Star Trek: Wrath of Khan

Comments

Hey, now you both can get the Spock reference that was made near the end of Deadpool & Wolverine…”the noble sacrifice” part

JH

What a film! A few fun facts: - As a few people have already mentioned - the reason Scotty is so upset when that engineer dies, is that it's his nephew. Can't remember if it's covered in the directors cut or novel...... - The montage before they enter the nebula - you were curious what they were doing...... The torpedo launchers were damaged in the initial attack; so they are manually loading torpedo's. You see the same room at the end, as Spock's body is launched from there. - In that same sequence, one of the extra's walking down the corridor towards the camera is a young James Horner, who wrote the amazing score for the film!

Nistrali

I cannot wait for TNG, the first season is gonna be a bit rough though.

Craig

In the extended edition you learn that the man Scotty is carrying is actually his nephew

Old School Drew

Kirk should have sent over a zip file with some Genesis MP3s in it

What I remember from wrath of khan it was well known that Nimoy did not want to go on with the series. Everybody always hoped that somehow everything will be rectified between everybody, but that cast had a lot of problems, usually because of Shatner, they really couldn’t stand working with him. It’s what makes galaxy quest so funny how the cast of galaxy quest doesn’t like Jason Nesmith, or whatever his name is. It’s kind of how the Star Trek cast viewed Shatner. Alan Rickman, not wanting to say “By Grapthar’s hammer…” was because Nimoy got sick of having to say Live Long and prosper. Then when he just nails it in ST:2, it was sort of a curse that never left him. Last i heard he was fine with the phrase because it had made him a buttload of money. It also wasn’t certain that they were gonna be more Star Trek movies. The first one was a bomb everybody thought it was boring. I think the movie is brilliant cause it’s exactly like a regular Star Trek episode, but it wasn’t action enough. It was boring to a lot of people, and so that movie did not do well or as well as the studio hoped considering they put a lot of money into it with special effects and stuff. Plus, Nimoy at the time was a hot shit Director. He directed Three Men and a Baby. One of his great acting movies is in invasion of the body snatchers. He’s freaking amazing and the movie that’s a great movie anyway you should watch it. It was apparent though that Nimoy was going to have to come back after Star Trek 2. That movie was a phenomenon. It’s one of those movies that everyone saw because the movie moves so fast. As a fan, the scenes with Kirk and Spock just ripped me apart, especially with the scene in which Kurt realizes that Spock isn’t on the bridge. The look that goes through Kirk’s face. It’s Shatner at his best. So Nimoy was kind of forced to come back for Star Trek three because Star Trek two was such a huge movie. He knew that everybody in the world was gonna go watch Star Trek three. So they were they could write their own ticket for how much money they were gonna get. Everybody knew that movie was gonna make money handover fist because of how shocking the Star Trek 2 death scene is. it became a phenomenon everybody watched the movie when it came out. The word of mouth for that movie was fantastic. As a fan, not knowing that Nimoy. was gonna come back it was gutwrenching. I went like opening night cause I’m a huge Star Trek fan and although there had been rumors that there going to be a death scene in the movie, you know you are hoping not to see that and then when it does appear and it’s so devastating. I mean that scene is just insane. The scene in which Nemo turns to the screen and looks right into it and he realizes hey I can go down and fix that from that moment until the end of the movie it’s just perfection. It’s also easily the best Star Trek movie. easily. Star Trek four gets a lot of credit, but as the years pass it, I don’t like it nearly as much as i used to. I think it’s essentially the same movie as Star Trek one. Which I think is the second best star trek movie Star Trek 2: the wrath of khan is the best Star Trek movie. The second is the first Star Trek movie. It was great because it’s most of all the movies is the one most like a real episode. So, two requests. Watch the 78? Version of invasion of the body snatchers, and rewatch GalaxyQuest. Now that you’ve watched so much TOS. You’ll just laugh your ass off. I remember you guys loving the Galaxy quest the first time around but you should watch it now that you’ve watched TOS. That movie is hilarious. Once you know some of the history of the original series. You should also look up when Shatner is on Saturday Night Live and he does a skit the he tells all these Star Trek nerds to go and get a life , it’s one of the funniest moments in Saturday Night Live history and Star Trek history. So three requests look that up on YT, Shatner on SNL

You can watch star trek movies 1 through 6 before next generation

Alexander C Chalk

Imagine my reaction when I saw this in a theater and had no knowledge there would be more movies.

