Sounds Like Nonsense To Me

I am also prejudiced against serifs. 😂

Don’t Panic 🟢

Call of Doom-ty XD

enchantedsleeper

I was about to ask if CoD was College of DuPage and then I remembered Coffee of Doom and went all facepalm on myself.

Carol Metzger

My sister led me to her, and now I cannot get enough of Elle. I don't hate Garamond, but I'm pretty sick of it, and, frankly, there was nothing wrong with Times NR, and if it ain't broke why did they "fix" it?

Carol Metzger

NYEH HEH HEH!

wingwhacker

Cantilever! Cantilever!

enchantedsleeper

Comic Sans is to fonts what Papyrus is to movie posters—technically functional, but universally mocked for its overuse in the wrong places. Sure, it was meant for comics, but slapping it on a professional presentation is like wearing Crocs to a black-tie event. It's not about the sans, it's about the comic. If readability were the only metric, Wingdings would be in the Louvre by now.

Armin

Truth be told, I play hell trying to tell a good many of them apart.

OldGoat

I was using Bembo to be a maverick but I may have to start using Palatino.

OldGoat

Those AIs sure are crazy types :p

Ktulu

So,.. is she living with them, like a Pseudo Daughter?

Darnel D Cooper

Mogwai Poster!

Michael Voorhis

The fervor here makes me feel SO seen & SO very much amongst my kindred. LOL

Melissa Wilson

I could be wrong, but I think you’re both right. His name is Peter Algernon & he’s a volunteer life coach. He helps keep Liz in line, when The Librarian & Consort of Caffeination are both otherwise occupied.

Melissa Wilson

F’real!

Melissa Wilson

And I am totally with Hanners on Serif-induced anxiety

Melissa Wilson

IKR?

Miyaa

I have identified the serif font as Garamond Premiere Pro and the sans serif font as Helvetica Neue. Your font views may vary. Also “cantilever.”

Miyaa

That shit would totally break my brain.

Melissa Wilson

Hol up. I need these coffee mugs in my life.

Hawkeye

"Are you trying to give us all caps lock?!"

Krista Elliott

100% this

David Durant

Comic Sans gets a bad rap. It's a good font for its intended purpose and for a lot of other purposes. It's my distinct impression that the entire reason most people hate on it is some mixture of "it has comic in its name" and "they can get away with it". Yes, it is a sans font and deserves any anti-sans sentiment as much as any other sans font. Well, OK, Comic Sans is one of the most readable sans fonts, so a lot of them deserve it more. But Comic Sans gets dumped on because it's for a medium that is not as well regarded as it should be, and I truly feel like people in this particular forum who hate on it should be ashamed of themselves because clearly they feel that at least some comics are worthwhile, so something with comic in its name is not automatically worthless.

Some Ed

Elle Cordova crossover incoming? :)

Dan Isaacs

These last two strips make me realize why you're currently addicted to Liz. I love her.

Dave Stebbins

I do realize that could possibly require a new class of font, the mixed serif class.

Some Ed

Hannalore does not strike me as the sort of person who properly avoids things that make her anxious. Rather, she improperly avoids them. Which I feel rather well explains a mix of serifs and sans serifs. I'm a little surprised that she didn't go with a font that serifs inconsistently - that is, some of the letters that could have them do and others that could have them don't. Maybe still others have some of the serifs they could have but not all of them. Like maybe capital I is missing the top left serif, just to make it a little more distinct from 1, and the bottom right serif to make it distinct from lowercase l.

Some Ed

Dang it, I came here to say that...

strngbirdx@gmail.com

"Fanzine Made Of Flesh" sounds like something right out of QC...

Leak

I'm not good enough at identifying typefaces to say, but it's a mix of serif and sans-serif depending on the section. Which is interesting since Claire says that serifs make Hanners anxious. Perhaps it is a recently acquired anxiety. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4633 https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5033

I think it was Palatino.

@Phillip Masters • May you succeed in your fight!

Complaining.... is her passion

Brittany Huckey

At my work I used to write and circulate an informal company newsletter. After our company's MD complained (jokingly) about my use of Calibri for the email (he was an Arial die-hard), I started doing every newsletter in a different font to wind him up, which meant that each one was followed by font-related jokes and banter. It was a fun time (until I eventually started running out of readable fonts to use). I wonder what font Hannelore favours for the CoD employee newsletter...

enchantedsleeper

Various QC gremlins do this, such as Marigold 😄

enchantedsleeper

His name's Algernon, but he's pleased that you noticed him 😄

enchantedsleeper

Cool. Yes. Doesn't work with every font, but it's still a neat trick.

Philip Masters

Personally, I'm intermittently fighting to have my next book set in Baskerville. (Seriously. It's about context.)

