I thought they were zils ("zil" means "cymbal" in Turkish). Such finger cymbals are used in "ortaoyunları", that is, belly dancing.

At some point in the last few years a Craig bond movie came out and we thought "hey we should watch that, but we gotta do the previous Craig ones first" so we did them. Once we finished those, we thought, "hey, lets do the older ones". thats pretty much it. Occam's razor, not any specific plan or decision.

2025-06-05 15:40:57 +0000 UTCThis one actually is Stephen Spielberg's favorite Bond movie. There are multiple references to From Russia With Love in Raiders and The Last Crusade. (For historical context, Stephen Spielberg was a longtime 007 fan and pleaded with United Artists to Direct "For Your Eyes Only" in the late 1970s, but was turned down. Although George Lucas had his own 1950s pulp film inspirations for Indiana Jones, Spielberg's intent was to live out his fantasy of shooting a Bond movie.)

I’ve been pretty critical of the decision because it doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever, but I’m open to a reasoning that I haven’t thought of. If you guys could point me to where George and Simone explain why they chose to do it this way I’d be most appreciative.

2025-06-05 15:34:56 +0000 UTCUnfortunately as you noticed with Klebb there is an intentional subtext that she is a lesbian. In fact the novel outright states she is. Ian Fleming was a massive homophobe and in the novel he makes most of the villains queer, including Klebb, kronsteen (the chess guy), and the blonde assassin grant. This was an extremely homophobic attempt to show how “perverse” and “evil” they are, especially compared to the dashing and very heterosexual Bond. It sadly is an attitude that still exists today.
