Night of the Living Dead - Patreon Version

Ok. Y’all. I’ve been subbed on YouTube for a while. Ain’t gonna lie you’ve been on fire lately and your Star Trek is making me give you a try on Patreon. Love you so far. Let’s get it!!!!!

Some zombie movie recommendations: Return of the Living Dead (1985, horror comedy, brain eating zombies make their debut) Dead Alive/Braindead (1992, horror comedy by Peter Jackson) Re-Animator (1985, based on the Lovecraft short story)

As a useless and annoying person, I take offense. Without us people who act like people in traumatic situations, there would be no heroes. Y'all need us to make you look cool.

I love that you guys were into this, see I'm telling you Simone, I'm not the biggest fan of gore generally, but some zombie movies are really interesting, and sometimes fun, like Return of the Living Dead or Fido. The 1990 remake of this is great, Romero produces, directed by Tom Savini (Sex Machine lol, and Army medic in Vietnam, also make up and effects artist, btw he used real animal parts for this movie, including I think a sheep's head for the dead body scene). Tony Todd and Patty Tallman are fantastic in the lead roles, Tom Towles as Cooper too. Dawn of the Dead is great, I think most often the favorite for people who love the orginal trilogy, but my favorite is Day of the Dead, it really explored the idea of intelligence in the undead, and the makeup was great (Savini I think I remember did like a mea culpa about the blue faces in Dawn). And hey, if you watch all those movies plus a couple of Italian classics, you'll get pretty much every reference in Shaun of the Dead.

Y'all really should watch Lincoln (2012) soon. It just somehow seems like a very fitting movie to watch during a Summer where the US is going to rip itself apart from the inside. Would also highly recommend Alex Garland's Civil War (2024). Hold on to your butts people.

I hope you're on board for the sequels now. Dawn of the Dead is a true 70's classic that tops this film in nearly every way. It's VERY different than the remake, so it wouldn't be derivative to react to. Day of the Dead is the third, it's probably the bleakest of the three, but a lot of people consider it to be the best one. IMO it has the best human villain in a zombie movie. On top of that "Return of the Living Dead" has been mentioned by several others already. It's where the trope of zombies eating brains came from, and possibly the first example of zombies that haul ass and chase you down. Without saying much, it treats the plot of this film as if it were a real-life event that was covered up by the government. Arguably the best zombie movie ever made.

SINNERS That's a movie request, not a judgement. (although I suspect George shows more ankle than a proper lady should.)

I liked how the first episode of The Last of Us season 1 had a small reference to this. The opening talk show scene took place in 1968.

recommend:-The Day of the Triffids (1963)

This original version is good, and certainly a classic, but I would suggest watching the 1990 remake. It is just as good, and follows most of the original story, but fixes some areas that were rather annoying in the original. Example: in the remake Barbara is not so useless and annoying.

The eating of brains didn't come around until 1985 with THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, which is one of my favorite films of all time. The term Zombie--until the movies corrupted it--was a Haitian term referring to undead slaves created through voodoo and other religious practices, and were not "flesh eaters". The 1932 film White Zombie is highly considered the first "zombie" film, but it's about a sugar cane plantation owner and the zombie slaves he uses in his fields. NOTLD is the grandfather of the modern idea of zombies, even though the film doesn't refer to them as such.

Yeah, it bothers me every time they use "Survivor Girl" instead of the more common term of "Final Girl". Don't know where they got it, but it's like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Tony E Crumpton

Thanks for this it was a fun reaction. I would recommend the sequel Dawn of the Dead, and then Return of the Living Dead which was created by George Romero's co-writer from this movie after they split up, without giving away any spoilers between those two movies it will answer the question of where brains come into the lore and they are essential Zombie genre movies.

John

I'm curious where y'all heard the phrase "Survivor Girl" instead of the more commonly used (I think) phrase "Final Girl?" Is it a Canadian thing?
