Commander Willard Decker here is intended to be the son of Commodore Matthew Decker from Star Trek TOS: The Doomsday Machine episode. The guy that Kamikaze'd the shuttle into the planet destroying machine.

Patrick - Excelsior

"Funny" story regarding folk remedies and George bringing up putting butter or grease on burns. So when I was a toddler my family was camping and my grandfather was transferring the hot coals and ash from the firepit to a bucket, presumably to keep the kids running around safe from danger, well I waddled up and ended up falling hands first into the hot ash bucket. My grandfather snatched me up quick before I completely fell in but my palms were pretty burned and not being close to a hospital, my grandmother told my mom to wrap my hands in sliced potatoes. The idea being the potatoes would absorb the heat and save my hands while driving to the hospital. Once at the hospital, the doctors got one look at my hands and the lovely now cooked potatoes they were wrapped in and called social services who almost charged my parents with child abuse. No permanent damage luckily and the scars are barely noticeable now, most people don't even notice unless I point it out to them. Yay folk remedies :P

Ken

He also does a kinda silly song called, 'Highly Illogical'..

Superpotroast

It's also an interesting role reversal with Admiral Kirk taking command of the Enterprise from Captain Decker this time.

Lincynity

So is Jen Murray. In fact she's ahead of them.

Lincynity

On the subject of the TOS actors ‘musical careers’ you should check out Leonard Nimoy singing the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.

Disciple_of_M

The "USS Make Some Shit Up" by Voltaire is a personal favorite of mine.

So happy you guys are finally watching the movies! RedLetterMedia do a great breakdown with their famous humor of this film, Simone & all ST fans should watch their channel if you aren't already, they have lots of star trek videos, including TNG reviews, must watch for all TNG fans! Simone's excitement at the start of the film was so endearing

Imagine being this much of an asshole

Cinebinge watching "Krull" would be an absolute gem for me. I unashamedly love that film, as it was a really great part of my childhood. I don't care if it is a mish-mash of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, I love how upbeat and earnest the film is. It also showcases very early career appearances of Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane, which is fantastic, as well as later career appearances of Freddie Jones and Bernard Bresslaw. Please watch it Cinebinge, it's great!

Mike FromOz

That's so cute and sweet!

I think it is kind of funny if VYGER transmitted in a code base/schema that couldn’t be parsed and humanity is still in the Next Gen era trying to read the data. Douglas T was from Space Odyssey as Visual Effects Supervisor. Robert Wise is an old school director who used and was familiar with the intro score for sitting in the theater. Also the long talking scene were a staple of older science fiction movies because of limited budget on effects.

SpankTheMonk

Yup, he's a fucktard. Any OG Buffy fans would recognize him as the lead of the WB show that was the lead in to the first 1.5 seasons of Buffy, before it switched to Tuesdays.

Cory Garron

Just here to give support to watching in release order. Another channel (Target Audience) is doing it that way, and they are at the point where TNG and DS9 were both airing. P.S. Josh from TA mentioned Cinebinge in his live stream last week.

Cory Garron

I would say this movie is the closest any Star Trek movie ever came to replicating the feeling of a ToS episode with a big budget. This movie was a success, but it didn't bring in the Star Wars money that Paramount was hoping for. As a result, Paramount took away creative control of the movie franchise from Gene Roddenberry. It turned out to be a good choice, financially speaking. Star Trek II was a massive success, making over 8 times its budget. If it wasn't successful, Paramount might not have made more Trek films and Roddenberry might not have been able to create TNG. The only downside is that starting with Star Trek II, the movies became more about action/adventure stories and we never got a feature film with a headier concept like we got here or in some of the best episodes of Trek on TV. IMO We've still never had a Trek movie that gives us the best of both worlds in terms of action AND sci-fi concepts. That one shot of Decker near the end, where his body is all lit up and the wind is blowing his hair upward? Pretty sure that one shot has been ripped off by SO. MANY. ANIME. 😆 Speaking of Decker, if anybody doesn't already know, do NOT look up any info about the actor that plays him if you don't want your day ruined.

Brandon

Old probe that grows in power from TOS, leisure suits from Star Wars, an endless flight into the middle of a higher life form from 2001, 7th Heaven dude who looks like Luke Skywalker... It had everything! And OMG, as I was writing this, V'GER just zappy zappied Simone! I hope she comes back in computer chips form with all her old memories intact!