Philip Masters

WAY back in college, we were taught that serif is better for reading large blocks of text (i.e. "you don't have to use Times New Roman for your papers, but PLEASE do not use Arial". Kills me that sans-serif is the default for everything now (including MS Word).

Matt Pedone

I love how today's comment section has been devoted mostly to fonts.

Hugh Eckert

At least it's not Papyrus font

Vinny

Victor Santiago is displeased

Ethan Searls

You are all wrong for not loving Garamond. Non-lining numeral figures for life!

David Grimes

Highly recommend ElleCordova and her font skits... :) https://youtube.com/shorts/j7SByXWWVzU https://youtube.com/shorts/diN5s8M8MCA

Armin

God no, BookBeard.

Miyaa

@Opus • So are you asking Santa for a llama next Christmas?

Miyaa

Okay, question: what’s an example of magazine style typeface?

Miyaa

The journals of the American Physical Society are set in Times Roman (not Times New Roman).

Jon Wilson

@David Paul • Nah, Times New Roman admitted brazenly to Comic Sans that they “struck down Helvetica.”

Miyaa

Her laptop carry does resemble a hoodie from that angle. 💯

Opus the Poet

But I did not shoot the dyslexie.

Opus the Poet

it can only be "one"...

allanfranta

Garamond IS awful

Salodni Ikkis

Nope, but it did not affect my ability to perceive the intended meaning of the sentence :D Copying to Notepad++ and converting all to uppercase quickly flushed out the impostor, though.

Orlet Soir

I bet it sounds like gobbledygook.😊

Opus the Poet

Courier 😝

Opus the Poet

You'll both be going to Helvetica for those puns.

David Paul

Honestly, not until I used the "read aloud" feature.

David Paul

That's a bit of a slog, but it does illustrate what I was trying to say about letters that require stopping and using context to figure out what they are like if a word has double lower case "l" like llama or a capitol I followed by a lower case l like if the word "Illustrate" comes at the start of a sentence, and to completely blow people's minds give them a subscription to Illustrated llamas newsletter. That's a lot of vertical strokes in close proximity.

Opus the Poet

I think if he introduced an espresso machine to Cubetown without a good long runup, people would die. This society needs to adjust gradually :)

Stephen Wells

Fontifex Maximus.

Stephen Wells

She hates the historical figure, the typeface, AND the fictional publishing house in "Foucault's Pendulum", just to make sure.

Stephen Wells

...but I did not shoot the Calibri?

Stephen Wells

He's right though, the wrong font can destroy readability or change the tone of your document. For instance Courier to Comic Sans. Never use Comic Sans for a document that needs to be taken seriously. On the other hand Courier is the epitome of "Serious Documents".

Opus the Poet

I'm the opposite, I dislike sans serif fonts. Knowing the difference between an upper case I and a lower case l greatly increases my reading speed and comprehension. Having to stop and parse out what a lone character is supposed to be or the Ieading character of an unfamiliar word frustrates me. For instance did anyone catch my substitution of one letter for an identical appearing letter earlier in the comment?

Opus the Poet

But it's so pretty! 😍

Abhayakara

Yes

Jonathan

Don't even get her started on Geneva.

Sammitch

The Fourth Wall, like distance, lends enchantment.

Mark

Pretty sure Liz would be pedantic enough to say "typeface". 😄

Steve DeGroof

They should petition Jeph to change Liz’ speech bubble font to comic sans!

Andrew

From orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Andrew

I hope someone at Cubetown studies Oontzology

Of all the esoteric organizations in this comic's lengthy history, I do believe this is my absolute favorite. Also I hate Garamond too.

Ktulu

I love how Liz has a serious tell for when she is being thoughtful and when she is going to be a serious bitch. Her pupils are large when she is thoughtful but slitted like a snake when she is hitting bitchmode.

Mark Nach

I love Liz so much. Partly because I don't have to deal with her in real life

Bagge

I talk like this too but a part of me really hates the "actually kind of interesting".

Anders Rapp

New Mogwai song coming later today IIRC...

Leak

But how do you apply CSS to a magazine after printing?

Leak

They are ugly, and no amount of possibly improved readability makes up for it. Sans-serif geometric typefaces all the way.

Jonathan

Garamond is a book face; it looks slightly out of place in a magazine. And most versions are terrible when viewed on screen.

Erin Halfelven at BigCloset

She didn't strike me as someone who doesn't know how to apply user css to a site

Robert Heinig

Also changing subjects… can we get Mood™ coffee cups for purchase?

Miyaa

Futura or Hot Dog. WAG if international …

Sparky

I hate the fact that the Garamond typeset on Monotype goes for at least $135 for one variation and that there are full sets of these similar fonts that can go for up to $350 or more. And the free set fonts you can download are either terrible looking or basically just malware.