Waitaminute. So the guy whose salute was inspired by the Jewish priestly hand formation died because of who? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kahn :-P

Never forget the Christmas edition.. The Wreath of Khan

Chris Nielsen

With TOS knowledge, you can go through Star Trek 1 through 6. Part 6 is essentially the conclusion for the TOS crew, and Part 7 is the intersection with TNG.

doe555

Hey, man! The flap is cool, we love the flap!

Gryff

Godddd, X-Files remains one of my pillars of television. The writing, the acting, the photography, the mood…

Michael

I still like IV the best, but this one's just barely behind it.

JoeNotCharles

Speaking of classics, we see Moby Dick in Khan's bookshelf. "From Hell's heart, I stab at thee;" is from that book.

Ampersander7

I know, right? It's not often we get such a raw behind-the-scenes look at Cinebinge. The discussion over which of the two would get to "wear" Khan's decollete became so heated that I had to step in and say: "That's enough! Neither of you will get that exposure!" The thumbnail captures their response.

Happy Hanukkah

Stranger things plssss

PASCAL Schüttte

I rewatched your "Paul" reaction and you both mentioned wanting to watch "The X-Files" I hope so 1 day

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, is the opening line to Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities”, the book Spock gifted Kirk on his birthday. “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done” is the last line from same book after a character sacrifices himself for the greater good. Always loved the way they spun that.

Aric Heintzelman

A bit of trivia: this movie was supposed to be named “The Revenge of Khan”, but got renamed to “The Wrath of Khan” to avoid confusion with the new Star Wars film, “The Revenge of the Jedi”—which subsequently got renamed to “The Return of the Jedi”, but “The Wrath of Khan” stuck. And I’m glad it did!

dc

I know Simone and George are partial to the color uniforms, but the naval-style uniforms in the TOS Trek movies are my favorites. The flap that folds down is completely unnecessary but I love it anyway.

dc

They’re planning to watch in release order, so TNG will start after Star Trek IV. I’m in favor—it’ll break up TNG a bit, since otherwise it’ll be a very long run.

dc

You can tell that Nimoy enjoyed making this film. He shines in his role in the “Wrath of Khan”. It’s a great movie if you love Spock’s character.

dc

Regarding the death of Spock, it's bit of a complicated tale: Like you saw in the Trivia, Leonard Nimoy only agreed to return for this movie on the condition that Spock be killed off for real. He was tired of the franchise, and the way everybody associated him with Spock instead of himself. He had even written a book in the '70s titled "I Am Not Spock". The news of his death leaked during production, so they included the "everybody dies in the simulator" opening to throw everybody off. While making the film, Nimoy rediscovered his love of the franchise. it was apparently a great filming experience in-and-of-itself, and he reconnected with the other cast members as friends instead of forced coworkers. Nimoy had so much fun on this film that he directed the next film in order to stay involved with the franchise.

JBK405

That thumbnail, magic.

Bookwormy

Today is also the 43rd anniversary of this film’s release

Robert Evans

A lovely reaction! You can imagine how hard this ending hit us when we first saw it in theaters. We were devastated. Interestingly, I'd already (over the previous eight years) come to the conclusion that Spock needed to die for thematic and artistic reasons. So when I saw it, I was sad, but not entirely surprised. In fact, George, after my dad saw this film, he consistently referred to it as "the film in which William Shatner plays a white whale."

Ken Schneyer

Depends on who you ask... This is a good movie, but is it "Star Trek"? 1, 4, 6... even god help me, 5 are "Star Trek" This is a good space opera, but it is definitely NOT high concept sci-fi. It is definitely in the "Even Numbered Star Treks are the Good Ones, until JJA".

Robert Cooper

That's a thumbnail for the ages.

Robert Cooper

This movie was released exactly 43 years ago today in the U.S., June 4th, 1982.

Mastervodo

Horner's score is top notch, even to this day...

Paul T Hewes

"It was a hell of a thing when Spock died" - George Costanza

Daniel Dawson

for a long time, this was the gold standard for Trek sequels, and movies.

Paul T Hewes

I remember seeing this when it first came out. The rumors were that Spock was going to die because Nimoy wanted it. The opening with the crew dying in the simulation and then Kirk saying to Spock "Aren't you dead?" felt like a wink at the fans made us wonder if the rumors were perhaps fake.