Gary Fixler

Can you imagine if they finally made it to the middle of V'GER, looked down into the pit, and it was just f***in' Harry Mudd smiling up at them? "Ah, captain!" OMG.

Gary Fixler

Most of V'GER was actually made of tribbles.

Gary Fixler

"So it is a collector! Star Trek really likes that premise." Have you met nerds, George? They collect everything! 😆

Gary Fixler

I can image the joy and wonder of seeing the ship at such scale and detail for the fans, even now it is awe inspiring. Thank Gene and Robert Wise for this opening. Wonderful 🥺 Yeoman Rand!! They changed the AUs for directors cut to 2 fyi. So this movie has a lot of sexual and birth themes in it as it also represents the crew coming back and Star Trek reviving. Spock and Kirk and Bones get their rhythm again too.

SpankTheMonk

“10 Years!” If you watch Grosse Pointe Blank you will get that. But the crew got older also William Shatner is a stage actor so he brought a lot of that to ToS TV his other roles around the time is more normal tv acting. Now you get the ship departure scene in Galaxy Quest. Android girlfriend would be more accurate. Also this movie and concept is maybe the truest to the discovery and heart of Star Trek more than any of the Star Trek movies, not saying it is the best or my favorite, just that the essence of the Star Trek intro narration is achieved in this film

SpankTheMonk

Hell yeah, hearing the intro theme for TNG in this was great, I still remember when that show first started and a bunch of our parents turned out to be like closet Trekkies, because they loved the original show when they were kids. I remember watching an episode right when TNG started at my best friend's house with his parents and they were more into it than us. I was surprised the trivia section didn't include the fact that YES this movie would not have been made without the colossal box office success of Star Wars, which also spawned the original Battlestar Galactica show and numerous other sci-fi/fantasy/adventure knockoff movies and shows, mostly cheesy but some not all bad in retrospect. 80s kid classics like "Krull", or "The Last Starfighter", both corny (especially Krull) but also really entertaining. But I have to say, I have recommended Battlestar Galactica in the past, and I stand by that, but I am referring to the reboot/sequel show with Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell (Stands With A Fist).

MacGuffinStuff

It's not exactly a remedy but it's something Mexicans and I think other Latin Americans do when a kid gets hurt to make them feel better, your mom or gramma will say, while rubbing the painful spot: "Sana, sana, colita de rana, si no sanas hoy, sanarás mañana" "Heal, heal, frog's little tail, if you don't heal today, you will heal tomorrow." Somehow it always made you feel better.

MacGuffinStuff

One of the biggest things I love about sci-fi like this is how quickly they dock and undock, like it's no big deal. They just walked into a shuttle, and seconds later, it detaches, then they parked it against the Enterprise in a few seconds and walked out onto the ship. If that had been the ISS, it would have been 11 hours just to undock.

Gary Fixler

I've heard of the butter on burns thing, but not since way back in the 80s. We never did it. I don't recall where I heard it. Watching actual doctors online (shout out Dr. Mike), and also helping mom recover from two full knee replacements over the last few years, I learned that most of the time doctors, more and more, actually want you to get up on things that I would always want to rest instead. It's not a hard and fast rule, but like I would think after knee replacement, you'd want to rest a ton. They actually want you up and on it on day one. They want you bending that thing to make sure it doesn't heal up all tight — it's super tight to start out, and any bending is really painful, so they really fight you in therapy to bend it to new limits to get it back to full flexibility. They're so much tougher, and meaner, than I thought you should be. They want weight on it so it heals strong. Etc. That goes for so many things, like back pain, ankle stuff...

Gary Fixler

Not my favorite movie. It's just an episode padded with crew reunion scenes and VFX shots. The uniforms were very much a product of the time (the 70s, when "earth tones" was the biggest thing). TOS movies are a bit of a bell curve, basically the middle ones are the best.

Simone's Coconut Squire

It's hilarious how many people don't know that Friends started that.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Forgot to tell you guys to prepare a glass of fine wine as part as enjoying that show off the new Enterprise REFIT!

Techie (JSC)

Theatrical.

Tyler Foster

Is this the Directors Cut? Or Theatrical?

