I had the same reaction as George when I saw this in the theater: "That was a great movie, I never want to watch it again, I feel gross." This movie and The Wolf of Wall Street are in very exclusive company in making me feel like I needed to take a shower immediately after watching them to get the ick off of me. I watched this one again to see your reaction and I am both grateful and filled with remorse for that decision.

Derek

TLDR, but I pressed the heart on your comment because of your effort. I intend to read the entire comment later in the week, when I have a day off.

Deadly Ramon

So, I'm only 10 minutes in, but here's another perspective (TLDR comment inbound!). I've actually followed a stringer (the "citizen journalists" who go around doing this work) for more than a year. I live just north of LA, and he would go all over LA on Friday and Saturday nights (he did video editing and other thing during the week), and I'd put on the stream while working on my projects to keep up with what was going on outside here, where I don't like to go (outside, yuck). First of all, it is nothing like the guys who showed up at the crash on the highway in the film. In fact, on dozens (hundreds?) of calls over the year, I think the news maybe showed up one time. That surprised me, TBH. It was like the news never cared to show up to any of these things, even, like, big fires. The movie scene was 100% Hollywood nonsense, as usual. There are other stringers at calls fairly often, sometimes there'll be 5 of them at one scene, and not once has anyone acted even remotely like that. It's super casual, and I learned a ton from it. They don't race up on a scene, and get in the way, and shout "get a shot from this angle!" They park far away (you often can't park close in LA), and walk the rest of the way, not running and out of breath. They stop quite a distance away from whatever's going on. They don't make any noise. They don't interrupt. They don't bother anyone. They say hi to each other, because some are friends, and they tell viewers to go check out the other one's channel. They listen to scanners while driving around, and say "I think we're too far away from the crash. It'll all be cleared out by the time we get there. I'm gonna head toward this structure fire. It doesn't sound very big, but we'll check it out." It's super chill, and not the classic idea of ambulance chasers. Also, most of the time, nothing happens. That was another really big, interesting thing I learned. LA, the most populous county in the country, with 10M people, is surprisingly low key, and uneventful, all year long. The guy I followed would take us all over LA in the many dead times, showing off film locations, like "Nakatomi Tower", where Hans Gruber fell to his death, or the firehouse from the 70s drama, Firehouse. He would find a random, outdoor, free, music festival, and hop out of the car and walk all around, vibing, or a fancy car museum, and show off all the cars, or catch a random drone show. He went to the beach once and filmed one of the SpaceX rockets flying overhead. He went to a park and talked to ducks, and watched some swan-shaped paddle boats. He would drive over the Sixth Street Bridge often, because it was beautiful, and I learned people just park illegally in the right-hand lane all the time to get out and take photos, and make TikTok videos. He grew up in LA, so he had a lifetime of stories to go with all the places we went by. I recognized the opening of this movie, because one day that bridge was dark. It had bright lights that they could change the color of, so they'd theme it often, for things like a Lakers game, or breast cancer awareness month, or to support the Ukraine in blue and yellow, and then, one day, nothing. Just super dark. We saw that a few weeks in a row, so I finally looked it up, and it turned out thieves had stolen something like a million dollars of copper wiring from the bridge. I think it may still be dark, a couple of years later. 30 seconds into the opening of the movie, I said "is he stealing copper?" Nailed it. In fact, I think where he was cutting up that chain link fence was an area we went by one night, and saw kids on top of a car, shooting a music video. I learned stuff like that about my own city all the time through his channel. He went to countless places I've never seen (LA is ginormous, with almost 10M people). And yet, 90% of the time, nothing was happening, no calls, and he was just being an LA tour guide, or taking us all through the blocks upon blocks of people in costumes outside all the clubs at Halloween, and a ton of other things. I learned that LA is way less dangerous than I had assumed, for the 20 years I've lived here. There were many nights, sometimes for weeks in a row, where nothing at all really happened, except some fender benders, or "elevator rescues" (omg, all the time, and it made me remember that I've been stuck in elevators twice in LA; that's the real danger here!). The most fun calls were when someone plowed through a fire hydrant (maybe 3 of those that year?), and we watched two firemen walk in a circle for 20 minutes up to their calves in water, with a 2-story geyser raining down on them, turning a giant T-handle wrench, to very, very slowly reduce the flow until it finally went off. There were maybe 3 calls involving guns all year long, and he would just skip those, not wanting to catch a stray. It was more common that someone out of their mind, maybe high, maybe with a condition, would be shirtless and waving a machete. That happened several times! None of them ever actually harmed anyone that I saw, so even literal machete wielding, shirtless, crazy guys, end up not being all that dangerous here. I find that interesting, too. It made me feel a lot safer here. The cops would just wait for a quiet moment and grab them. I learned that even Skid Row is not nearly as dangerous as I thought, because he would roll through there late at night, and get out to give people food, care packages, feminine care