Why is he called Dr. No? Because he didn't spend six years in evil medical school just to be called Mr. No!

Regarding Simone's question as to what "Dr. No" stands for: it is literally his name. Dr. Julius No.

Honestly Dr No was one of the worst Sean Connery Bond films.
-From Russia with Love
-Goldfinger
-Thunderball
-You Only Live Twice
-Diamonds are Forever
are much better.

Supressors (silencers) are actually mufflers. If you've ever heard a car without a muffler you can apreciate the difference. Used with .22 rimfire cartridges what you hear is primarily the hammer dropping. For larger calibers the noise is considerable and not like John Wick.

Things get overexplained alot now adays. So anything less feels very 'without context' by comparison.
This is maybe a little mysterious even for the time but its a spy movie, its ment to be a mystery.
An assassination, followed by an attack on a spy office to recover info before it get to higher up in the intelligence world durring the cold War and the space race. The small detail of not turning off the radio in conjunction with a missed check in from an agent causes a dispatch of a licensed to kill spy to investigate.
The missing man was last known to have asked about rock samples from the local millionaire recluses island. Bond survives multiple assassination attempts that would have silenced most anyone else and stays on track to find out why dude was high jacking rocket launchs.
If anything the subject matter is getting so dated most people don't understand the underlying tensions of the cold war, technology from the 60s and the social impact of the space race and as such the stakes feel soo low compared to things that come out nowadays, especially with the more relaxed pace movies had back then.
There is a weird juxtaposition to look past to appreciate this for what it was. Honestly if I didn't watch this as kid in the 90s with my parents I might not be as receptive as I am now for it.

So, on a handgun with subsonic/low velocity ammo, a silencer/suppressor will generally make a gun sound like a very loud hand clap, or like dropping a book on the floor. It's still loud, but not nearly as loud as a gunshot. The thing in movies where people nearby or in the next room can't hear it is kinda crap.
Once at a range I shot an MP5 with the kind of suppressors the military use on it. It was weirdly quiet. Most of the sound there is actually the action of the gun resetting.

A lot of older movies seem to have this weird structure for the story, where for a while it seems like stuff is happening for no or unknown reasons