Miyaa

Hey, look! The Mogwai poster found a new home :)

legobil

They know what they did.

Rob Vary

As someone who started coding in the 1960s, I prefer a monospaced font with discrete glyphs for computer related information. Otherwise, I chose the font on a case by case basis. "l" and "I", "rn" and "m", "0" and "O", even "5" and "S", and "2" and "Z" can be confusing in some fonts.

Charles Hirst

Why would you hate serifs? I hate sans serif.

Normal Moniker

Liz did not strike me as a sans serif lover

Jasper

garamond is ok liz is a sourpuss

Cozy

Cozy

My grandparents fought a world war so I wouldn't have to live in a serifdom.

I shot the serif...

Sleepy John

I do enjoy how her slit pupils appear whenever she gets ... grumpy, while believing she is actually evil

dcy665 .

She's just picky about which Garamond works for anything. There's a lot of 'em.

Maurice Kessler

I mean if you use anything else are you really even a scientist

Magic Chopstick Games

Computer Modern or GTFO 😤

Magic Chopstick Games

Blame typewriters for that one. Most typewriters simplified the keyboard by combining those two characters into a single key. (and some other combos as well).

Hurley

The colophon.

Hurley

They should switch to comic sans just for her.

Daryl Sawyer

The true foundation of QC!

William Cole

Depends on your eyesight and brain glitches (much the same as dark-mode vs. light mode). Dark mode gives my astigmatism fits, and most sans serif fonts add to the astigmatic blur, and somehow manage to add to the rotational dyslexia besides.

Elyse M. Grasso

She is so real for that.

Capital i and lowercase L drive me nuts when they're indistinguishable!

Mad Marie

I love getting to the end of a book and finding an entire page dedicated to information on the typeface used in that edition.

Mad Marie

She writes with a fontain pen.

BobC

I used to have a job that published regular references to a specific book. That particular book had been published with something that looked darned close to Garamond, so we used Garamond when quoting it. It just looked plain wrong in any other font, but it was hard to tell why at first.

Mad Marie

Goudy Old Style fan here.

Mad Marie

Thanks!

Drazi

Font choice matters! Here's proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZBC7maS0X4

BobC

Aaaaaaand now I have Tom Lehrer’s “Vatican Rag” circulating in my brain. :)

Noah

Verdana is my main font (it's a sans-serif font that has serifs on capital I. I teach chemistry, so this is very important!) But if I want to use a serif font, my go to is Garamond (Times New Roman just isn't for me.) Sorry Liz!

Trina Short

Wait. Does she hate the historical figure Garamond or all the associated fonts and style?

PatronTurtle

I had a real type-setting crush on Bernhard Modern for the _longest_ time. I still think it's ridiculously cute. Who can resist smol body, taaaaaaaaaallll risers, and angular serifs. Very twenties (nineteen-twenties, that is, flappers and bathtub gin, jazz, the Charleston, and the rise of authoritarianism in Italy and Russia). Why do we always bring back the worst parts? I mean, okay, bathtub gin is iffy, but how could you choose rising authoritarianism over Bernhard Modern? People are weird.

Amelia Lewis

Holy shit, I just googled Garamond. Not only did google produce search results, *it changed the font of all the results to Garamond as well!* I tried it with comic sans and times new roman, and those worked too! Has this always been a feature?

Creeperkry

And instead of Dora's preferred goth colors, they made them pink! No wonder she sent them all to Canada.

Matthew Borus

But she did not shoot the Dyslexie.

Dean Reilly

oh wow, she's fontist! ~<3

Mitsuki Ayane

Comic Papyrus with just a sprinkling of Wingdings.

BookBeard

I try to use serif fonts only in decorative ways, such as the name of an event on a flyer (the biggest text on the page) and not the body text

djellafine

It is ugly as sin, and there are other fonts designed for dyslexia that are also free to use. But if that was the only reason why people were using it, I could forgive it even if I hate how often designers just don't bother to make pretty things that are also accessible. For whatever reason people who aren't dyslexic use Comic Sans so much. It's a favorite of people doing "desktop publishing" because it's "cute and fun". No it isn't, it's an inconsistent ugly mess. It's possible to make a font that has each character visually distinct without making it ugly.

Amy ☣

Should have used a sans-serif font, you fool! https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5084

BookBeard

I was kinda hoping the menu would have something like "Decaf Coffee for Decaf People" and "Latte Fear Satan" on it.

schmod

I think (at least for me) the hate for Papyrus is just that it got way overused during a specific time period so now looks dated and kind of amateurish (because that was back when a bunch of us were still learning to internet)

djellafine

Nope, I copied and pasted, it's a company name

Clark Wells

Liz stans for Computer Modern

schmod

I suspect you're missing the l in accessible in that URL...