Zinphad

Great that they included the opening frame of Kill Bill in this movie.

Mastervodo

Kinda weird he didn't take him to sickbay! He should have gone there before just hauling him up to the bridge to show him off like that!

Mastervodo

Ah yes, the film where Kirk expresses his hatred for Comic-Con and all related Cons.

Adam Vialpando

Take my like and get out of my sight.

Adam Vialpando

How many ears does Captain Kirk have? 3. The left ear, the right ear, and the final front ear

Nate Gavin

I read in an interview that Koenig recognized the mistake but said nothing because he feared how his part might change. A lot of fan have retconned with various backstories and theories.

Robert Evans

I met the director Nichola Meyer at a convention in L.A. and confirmed that one of the brilliant things in this film was his idea not the editors. *every time* a weapon strikes a ship, eithe Reliant or Enterprise the very next shot is of people being hurt and killed by the event. It keeps the human coast of battle front and center so it's never just SFX and models.

Robert Evans

The crew member Scotty brought to the bridge, who was mortally wounded is revealed to be Scotty's nephew in a different cut of the movie. That is why Scotty was so emotional over him.

Matt O'Keefe

George. In my opinion the best time to start watching TNG is right after Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home which came out only a year before TNG started broadcasting in 1987. You could watch Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) before starting TNG without any harm, but the events in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country are inspired by a change in circumstances in TNG that the writers of the movie ran with, so at least start season 1 of TNG before Trek 6. As for the timeline. The last original crew movie is set in the year 2293 whilst the first season of TNG is set in 2364 so no timeline overlap at all.

dudewheresmycar

Quite the feat of temporal acrobatics you just pulled off... SCAN THIS GUY FOR TACHYONS!

Gryff

KHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!

Gryff

I'm still surprised that Simone didn't know the plot of this movie...is amazing how she was kept safe from knowing it until this moment, I practically found out when I was 7 and hadn't seen any Star Trek media...

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

I'm so hoping they don't run out of steam before they get there! It's my favorite ST show!

Pam Nail

I always chuckle when Khan and Chekov recognize each other because Chekov wasn't on the show yet when "Space Seed" aired.

Pam Nail

Sorry if this has been covered- but are you guys going through the whole franchise? Please tell me you will be watching Deep Space Nine in 4 years!

Randy Watson

Ok,ok I figured something out. When they see food, they're instantly hungry. When George sees smoke, he wants smoke 😉 and now I've just noticed George is sometimes hard on the wardrobe department.

ShoNuff3000

Longtime Star Trek fan and after 35 years of fandom, this movie is my number one Star Trek moment. Kirk's send off speech when his voice breaks was ad-libbed and always tears me up.

Nick Scholz

You guys really need to check out the Saturday Night Live sketch where William Shatner hosted. The Enterprise has been turned into a Diner restaurant. It’s on YouTube. Enjoy!

Roddrick Smith

Hi Joe, the full lengths do exist! they are always posted together with the YT cuts. to find them you can just click on the tag that says "Wrath of Khan" and it will show you all other posts that share the same tag, including the other version. Provided you are on the right membership tier for access. Cheers!

George Simone

No full length reactions to the movies?

Joe Concepts

NO Spoilers Star Trek timeline: Dictators who are genetically engineered divide up the Earth in the 1990s. Khan is one of them. There is a nuclear war in the 2030s and Earth rebuilds. Zephram Cochrane who you saw in the TOS episode with the female cloud creature who merges with the dying female diplomat invents Warp Drive in the 2060s and the Vulcans seeing Earth can travel faster than light opens relations. The Federation is formed in 2161. TOS takes place a hundred years later in 2266-2269. This movie and other TOS movies take place in 2280s or so. TNG takes place in the EARLY 2370s. DS9 and Voyager are in the LATE 2370s. Enterprise is a PREQUEL set in the 2150s showing early space adventures just BEFORE the Federation is founded. All the OTHER spinoffs have varying dates some Just BEFORE TOS and others AFTER TNG/DS9/Voyager

Actuarial Lurker

“ Ahh Kirk, do you know of the Klingon proverb that says revenge is a dish best served cold?” “It is very cold in space.”

Zero Cochrane

This and the second TNG movie are the best

Actuarial Lurker

Still the best of the bunch!

Geoff Walsh

I was hoping for the "Khaaaannn!!" face 😃
