Star Trek the Animated Series: 113-116

Comments

This was a new animation house doing this series. That saved money. Other experienced animators were already booked. George is right that the basic animation - and reusing shots over and over again, like Kirk sitting in the command chair, chin in hand - couldn't be too elaborate. However, this pioneered a new way of drawing animation. So it was ground-breaking.

George is exactly right about the recording sessions. All the actors recorded separately, as their schedules permitted.

I really like the Kzin and the stories set in Larry Niven's Known Space, and I really like Star Trek, but I am not a fan of trying to add the Kzin to Star Trek. The history of humanity, types of technology, etc., are just too different in each universe. But if you want some great scifi stories, the Man-Kzin Wars are really good. There are 15 anthology books with short stories and novellas, and also a few novels. Some things can feel dated, and a few of the stories aren't great, kind of like Star Trek, but overall it's really good science fiction. On a side note, apparently there's a guy in charge of coloring things in the animated series who refused to do what anyone told him to or something like that? He's responsible for the Kzin having pink space suits, he wouldn't change it no matter who tried to get him to change it to another color. Really not a good Kzin look, lol. He seemed to like the weird pinks and greens and blues that you see in a lot of episodes. And one last note, supposedly the cat lady M'Press is a species/race related to the Kzin, kind of like how Vulcans are related to Romulans.

Please don't watch the last 6 episodes in the normal order. Watch episode 2, then the first 7 minutes of episode 4, the last 8 minutes of episode 3, then episodes 1 and 6 simultaneously on 2 screens, and then the rest in reverse order, played backwards. No reason.

George, Simone! My shoes are full of sand!

They have one sound effect for a creature roaring, and they play it over and over again. I think it's the same one battle cat used to always use, too: https://youtu.be/EInBaZDKf-Y?t=20

Weird hearing "widdershins" in ST. The transmogrifying gun told the alien to "twist my widdershins until you reach the null position." Widdershins is an old, Scottish term for against the sun's direction, or counterclockwise. I don't think it was used correctly here. Maybe if it were "twist ME widdershins..."

There is an extended edition of Star trek VI. I had it on VHS but can't find it digital.

"Vandalan, one does not simple walk into the Mad Planet"

I just learned (and mentioned it on another reaction) that they recently- like this year released a 4K version which is pretty much the Directors cut but with cleaned up effects shots and such.

Star Trek Day! Woohoo πŸŽ‰

Nice Dreams is okay, I'd say it rounds out a trilogy, but the rest are kind of shit, until Cheech went on his own and made Born In East LA which is both hilarious and weirdly prescient now, because I literally fear leaving the country because they might not let my brown ass back in. That's the premise of BIELA, he's a Chicano from California who forgets his wallet and gets deported in an immigration raid. And they did this before, back in the Depression, they literally just went into Mexican neighborhoods and grabbed everyone they saw and deported them with no due process, citizens and veterans and all. History repeats, that's no bullshit. "Mi Familia" is a great movie about a Mexican then Chicano family who came up all throughout that time, highly recommend. Add it to the list, un favorcito.

Now I wanna know if there's a strain called Cannabis 3, because they apparently saw a lot of things on Cannabis 3. That's that Federation grade weed, no wonder they're so peaceful in the future. We're on a I forget how many years mission to see some cool shit and spread chill vibes, where no Head has gone before. Speaking of which, forget the polls, just watch Cheech and Chong's first two movies: Up In Smoke and Next Movie. You don't need to be high to laugh at them, if you've ever been high you'll get the jokes, but it doesn't hurt either 😈

Definitely watch the director's cut for the first movie (The Motion Picture). πŸ––

Being so close now to starting the TOS movies may I strongly suggest you watch the Director's Cut of Star Trek 1. I believe that is the better and more importantly the preferred version by most people plus that is the copy most owned. That of course is just my opinion so perhaps a poll to determine the best version to react to? Star Trek 2 does have an extended or directors cut but the difference is minor, perhaps one or two scenes. I just looked at the runtime of YouTube's regular version and it is basically the same as Prime's extended version which I don't understand unless YouTube's version is also extended and they didn't indicate that. I would recommend the theatrical version but again a poll might be best? No concerns for Star Trek 3-6 as I believe only theatrical versions exist for them. Finally you could consider doing the JJ Abrams reboot movies after the TOS movies and before TNG. Yes they came out years later but they do deal with the TOS crew and I can think of only one very small spoiler they have for TNG which you will most likely forget when you get to that point watching TNG months later. Again perhaps another poll? My oh my, I am in a poll mood today...

The Trek movies are where it's gonna be at its best!!!! :)

Waiting patiently lol

StonyD

The movies are the my absolute favorite stuff from Trek!!!

Brent bmc_comix

Honestly I hope you do 3 episodes each week for season 2 because 6 at once is too much, even for me... It's fun but I'm so excited for you to go trough the six Star Trek movies so we can close the Kirk era... And because I LOVE the movies. I had them on VHS and I watched them over and over...

Monica Alarcon

What's Oblivion? Do you mean the Tom Cruise movie? (Just kidding, I am aware of the Elder Scrolls games, though I have only played Skyrim)

D. T. Nelson

Should be a nice explosion in popularity once you hit TNG.

Gryff

We just have to slog through 6 more of these episodes til we finally get to the movies!

The Kzinti and the stasis boxes are an invention of Larry Niven, in his Known Space universe, which includes the RingWorld novels and the Man-Kzin Wars books. It's a really lore-heavy universe. I really recommend it. Also, Larry Niven wrote the (in)famous article Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex.

Waiting patiently...