Am Queue

The "Fontiff" if you will. :)

Summer

So she is the font of all knowledge?

Summer

Comic sans is really very good for people with dyslexia. I honestly don't know why it has such haters. Papyrus isn't awful either, though I don't know if it has benefits.

Am Queue

I can't decide if Marten forgetful, or completely prioritized for modern business brand-building (create brand awareness, then come up with a product).

ValdVin

Dora had a box of them sitting in the basement for ages. Apparently they screwed up her order and printed the word "doom" backwards.

BookBeard

Serifs suck

SpookyPenguin

Let's hear it for Franklin Gothic Medium Condensed. Not for everything, just when you want style.

Donna Flint

In fairness, if you already have the assets made, it takes like... 5 minutes to send it off to a print on demand service to make small batches of customized merch.

ACasualObserver

Don't feed her after midnight.

Matthew Borus

So he's made branded mugs, but he doesn't have an espresso machine? Marten!!

Matthew Borus

I hope their studies bear fruit, they're analyzing something that's an increasing problem.

Scott Haley

Aww, Martin brought his [squints] framed white square to Canada.

Veronica Jane

Been a while we’ve had a good Mogwai shout-out. I stumbled across Dyslexie because one of my tablet-reading apps kept defaulting to it. Now I miss it when it’s not available.

Magic Beans

I think her complaint is, how you say in French, implausibe.

Jeff Norman

(Shhhh!)

Ursus Ridens

All this font talk is great, and I'm gonna look up some of them later, but first things first: Is Liz drinking a free coffee?

ValdVin

Somehow I felt that her complaint was something minor but this is so much funnier.

Hawkeye

It's actually more subtle than that, but decorative serifs and ornaments can make fonts less accessible For example, see https://accessibe.com/blog/knowledgebase/ada-compliant-fonts

Clark Wells

Garamond has a place, just not in anything I produce. My time in London in 1975 left a mark that persists to this day...including a preference for san serif fonts that hew tightly to Johnston's shape and style.

Robert

Wait really? Never knew this

Egos

I actually prefer Palatino Linotype to Garamond.

Lawrence David Thompson

Serif fonts are not friendly to folks with certain reading related learning disabilities, so I get Liz's point

Clark Wells

https://sites.google.com/a/tudza.com/tudzasplace/comics/i-shot-the-serif

Tudza

Is it weird I'm finding Liz cuter and cuter? Not in a bad way. Just...like a puppy.

Joel Bateman

Serifs! Throw off your chains! Bow no longer under unjust rents and corvee labor, not to mention droit de seigneur, by the noble landlords, serifs of the wo....oh wait. "Serifs." Nemmind.

Ursus Ridens

So the walls aren't as bare as first thought.

Doc Gumby

Dammit; came here to make [effectively] this joke

Demonac

Font-wise I have a soft spot for Bell Centennial, not because I like using it but because it was developed to solve physical-world printing problems, including tweaks to minimize/eliminate ink spreading when printing quickly on crap paper. I’m not a typography nerd, but I am an intersection-of-physical-world-and-digital-world nerd. This technically predates the the digital world, but it’s adjacent enough that it tickles my neurons in the same way.

Noah

When you're right, you're right.

Doc Gumby

I LOVE Garamond, but I'm trying to move away from it as sans serif fonts are more easily read. It's hard to give up, tho...

chiralitycounts

You are not alone Liz. Garamond sucks.

Thomas Baxter

Don't think I didn't notice you positioned the gremlin directly in front of the Mogwai poster XD

Wynn Donivan

Oh Lawrence! Massive points.

Claudia D.

Down with Garamond!!!

JMK

I personally like a typewriter font

Hope

Ooh I'm early! Typo in Liz's first line: missing second L in "plausible"

Zofia

I'm more a fan of Bodoni, although it's not so good for body text.

fluffy

I'm mostly chill with fonts as long as it's not Comic Sans, Papyrus, or the unholy abomination that leaves both in the dust by combining the worst of the two.

Amy ☣

GARAMOND IS THE BEST FONT THERE IS!!!

Paul Higdon

She follows Elle Cordova.

Taigan

I hate that I understand her reason

Michael

omg the mogwai poster lives

Skye

Ok, but I *love* serifs. I always change my documents to be TNR instead of Arial or Calibri, and I use a skin on AO3 that changes the font for me

Jamieson

Something tells me it was originally in Comic Sans.

Simpin4Holo

yeah idk I think liz crossed a line here, she might be TOO problematic now 😔

Lorelei

Garamond isn't terrible, but it feels overused.

Carl-Eric Menzel

The society of nonsense research sounds like they do vital work. Id love to be educated by them.
