It is one thing to be guided by the narrative along the path of discovery as it unfolds; it is another to be strung along with the carrot and stick to the end. To me the pace was used to take opportunity to embellish upon the subtler feel and tone of what was being left unsaid yet still understood. This way the more intense and touching scenes could have more impact, after having been lulled the beauty into a sense of serenity.

Its funny that his character never really changed, he was just not as ornery as the main villains.