packages, and a bunch of other things he would buy, and viewers of the channel would buy and send him, or pay him to pick up for them. The trunk and back seats were always full of things to hand out, usually near the end of the night. He got out of the car one night, after midnight, in the middle of a really bad area, to roll a person in a wheelchair, who was out cold, back onto the sidewalk, because they were just in the middle of the crosswalk, drunk or high. He checked to make sure they weren't dead. There was no one else around. He left some food and waters in their lap for when they woke up. They pretty clearly lived there on the street. He knew a ton of his regular viewers by name, and thanked them all the time for helping him out. He even threw a big party in LA when he crossed a certain subscriber count, and a bunch of people who had spent a year or more in his chats got to meet up, and apparently had a great time, and he recently had another one. One night, walking to a call, he stepped off a curb, and into a deep puddle, completely soaking his leg, and not long after, while he was filling up at a gas station, a fan rolled up, got out, and gave him a pair of brand-new slip on shoes to wear for the rest of the night. It was really sweet. They tracked him down and rushed him supplies. The channel was just full of nice things like that all the time. Nothing about it ever seemed vulture like to me. A couple of nights he just went out on his electric bike, riding in huge groups of hundreds of people (LA has some cool events). There were maybe 3 calls over the year where it looked like maybe someone had died, and he wouldn't film them. He'd say very quietly, "Oh, shit, I think maybe someone didn't make it here. Okay, I'm not filming that. Damn, that really sucks." Even the viewers didn't feel vulture like. A few did. They'd beg him to film carnage, but he wouldn't. They were the exception, though. Most would yell in chat "Don't show it! I don't want to see it!" It was actually one of the nicest chat rooms I've ever seen. There was never a fight. The mods had the easiest job ever. I had to look up what GTSY meant, because everyone was always saying that to each other in there (good to see you). Most were there to hang out, see the city, see some fender benders, etc, cruise around. Almost all the crashes, no one got hurt. People were just standing around, waiting for police to show up, or talking to police, giving their statement. Even the rollovers, and I learned that LA has a lot of those. He was very often first on the scene, which he would always call out. "Once again, I'm here before the first responders" (even though he gave shout outs to them all the time). That's the kind of thing that can change policy, training, etc., especially because the official LAFD account was very often in there with us! They seemed to use stringers as extra sets of eyes and ears, because they would often get to scenes before the officials, so they could radio ahead what they were seeing through his lens, or even know about things that didn't get called in otherwise. We saw a few crashes that happened right in front of us. There were several calls about a possible arsonist one night, and then he was driving down the highway, to the next call, and saw the woods on fire next to the highway. Then, hundred of meters ahead, another, then another, and another. Then the exit ramp woods were on fire even further ahead, like someone was throwing incendiaries out the window, or maybe stopping to light the grass on fire before moving on. He ended up pulling over and calling in a likely arsonist. One of the fires was under a bridge, so he may have helped save that structure. One night, he said "Oh, shit, that guy's all over that woman. What is he doing?" He didn't film it, but said he thought maybe he was witnessing an abduction, because a guy was dragging a woman by the arm down the street, and then fought with her to get her into a car before speeding off. He said he was hoping it was a couple and a domestic situation, and not a trafficking style kidnapping, but he floored it after the guy, I think calling out his plate number, and it was like a real Hollywood chase, like taking turns way too fast, so much so that cops joined in and pulled our guy over, with a helicopter circling overhead (and chat was like "no! stop the other guy!"). We watched on his interior cam as they dug around his seats and console, looking for whatever. They held him at gun point (behind the car; we could see him out the rear window), as he told them what he had seen. They let him go after about 15 minutes, and one cop seeing the camera and shouting back "I think he's a live streamer!" The cops and firefighters never even noticed the stringers at any of the calls. They didn't care. Citizen reporting is allowed here. And now that guy has moved to Denver, which has way less to report on, so he's just taking his followers on city tours, showing off pretty scenery, bike trails, nightlife locations, etc., and all his old followers are still there, because it was never about the crashes, really. They just formed a weird little community, and they like to hang out still. For me, it was something interesting, and local, to have on in the background as I coded, or edited images or video. For a lot of the others, I think they're a lot of older, lonely folks, who found his channel exciting, and they ended up making friends. This is not to say there aren't some sleazeballs. There always are, in almost everything. A guy he started with was one, and he parted ways with him, but that guy hounded him for years (jealous territorialism), to the point he had to get legal help over it all. I had looked into that guy's channel, too, but he came off right away as a scumbag, so I left. He had a tiny fraction of the followers, because people don't really want to follow a scumbag, I guess. They liked this other guy, because he seemed like a decent person, and he did a bunch of nice things, too, and he was all positive vibes.