Stephen Morris

The uniforms in TWOK look fantastic.

REDR58

Excellent details. Only, as far as I know, does The Wrath of Khan have an alternated version, in this case a "Theatrical" and a "Director's Cut" which has about 3 more minutes of footage (and in my opinion, is the better version, as it has some more interesting character stuff). The changes are detailed here: https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=828

REDR58

BS home remedy… EAR CANDLING! this is total nonsense. They claim it will pull infections and ear wax out using the force of the fire pulling air up… The amount of force necessary to draw ear wax against the force of gravity would rupture your ear drum and these ear candles simply do nothing.

djKENTO

Other bits. The Klingon commander is played by Mark Lenard who plays the Romulan Comander in TOS and Spock's father Ambassador Sarek. He had the record for actor who plays more characters/species until Jeffery Combs shattered it... Will Decker is the son of Commodore Matt Decker who appears in the TOS episode The Doomsday Machine in which he sacrifices himself and the USS Constellation to destroy the Doomsday Machine... Back then I commented that I hoped sacrificing oneself to destroy a huge planet killing machine doesn't run in the family... some people got it...

Monica Alarcon

Not entirely sure it was Roddenberry, but yes, the Borg were "inspired" by Doctor Who

Lincynity

Some continuity bits about this movie. It does take place 2.5 years after the end of the five year mission (not necesarilly the end of TOS). There's a novel series called Lost years that detail what happens in this time. Kirk being promoted to admiral and given a desk job, the Enterprise being retrofitted (specially new engines and warp nacelles), Chekov switching to security, Kirk getting married and divorced, Spock retiring from starfleet to go attain Kolinar; a Klingon adopts a cat (long story), etcetera. Now between Star Trek TMP and Star Trek II In Universe there's a time jump of 12 years, keep that in mind. There are books which take place in that time period in which the Enterprise has a second five year mission but of course none of that is cannon but if it hasn't been contradicted then it's valid. Also, please finish the TOS movies (I to VI) before TNG. Thank you.

Monica Alarcon

It is never confirmed on screen but in either a comic or a novel Voyager 6 does indeed contact the Borg Wich helped its evolution...

Monica Alarcon

Prefacing this to say I mean this as advice, not criticism, but one of the most frustrating things about alternate cuts is that it is NOT a good rule to think that the theatrical cut will be most available and alternate cuts will be harder to find. I am not sure if that was the reasoning in choosing the theatrical cut here, but just worth pointing out that it is *always* worth researching the cuts. The Director's Edition of this first Star Trek movie is a good example. When the film was released on DVD, the DVD only included the Director's Edition. Later, they released a Blu-ray, which was only the theatrical edition, because the Director's Edition was prepared in standard def and would have to be completely reassembled to create an HD version. That work was finally done in 2021 or 2022 and a 4K version was released in 2023 that included both cuts, as well as an even rarer third cut that was created for television. On the whole, I think the DE has a slight edge in availability, and I think it is also what the fans probably would've preferred overall. Much more complicated than one might expect! The good news is that while there are some alternate versions for the rest of the theatrical Trek films with the original cast, I think it would be pretty easily advisable to go with theatrical the rest of the way.

Tyler Foster

Also if you haven’t shot your TNG reaction I also recommend watching all the ToS films straight through. But I am happy you got here 🍻

SpankTheMonk

The belief of fans is the odd numbered movies are the weakest, and the even numbered movies are the best. I always felt the first movie (which almost certainly got the greenlight based on the success of Star Wars) became more of a showcase for the special FX (super long shots of the ship and exhaustingly dragging sequences of movement through the entity cloud). The reveal of V-Ger at the end was good, but dialog dragged and the story could have been told in an hour-long TOS episode (and sort of was). It is generally agreed that Star Trek 3 (The Search for Spock) is also somewhat slow with a weaker story, but still better than this movie. Star Trek V is universally agreed to be the worst of the TOS cast movies—throwing ST canon out the window and giving us lackluster acting and directing (Sorry Shatner). The best in my opinion is ST 6, closely followed by 2 and the very fun Star Trek 4. The problem of the costumes/uniforms was noted by the creators, and they changed it for ST 2.

