (as in Lord Byron), that dangerous bad boy who’s capable of deep love. The repeated line of “Real human being, and a real hero” is directly talking about this idea. The “hero” of Scorpio Rising relates back to the scorpion on the jacket which in this case isn’t a biker jacket but rather a satin racing bomber jacket, something common in car culture, especially California cruising car culture. The jacket also became ICONIC and is one of the most sold replica pieces of clothing in movie history. Now for recommendations if you dug this… Pusher, where Mads Mikkelsen got his start with the same director. It’s a Danish crime film about low level guys. Not quite as stylish as this but VERY impactful. And you get to see a BABY Mads from the mid 90s. Then BRONSON the true story of the UK’s most dangerous inmate, Charlie Bronson, played by Tom Hardy. The movie is HEAVILY inspired by the work of Kubrick and the real Charlie Bronson’s art work. INCREDIBLE performance from Hardy… I honestly think his best performance by miles and it’s not even close. I also really like Neon Demon starring Elle Fanning in the cut throat world of modeling. The less you know about that one the better, even the cast is a shocker.

djKENTO

Last Night in Soho +1!

Odd Thomas

Classic. The only other NWR film I like is 'Neon Demon'. He's very marmite in his output. For more Carey Mulligan I recommend 'Never Let Me Go'.

Odd Thomas

I want to visit an alternate reality where Hugh Jackman played the Driver. I don't think he'd be better at all, but I'm extremely curious. I was lucky enough to see this in a theatre. Pretty sure my local theatre only played it for two weeks. Albert Brooks as a villain still shocks me to this day. Refn is a great director imo but his movies can be hit and miss for me. He did another movie with Ryan Gosling after this 'Only God Forgives' and it's one of those movies where I still can't tell if I like it or not.

Brandon

george with the WEEWOO tshirt

Ketzalborne

Since the plot is a bit confusing, I'll lay it out. Nino was mad at the mob for a) moving in on his territory and b) all the antisemitic comments they made toward him. So, he paid Cook to rob the place, not wanting it to be tied back to him. Nino knew who he was robbing, but Cook didn't. Cook pressured Standard into robbing the place via his debt. Cook thought they were getting only 40K and didn't know the place was mob-run. Nino hired the other guy (the buddy in the sling who Ernie killed) to rob Standard right after the robbery. Both Cook and Blanche knew this would happen but didn't know they were stealing from the mob; however, Standard and the Driver had no idea. No one was supposed to die. However, the mob-run pawnshop owner followed after Standard and killed him (because he is a mob guy). This caused the driver to flee, which caused the other dude in the car to come after him for the money. The driver flips his car and breaks his arm. Blanche called Cook to let him know what happened. Cook called in a hit on them to get the money back (or maybe he just called Nino, and Nino called the hit). The driver asked Shannon to track down Cook. Cook asked for help from Bernie, who had no idea any of this was happening or involved Nino. The driver threatened Cook and found out it was Nino. The driver calls Nino and tries to return the money, but Nino is scared that the mob will find out and decides that everyone must die. He comes clean to Bernie, and Bernie agrees that everyone needs to die too, and Bernie kills the guy in the sling who was supposed to rob Standard. Shannon tells Bernie what has happened, trying to fix things, including who Irene is. Nino sends one of his dudes after Irene to take hostage to lure the driver out, but the Driver kills that dude in the elevator. The driver is pissed that Nino knows about his address and Irene, so he confronts Shannon. Things get heated, but he calms down and tells him to run. Before Shannon can escape, Bernie kills him. The driver, in retaliation, kills Nino and then goes to the meet, knowing it's a trap. He kills Bernie and is stabbed. No one left alive knows about Irene, but the mob can still find out that it was the driver who robbed them and killed their associates, Nino and Bernie, so the driver takes off to protect Irene. Oh, and my headcanon is that the Driver is a reformed hitman who doesn't want to kill anymore (or a reformed slasher villain). That's why he tells everyone that he won't carry a gun and just drives. He must have run away from someone else and just appeared in LA. Now he has to do it again.

Twiska Brand

Tony from Every Frame a Painting made me discover this film, and I'll forever be thankful for it. And George, I'm forever mad at you for calling that jacket ugly. :-D I love the gold scorpion jacket. I bought 3 of them.

Tom Hess

i love the jacket, just wanted George to know that lol

BlindPanda

I hadn’t even heard of this movie until last year when the preorder for the 4K Steelbook release was announced and it arrived this past August. I ordered it without knowing a single thing about the movie other than Gosling was in it and I enjoyed it very much.

REDR58

Have you seen the Breaking Bad "alternate ending"?