Hi guys! :) I'm enjoying myself. My dad's birthday's in January - but mine's in TWO DAYS!! Not one day off, but two! xD <3 hahahaha What the hell Simone?! hahahaha, wow. You're such a dork. lol, you're awesome. xD This movie's pretty dark from what I've heard. I don't think that I've watched this so I'm stoked to be watching this with ya'll on here! :D Good eye, George! Glad that you're catching onto what he's all about right from the start. Though I'm not certain that's all that's going down here. I do agree with your take though! Pretty disgusting behavior. lmao, wow George! You're judgey! xD "His shirt isn't tucked in! THAT MONSTER!" Jake's a good actor. Big fan of him! :) I've been a fan of him for many years. Good eye, Simone! It's LA. :) lol, yeah - Bill Paxton plays older dudes a lot of the time. Jake looks kinda sorta creepy here. Annnd he's a villain. Huh, wow. Alrighty! Hell yeah, Simone! hahahahaha - impressive! That's my guess, George - yeah. He doesn't appear to be in that line of work quite yet and it looks like his fascination begins here. A 211 is a robbery, I think? I'll google to confirm after this wraps up if I remember. lmao - wow! Totally can imagine him as J Jonah Jameson! xD He made it there before the cops - wow! Yeah, no, he's about to fuck with things.. wow! Dude's fucked. Yeesh. This triumphant music is unsettling for sure. I like the way he interacts with others. It makes sense to me. I'm similar to the way he is but farrr less creepy. xD Holy shit - yeah he is Simone! He's mega creepy! She's reasonably upset but yeah.. yikes. I'm not certain that they slept together. WHOA - FUCK. THAT ANGER MOMENT WAS SCARY! George, dude! xD You're paying far too much attention t o his shirt. :P Yup, a 211 must be a robbery. He's all sorts of fucked for doing this, wow. He also touched all sorts of things while in there - the railing for instance on the stairs. I'm thinking that he may run into some trouble for doing that. lmao, at least he was honest when he was asked if he could have gotten more. Now he's asking for more. Ruh roh.. GEORGE!! Dude, you can't say crossfire like that. xD lmao, it reminded me of that terrible toy from the 90's that went by that name. xD lmao, wow - Simone! Silly little bird. :P Jake Gyllenhall's proper fucked in this, yeah. There's zero value with him. Good fucking lord - wow! He's so messed up! Dude's death was kinda weak. His eyes closing like they did, wow. They're both without souls 1000%, yeah. lol I didn't see or get any Kaiser Soze vibes from that walk. That was a movie! Yeesh, wow. I really liked Gyllenhalls's performance. It was so well done. Heartlessly done. The woman's performance was major gross as well and kinda unbelievable at the same time, same as Jake's. Jake was very gaunt in this role, yeah. I doubt that real nightcrawlers are anywhere near as messed up as he was/they were in this. At least I fucking hope so, because damn. I don't watch the news either Simone. Shit's scary gross and depressing. It 100% is doomscrolling but on tv, yeah. Yeah, no thanks on ever watching this again. Isn't something that I'd recommend to others without fully briefing them beforehand. This is not something for anybody that has nervous habits or is already untrusting of police. Wow - definitely a dark film! One of the darkest ones that I've watched for some time now. I think that I feel that way because of how real everything felt. Huge yikes on all that. Thank you both for watching, though! I enjoyed the reaction. :) Oh - also, I began watching this around 11:40 or something so now it's June 2nd. Birthday's tomorrow! FUN WILL BE HAD. xD

Logan Kerlee

Frailty is so good. Unfortunately it never even achieved something approaching cult status so only the ten of us that remember and like the movie would watch the reaction.

guyincognito

Would love to see you guys react to Bill Paxton's directorial debut, 'Frailty', starring none other than the man himself as well as Matthew McConaughey.

jay

Colors (1988) is a very interesting movie.

REDR58

I tried an Uncovered version of a random post here to Airdrop to an AppleTV and it worked fine. I imagine it should work with any other device capable of casting? It also seems like most of the comments are gravitating to the Uncovered version. It might start to get unwieldy but I don’t know how else S&G can do it?