D. T. Nelson

Shame you couldn’t give yourselves a more theatrical presentation setting 😿

SpankTheMonk

When were the Borg first thought up? Easy answer. They were thought up one night when Gene Roddenberry was watching old episodes of Dr. Who and looking for ideas to steal.

Chase Lonnergan

I agree, especially ST V and ST VI really have no ties (or relevant ties) to ST:TNG up to that point. These movies only really benefit from previous movies and relevant ST:TOS shows but really are independent for new viewers to enjoy. And I actually think all TNG movies should be watched in sequence, without considering ST:DS9 or ST:VOY or even ST:ENT. The benefits of not following actual release date with other ST series for movie reaction is momentum to attract subscribers and viewership or more. There may be a little background (e.g, ST VIII with DS9 for a character) but really not necessary.

Techie (JSC)

This is just a suggestion, but I'm not convinced that stopping after the first 4 movies and then getting to movies 5 and 6 in the middle of watching TNG is necessarily the best way for first-timers. It's totally up to you guys, but I'd just watch the 6 movies, then TNG. IMO it's not a big deal if you continue to do it the way you've already intended, but the 6th movie will explain why a certain thing is different in TNG than it was in ToS. I'm being vague for the sake of spoilers, but it's definitely not mindblowing information. It's up to you guys, but I'll be watching along either way.

Brandon

Bad home remedies: Ginger ale for an upset stomach. A teaspoon of real ginger can settle an upset stomach but ginger ale hasn't had real ginger in it for a long time. The carbonation can make your stomach feel worse. The urine on a jellyfish sting still kills me. Funny to think that an episode of Friends probably resulted in a lot of people being peed on when they didn't need to be.

Brandon

Did Star Trek TMP happen because of Star Wars? Yes and no. There was already a new Star Trek TV series in development called Star Trek Phase II. They had done quite a bit of work on it, including story ideas, character creation, designs and artwork. But after Star Wars came out, the studio pivoted and thought a movie would make more money. Much of the work on Phase II became this movie and also formed the basis of early TNG. When did Klingon become a real language? Mostly in a future movie. James Doohan(Scotty) made up the words for this film, then the producers hired a linguist on a future film to turn Doohan's words into more of a real, functional language.

Michael Kemmet

You guys should react to the song "Star Trekkin' across the Universe" before or after one of these movie reactions.

WayneC

For me, The Motion Picture is one of the strongest of the TOS movies, despite the uniforms. I love the slow-burn and how cerebral and grandiose it is, like a popcorn version of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It probably also helps that it was my very first encounter with Star Trek. Voyager 6 was, of course, invented for the movie. The Voyager program only ever consisted of Voyager 1 and 2, and they are still in operation beyond the outer boundary of the heliosphere in interstellar space, the farthest human-made objects from Earth.

Opti_Frog

2001 was from 1968, 11 years earlier.

WayneC

IIRC they were already considering a new show Star Trek Phase II and they had the idea sci-fi movies weren't popular and only 1 in a year would be successful. Then came Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind in rapid succession and they thought "kaching" and changed course to movies. There's more about this movies production issues in the documentary series The Center Seat but it contains a few spoilers previewing future installment s and later episodes as it covers later Trek shows.

Lincynity

I’m still catching up on the episodes, and the uncovereds help that, so hopefully i’ll be caught up by the time they do Khan.

Haye Zeus

theyve said before that the version they watched is from amazon prime so just watch that one. or, watch the uncovered version and you dont have to sync.

robodong

They list the movie runtime as longer than the theatrical cut (2 hr 12 min) and shorter than the 2hr 16min director’s edition (the version most people have access to). So no matter what version I use the movie will go out of sync which is always frustrating. And I was so looking forward to this reaction.

D. T. Nelson

Funny you should mention it, as someone has made a video version of this on youtube which uses Star Trek: TAS for the visuals, and it's really great! Check it out here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXWEM4gZhg4

Mike FromOz

I am hoping you reverse polarity on the watch order and do the Star Trek I to Star Trek VI movies before TNG.

WayneC

William Shatner's cover of "Common People" is actually really good.

dc

what do you mean what year? this movie only has 1 release date lmao.

robodong

One of my favorite urban legends is that carrots improve eyesight. This was a deliberate myth created by the British in World War II to keep radar secret from the Germans.

dc

I believe they are watching the theatrical cut.