Rev

For sure it's very easy to construct your own ending with this. I imagine he just left, but for sure he very easily could have gone back. Maybe they eloped :) It's a super arty movie, Bernie says at some point that critics said the movies he produced were "European" and that he thought they were shit - he means massively pretentious and moody and excessively long shots and almost totally devoid of any sort of identifiable plot - this movie is almost painfully of that type of movie (though, y'know, better), almost like Hollywood revival of that, in some ways it's kinda surprising it didn't kick-start a whole series of movies trying to copy it. Even though it wasn't very successful in terms it was massively profitable because the budget was tiny, you could use it almost as a "Make Hollywood Great Again" template - movies don't need to have 300 million dollar budgets to make a difference in the world. Critics love it but not many saw it on release but it's one of those movies that has gained fairly massive cult status; John Wick was the same era shares that sort of nobody actually really saw it on release but relative to its budget it was enormously profitable vibe. I personally think it's one of Gosling's best movies, fite me. People always think Walter White with Bryan Cranston, but he'll always be the dad from Malcolm in the Middle to me. This movie help kick-start the interest in Synthwave and inspired a lot of Synthwave groups to start. It's a great soundtrack.

Martin Nicholls

I liked OGF too. Refn does always get really beautiful shots. I see a possible Michael Mann influence in a lot of them from this film.

Grandalf

Nickolas Winding-Refn is a great writer/director and really underrated in my opinion. Valhalla Rising, with Mads Mikkelson is another wild one. If I remember correctly there's hardly any dialogue in it. Funny, I was just about to mention I love the way he uses light and shadow, and his shot blocking and Simone is talking about just that as I type this out. It's pretty obvious why Drive wasn't more popular, when you look at how it was marketed. Imagine the average movie goer expecting to see an entertaining action / heist movie ( if I remember the trailer correctly, it was dominated by the one chase scene) and instead of something like Baby Driver, you get a dark, hyper-violent character study with a side of romance. Must've killed the word of mouth. That said, it actually did well at the box office, espescially considering it's 15 million dollar budget.

Grandalf

So glad you guys managed to eventually get around the film which I star in! I'm literally the driver! :D

Myles Casey

Watching the reaction and comparing I’d say the difference could be understood as Frankenstein vs Dracula. The driver is a Frankenstein’s creature, a monster striving to be human, but Baby is an innocent fighting against an evil and seductive corruption. All the robbers in that movie are different shades of vampire - Jamie Fox’s character is even called Bats.

Jacob King

Nicolas Winding Refn is one of the best Danish directors, although the violence in his movies can be quite shocking, if you don't know his style! He started out with the movie 'Pusher' that is about hardcore criminals in Copenhagen, it got two sequels and they're all very worth watching, if you can find a version with subtitles!

Denashi

Forgot how much the neon look of this movie had a subsequent impact on other films. Also having Albert Brooks (Brad Goodman himself) play against type was a great casting choice for Bernie considering his filmography. Oh random fact - this and No Country For Old Men have the same poster tagline. Perhaps Anton Chigurh’s in this movie’s world too? 🤔

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

So funny you surprised by the violence. Welcome to the Nicolas Winding Refn realm. :D You can try his other films too. 'Only God Forgives' has very mixed review but I kinda like it, Ryan Gosling is here too, 'Neon Demon' is very trippy, but a very beautifully shot movie with Elle Fanning. 'Bronson' is mostly a very liked movie with Tom Hardy. 'Valhalla Rising' starring Mads Mikkelsen.

Zoltán Bublos

The clip of Berenthal sitting with Deborah Ann Woll is what Simone was referencing to... Watching Jon's eyes light up with delight as he gets drawn in is beautiful...

Logan Nelson

Real human bean!

Rev

I love this movie, but I can understand you being bored by it. I think it falls into the "love it or hate it" category. If the style of filmmaking doesn't work for you, I don't think a million watches will change your mind.

Freddy Cougar

I remember watching this movie when it first came out, and just being straight up bored... I haven't seen it since. Was I a cinema neophyte and should I give this movie another chance? Or is this a "love-it-or-hate-it" kind of thing?

Onno Smits

You mentioned Baby Driver in the intro. I will take this opportunity to mention another Edgar Wright movie. Last Night in Soho (2021) has a very distinct vibe like Drive does, I think you guys would love it.

JediLounger

Baby Driver and Drive are both European directors going to America and riffing on an old Steve McQueen film called the Getaway but they’re not really similar.

Jacob King

Nicholas Refn directed Bronson with Tom Hardy worth checking out. My favourite Ryan Gosling movies are Lars and the real girl and Blue Valentine.

beecroft adams

The movie that made neon lights cool again. Also influenced a lot of indie films that came out after, as well as games like Hotline Miami!

Real Human Peen

This movie is literally about me