REDR58

What's crazy is think I should have been a cop, but I might have been a bad cop, because I'd be too nice lol. But that made me a good bouncer, I would occasionally be a bouncer at these little gigs some people I knew would throw. And my thing is, I'm cool if you're cool, and if you're not, I will cool you, one way or another (Road House style lol), anyway this cop friend I have at work is more interesting than you'd expect. I hated cops when I was young because they were racist and messed with me for no reason other than I was walking down the street. I was on gang file lol, never been or wanted to be in a gang but the cops put me on file anyway, came up in my background check when I enlisted in the Army. Point is, as Colin Quinn says, a good cop (Irish) should have the listening skills of a bartender and the uncontrollable violence of a nun. 🤣 I would just offer them a toke usually, therefore, BAD COP.

MacGuffinStuff

So I watch the Patreon full version vs the uncovered as it can’t be cast and I don’t want to connect a computer to the TV . I am just curious if comments only get read in the uncovered? Should we comment there for the most community interaction and or getting any kind of potential engagement from the Cinebingers? Just trying to engage in the most favorable way. May have just answered my own query 🤷

SpankTheMonk

End of Watch that's a movie I need to add to my LA crime movie list and your backlog. It's a tough movie but according to a friend who is retired LAPD it's accurate. Gylenhaal and Peña are great together. Learned code 4 from that movie, code 4 means we got it under control, and they'll just show four fingers to the helicopter or whoever to let them know. It's also in Colors.

MacGuffinStuff

Can we imagine how AI generated media on social and media networks/sites/apps without proper vetting will be in the next few years. Especially as the ability to generate on your local vs having to use a major platform- now that is scary 😬. Rick said he was living in a garage 🤷 after he started working with him. I think Jake’s character displays both sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies which is scary and so well acted. Echos of Fight Club in the final video reveal scene.

SpankTheMonk

Anti-hero- ha not even that early in the film (attacks the guard - steals) . he is straight up a bad guy character from get go. Makes sense why explicit media insights more interaction with us, shock media has always led. Untucked to cover a tool he hid in his back pants. Renee Russo’s acting is so good, even just the reactions. When he mentions the triple murder she subtly pulls her lips in almost holding back a more expressive positive reaction. 100% Kiaser Sosce vibes spot on!

SpankTheMonk

Dark movie, just as I recall. Really goes after the soullessness of media and it feels a little personal vis a vis LA. I'm not from LA but I live close enough there's a bleed over effect. In my mind this is what happened to Donnie Darko in the universe where he didn't make that choice, he instead chose to move to LA and become a horrible person, maybe his soul perished when he made that choice. I'm kidding of course. But I can't imagine being even a paparazzo, there are just some things I would never do for money, as expensive as it is here, I'd move. A while ago I remember I commented my ten "LA Crime Movies" and this wasn't on it but probably should have been. You've seen LA Confidential and Training Day and Heat and a few others I think, but a few that you still haven't watched are Falling Down and American ME and Colors. Add them to the backlog lol, man that backlog has to be insane, and keeps growing, and growing, and growing....

MacGuffN'stuff

Both brothers wrote for Andor, but Tony is the principal.

SpankTheMonk

I think Joker succeeded and this succeeded- amazing world where we get both great films.

SpankTheMonk

One of the funny things about watching movies about LA or Southern California is the newscasters, the news anchors are actual news anchors on local affiliates who I'm familiar with, that happens in so many movies. Probably because a lot if not most news faces are failed actors.

Last of the Joehicans

A 211 is, and I only know this because of Heat, an armed robbery in progress. In Heat when they hit the armored car the driver calls in by radio, something like, "211, 211, we're being held up!' Edit: I looked it up to verify, it's California penal code for a robbery.

Last of the Joehicans

That's funny, it is my birthday today lol. I called out from work even though I think I don't have enough sick time to cover it, but fuck it, I was still too drunk to go to work anyway. So I'm just taking the day to recover from my hangover, I got some good Mexican food, my niece's birthday was a few days ago and there's still some left over Tres Leches cake which is my favorite cake. And now I'm just gonna chill and watch this, I've seen it before and was considering watching something else, still trying to catch up with Severance, but I'm glad I watched it today. What a funny coincidence. Doesn't it sometimes trip you out, so many coincidences? Happens a lot to me.

Last of the Joehicans

You saw "modern" Bill Paxton in Edge of Tomorrow.

