Did anyone notice Bond doing the Riker when answering the phone towards the end of the movie?

There's a feel or texture to the writing that's very much a cool 50s-60s guy thing. The old films capture the feel of the books better than later movies I think because they are closer in time to them. Some directors also want their vision to supersede the writer's which I think Guy Hamilton tended towards. Terence Young directed "Dr. No", "From Russia With Love", and "Thunderball" which to me are the ones that best capture the feel of the books. Of course the other movies are good. "Goldfinger", "Live and Let Die", "Casino Royale" and "No Time to Die" are all just wonderful movies. However they do not feel like the books to me at all.

I recall this movie being closest to Ian Flemings book, except with the use of SPECTRE instead of the real Russian SMERSH counter-espionage org.

Octopussy was actually the first Bond movie I saw on TV, followed closely by Never Say Never Again. I was so confused as why were there two James Bonds....

Yeah this is up there for best Bond films personally: it has cool action, great pacing and the spy hijinks between Bond and Grant make for excellent suspense. In terms of the innuendos they definitely get more outrageous - especially once the Roger Moore era kicks in! One in particular I heard in my early teens and have never forgotten it 🤣

Ahhh, 1983...I was 9 years old and was able to say "-pussy" without getting in trouble. Seriously, seeing that title on broadcast TV movie trailers was fucking WILD.

You are right, this is where they finally had the budget for some more globe-trotting and bigger stunts. The helicopter pilot was a real daredevil and worked for the series a long time, even after crashing later! I hope you see into stunt trivia on later films. A super good time with belly dances and massive chest hair :D

I actually would like to see them react to Never Say Never Again...

If you look up Sean Connery Bond films you might see one that’s called Never Say Never Again (1983) it’s not part of the 25 Bond Films. Definitely my favorite Bond picture from the Connery era. Enjoyed Connery’s portrayal here, I think this was his Bond-est Bond yet. More realistic, I guess, than any of his other Bond films. Really liked Robert Shaw (Jaws, Force 10 from Navarone, The Deep) as the huge blonde SPECTRE agent. Also, the lovely Daniela Bianchi as Tatiana. 😳 Some more Bond-like, non-Bond movies to consider: * North by Northwest (1959) * The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) * Three Days of the Condor (1975) * Marathon Man (1976) * No Way Out (1987) * Ronin (1998) * Eye of the Needle (1981) * The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) * The Fourth Protocol (1987) * Spy Game (2001)

From Russia With Love was the second movie, but the fifth novel in the series. It completely threw readers for a loop with a structure different than the previous novels. The entire first half is written from Grant's POV before Bond even enters into the story and takes over as the POV character like usual. Despite not adapting the film version that way (understandable), this one has always been my favourite of the Connery movies, with Grant being one of my favourite villains out of ALL of them. In the novel Grant is an agent of SMERSH, not SPECTRE, who did not appear until a later novel. SMERSH was a real Soviet counter-intelligence agency and they didn't want to ruffle any Russian feathers during the Cold War with this film's plot, so they changed it. They even make a point of having Grant correct Bond when he assumes he's with SMERSH just so there's no confusion. The novel begins with a note from Ian Fleming: "Not that it matters, but a great deal of the background to this story is accurate. ... SMERSH, a contraction of Smiert Spionam—Death to Spies—exists and remains today the most secret department of the Soviet government." At the end of the film, Bond avoids Rosa Kleb's poison knife in her boot and Tatiana shoots her. In the novel, Kleb actually succeeds and the story ends with a cliffhanger as Bond collapses. The next book was Doctor No, where Bond is back on active duty after a long period of recovery. Since Dr. No was the first movie though, there's a line at the start about Bond needing 6 months to recover after the last time he needed to use his weapon. It was a subtle nod to the book readers who knew that they were actually seeing an adaptation of the sixth book and not the first.

I love how thirsty both George and Simone are for this reaction!

Mastervodo

Be careful. If you Google only Sean Connery Bond movies you'll skip On Her Majesty's Secret Service which comes between You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever...
