As a big Trek fan, I am one of those who feels this one just gets boring at times. And it's not because I need an action-packed adventure always. The shows are often at their best when they are exploring ideas, etc. I just find something off with this one, and just think it moves too slowly and loses some of the fun TOS had. And going from the colorful series to all gray everywhere doesn't help. I don't hate the movie, it's just not one I'm that excited to watch.

To answer George's question re: the timing of this movie with respect to Star Wars: originally, it was going to be a TV shows called Star Trek: Phase II. However (IIRC), yes - the success of Star Wars contributed to that project being abandoned in favor of movies.

Has anyone warned Simone that she might tissues for some of the Trek films?

Many consider the even number films, 2,4,6 to be the good ones and the odd numbered film the bad ones, but that is unfair. 1 is decent but suffers from rewrites and production issues. (No movie camera on the bridge due to technical reasons) 3 is also decent but suffers compared to2. 5? 5 is bad. 2,4,6 do have one thing in common, Nicholas Meyer wrote on all 3 and directed two of them.

I agree with you, it's been 2.5 years since Kirk "flew" a Starship, not 2.5 years since TOS.

One of the derisive nicknames for this film is "Where Nomad has gone before."

To answer your opening question about whether this movie exists because of "Star Wars", the answer is yes-and-no.
Other comments have already explained that they were working on a TV series "Star Trek Phase II", which ultimately failed to get off the ground. But when "Star Wars" hit it big, and Phase II never got going, they decided to take what they had of Phase II and turn it into a movie to cash in on the new sci-fi boom. So a lot of the ideas were already there and independent of SW, but SW is what gave them the push to make a film and not chuck it all in the trash when they hit their roadblocks.
The cast HATED the uniforms in this movie. Not even just the look, they were apparently very uncomfortable and required help from another party to go to the bathroom. The main cast literally refused to return for the sequel unless they were redesigned.
Regarding the invention of the Klingon language, this was its first appearance, but it wasn't a "full" language here. They only invented the sounds used on-screen here. Afterwards, using these sounds as the basis, the language was developed over the following years. It is "official", and shows up occasionally in future movies and episodes, but it definitely gets its most usage amongst fans (Who have translated whole books into Klingon).

There is SO much to say about this film,... and no doubt others will, so I'll bite my tongue and just say the story BEHIND this movie - and the resuscitation of the franchise - is arguably more juicy and dramatic than anything that actually appeared ON screen. I own SO many versions of this movie - from the original cut on laserdisc, RCA CED videodosc & VHS. Plus the "extended" TV edit (also on laserdisc) to the Directors Cut DVD & finally the 4K version. Paramount got their money's worth from me.

At some point, this movie acquired a bit of a bad reputation - undeservedly IMO. For me, Trek is always best when itβs about ideas and values, not necessarily when itβs about villains and action (though it can be good at that, too) - and this movie definitely delivers.

Star Trek II, III and IV are known as the Star Trek Trilogy, also Star Trek II is known as the best Star Trek Film

The movie was (and is still) considered a letdown by many, and one of the weaker films.
But honestly I think the biggest problem with this movie was with audience expectations: coming right after Star Wars, people expected swashbuckling action, not a slow-burn, more cerebral plot.
Watching it back now, it's a much stronger film than people give it credit for. I love the grandeur and pomp and circumstance of seeing the Enterprise again after so long, and on the big screen.
The Voyager reveal is one of the coolest moments in the franchise.
Even the uniforms have grown on me a bit. They're *so* 1970s, and they don't try to hide it. Maybe someday they'll be considered cool again!

Just so you kids know, the Klingon language was invented for the movies and one of its creators was James Doohan, who was a trained linguist.

Btw, quite a few concepts from Phase 2 were used during TNG, including but not limited to the relationship between Troi and Riker and a Vulcan exploring humanity which was the impetus for Data.

I think the two-year period they referenced was to the time since Admiral Kirk had commanded a ship, not two years since TOS ended. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

George, some think that the odd number ones among the first 6 are the weaker ones. I do not think that myself. There is only one movie that I think is bad of the first 6.

There was a Star Trek TV show in development since 1975 called Phase 2. This story is based loosely on the pilot episode of that show.
Btw, the show was cancelled when Paramount Television went under, not because of the movie.

This would never work, right? These shows all assume you've watched (to some degree) the previous series. All the callbacks wouldn't register at all.