Max Krause

I've read my favorite review of this years ago: "What taking one online business seminar does to a MFer." A damn good one, just very uncomfortable to watch. I do agree, Gyllenhaal gives a stand-out performance here, and is a protagonist one can really despise. Still carries weight to today, as this movie is a warning about sensationalism and many stories seem constructed for maximum outrage. Of course, people like the director lady and Lou find a place there. Family dinner with news was a staple in our household as well, have not had cable since moving out myself. Some bullshit: no birthdays, doing that thing I want to do (writing a test soon), might get a job opportunity soon :)

Philipp Roensch

For a more heroic Jake Gyllenhaal movie: Source Code or Prisoners

Odd Thomas

A good opposite role for Jake Gyllenhaal. a movie you guys should check out is End of Watch (2012). If you wanna see more of Riz Ahmed who played Rick y’all should check out The Night of (TV Miniseries 2016)

BigGuy209

Yaaaay! Such a good movie. Jake Gyllenhaal is so awesome.

RabidMango

Guaranteed it's a ton of my fellow Patron's birthdays today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem

As great as Nightcrawler is –I have an "antidote" suggestion for this film: George Clooney's "Good Night and Good Luck". I think of it as an "antidote" in that it tells the story of Edward R. Murrow using Television News to help cure our nation of McCarthy-ism. It stars David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow. David Strathairn is one of my all-time favorite actors that was famously in many Johnathan Sayles directed films. "Good Night and Good Luck" was Edward R. Murrow's famous "Sign-Off" saying. David Strathairn was nominated for the Academy Award for Leading Actor for this film. George Clooney only plays "Fred Friendly"... in addition to co-writing the screenplay and directing the film, and being nominated for both for Academy Awards. You can look for George Clooney to win a few Tony Awards, since George Clooney has, I believe, "aged into" playing Edward R. Murrow in the play based on the screenplay on Broadway – as I type. ... ALSO this Broadway incarnation will, on June 7, be performed Live on HBO and CNN. Hmmm... Have you guys ever reacted to a "Live Performance"? I think maybe the June 7th event will be performed LIVE and if you're able you may want to skip the Film (for now) and just make arrangements for CineBinge to React to the June 7th performance of the Broadway Play, "Good Night and Good Luck." (still sussing those details so everyone: DO confirm for yourselves)

Brad Lowry

This film reenforces a great quote (pretty close to exact) by Dr. Christine Northrup: "Don't watch the News: The human nervous system was not built to withstand the sum total of global human misery on a daily basis."

Brad Lowry

Absolutely terrifying film, and a staggering performance from Jakey G. As many have already recommended, you guys absolutely should check out Prisoners, with Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman.

Kaushik Sethunath

So Nightcrawler is directed by Dan Gilroy, but produced by his brother Tony Gilroy who also wrote and directed Michael Clayton but also… ROGUE ONE AND ANDOR! GIVE US ANDOR! GIVE US ANDOR!!!!!!!

djKENTO

I forgot Riz Ahmed was in this. Really like that guy. This is such a compelling film. I've only seen it once before now but it sticks to the memory. Definitely one of Gyllenhaal's best roles.

Śéáń

Terrifying film. I love it. You mentioned wanting to see Jake Gyllenhaal on the other side of a chase as a police officer. You guys should check out End of Watch (2012).

JediLounger

Ah man, I've been waiting for you guys to watch this since I joined. It was worth the wait to be patient

Reid Mclellan

The writer/director for this (Dan Gilroy) also wrote on the show Andor, which was run by his brother (Tony Gilroy), who wrote Michael Clayton. I know that you are all in on Star Trek, so a Star Wars show might be too much, but it is excellent. Also, Dan Gilroy is married to Rene Russo. They meet on the Mick Jagger film Freejack, also written by Gilroy.

dasgrove

FYI an ambulance chaser is actually a term for a personal injury attorney who is always on the lookout for potential lawsuits. It doesn't actually have to do directly with actual ambulances or accidents.

Simone's Coconut Squire

This movie is what Joker wishes it was. A true successor to Taxi Driver. I love this fucking movie and JG gives a great performance

Haye Zeus

Riz Ahmed also doing great voice work in Assassins Creed, The Sandman and Nimona. Won BAFTAs for Sound of Metal.

Philipp Roensch

Fantastic movie. And frightening. Of course Jake Gyllenhaal stands out, but the rest of the cast also delivers amazing performances. For more Rene Russo: In the Line of Fire (1993) Tin Cup (1996) Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) And for more Riz Ahmed: 8-part miniseries The Night Of (2016) The latest movie you've seen Bill Paxton in was Edge of Tomorrow, same year as this one. RIP :(
