Directember: She's Totally Playing Into It

The whole "it sounds like they were having Sexual Times but actually they were not" gag is as old as time, but I like the little spin I put on it in this strip. Also man, I used to draw Hanners looking a lot more unhinged than she does these days. Combination of her being in a better place now and also my art looking less weird and askew, lol. I do like how shaggy Marigold's hair looks in this strip though. She's more floofy these days but I think the hikkikomori hair was a cute part of her design back then. And Angus is there. TBH I'm glad I wrote him out, both for what it did in terms of the story (esp. Faye's development) and also because I just think he's kind of smarmy now. Never trust a guy who wears bowling shirts outside of a bowling alley.

I never much cared for Angus. Call it gay bias, but Bubbles all the way.

Jaune Jaymes

Her personality shift is something I attribute to her finally getting her meds balanced, allowing her real personality to get through.

Opus the Poet

Right???

Kevin Hicks

Angus is fine. But good enough for Faye long-term? Nah.

James

I vote for a cameo appearance from Angus. Not actually in the strip, but we see him on television in the background.

Taigan

Ooof, I feel totally seen.

George Passantino

Gonna name my next Stardew Valley farm “Allosaurus Farm.” (Stardrops will smell like Hanner’s apartment after hourly cleaning.)

Miyaa

To confirm Jeph’s musing on #1492, it did not.

Andrew

All written out QC chars get sent to the same farm. They sit around the phone, hoping to be called up again.

Andrew

Everyone from strip 1000 onwards is "the new cast" :)

Stephen Wells

That's because we're old now. 😅🤣

Carrie

Angus’s swarminess was also how I viewed Sven and Sven is slowly reforming himself into someone different. And then there’s Ahn.

Miyaa

Here I am, still faithfully waiting for Sara's return.

RaptorShadow

So he got eaten by an Allosaurus then?

Mark

Over the years, QC has had many funny moments, many touching moments, many inspiring moments, many insightful moments, and many fart jokes. But the #1 best moment in the entire strip's history is when Angus left it. He started as an combative stalker, suddenly became everyone's favorite guy to hang out with (without doing anything to earn it), and then took a job a couple of states away without even consulting with his significant other beforehand dropping it as a fait accompli and then bailed on the relationship instantly when Faye was not fully enthusiastic and on-board immediately. The only two good things that came of Angus being in the strip were (1) an introduction to Marigold (and therefore Momo, May, Dale, Willow, and Iris) and, (2) getting Faye out of the coffee shop where she could hook up with Bubbles (which lead to us meeting many of the other robot cast). And yes, I have kept this smoldering antipathy of Angus alive in my heart for over a decade after his departure. What of it?

Thormation

Looking for #1492 on a tablet, I got #1392 by accident and it took me a minute to realize!

Charles Hirst

Right? "Breaking the spell" is epic next-level stuff.

BobC

Day-am! Am I the last to hear about Bro Jogan? So meta...

BobC

Yeah, she does seem part of "the new cast".

SilverbackRon

And his departure triggered a series of events that changed QC forever...

adrian koren

As someone who once owned his own bowling shoes, and had friends on his college's bowling team, I did not recognize this as a bowling shirt. Then again, I don't see Angus as smarmy. In a QC world where Sven was still a recovering "man-slut" (per Faye's accurate term in #1782), and Steve said he probably would have hooked up with a woman roommate for whom he didn't have a real attraction if she drunkenly came on to him (see #1639), Angus was pretty forthright with Faye.

ValdVin

I thought it was more like "The Daily Show", but, yep.

ValdVin

Fair enough. Was just pointing it out because I was reading the strip where a website was said to be amazing in 1995

Egos

Is that the farm we get Angus steaks from? Because I'm down for that.

Michael Chui

This was probably my favorite style type of QC!! Loved how almost realistic it looks. Also was always hoping that Angus would make a reappearance and stir up some drama 😅

Shields

Good writing technique is to let the reader fill in the unsaid with their own preferences; Oh, that game, yeah that was released in like ~2005. Now add on how many decades between us and AI toaster and AIs jones to be a fighter jet of course some prefer the writer to fill all that in for them

dcy665 .

The difference between "buying the farm", "being farmed out", and being "sent to the farm is entirely clear" Beyond we will remain Angus free

dcy665 .

Either that or, being charitable to a guy who probably meant well beneath the irony poisoning, he's very ashamed of his old job and has distanced himself from it as much as possible. But, y'know.

Lorelei

Yeah, the dude is 100% on podcasts now making this universe's Bro Jogan look smart.

Lorelei

Yeah... we can do without angus. even though saying that feels kind of like killing a dude. maybe send him to a farm upstate

Boots McGoot

Same. Did not register at all.

Andrew Mitchell

Always forget how long Marigold has been a mainstay. Feels like she was introduced only a little while ago.

Phillip

Moved to NYC for a acting gig on pseudo 'Tonights Show' IIRC

TheCaptainTrout

Can someone refresh my memory oh what happened to Angus?

Spazzzen

His job also aged super poorly for me lol. Glad he's dead.

Luzahn

I really love the relationship changes that everyone went through, they all felt so realistic. I was a toxic jealous sack of crap when I was younger and reading the Dora/Marten breakup really helped give me some perspective on my own behavior. Looking back, I think my friend recommended QC to me around that time for that reason. Now I’m happily married like a decade later, and it’s really kinda great.

Brian

Tbh I didn’t like the personality shift on my first reading, I thought it was kind of poor writing on Jeph’s part but I’m SO glad she changed now. I can’t imagine the direction a super-serious Hanners would have taken QC.

Brian

ngl, I legit was like "who is this goober". I'd totally forgotten about Angus.

Amy ☣

This was fantastic dialogue, I loved this strip when I first read it.

Brian

Let's not forget how we met Hanners in the first place. In-control, watching drunk Marten with great amusement.

Michael Steamweed

I was reading through the older comics and realized the year has never been stated

Egos

Hope you're feeling better.

Eric Johnson

The Concept of Hannelore sounds like a great name for a band

LH

No Angus, they are not going to "lez out", jeez! https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1492

BookBeard

To be fair, Hanners WAS pretty unhinged back then

Brian Yaras

I forgot how terrible this one was, in a good way. I'm giggling uncontrollably and my nieces keep asking to see what's so funny.

Orion Rhine

Hanners has gone through the most art changes of anyone on the cast. Faye might be second, but the *concept* of Faye has been mostly consistent, while the concept of Hannelore has changed several times.

Bill Silvia

[looking at the black bowling shirt I got years ago for a staged reading] [shrug]

Maurice Kessler

I'd still like to see a strip where Faye and Bubbles are watching TV some night and Angus appears on a show. Would be interesting to hear that conversation.

Kat Robinson

The Faye-Angus breakup really made me happy in a lot of ways (likely cause I used to see a lot of myself in her), which is hilarious considering I now realize I'm a lesbian and Faye is now happily with a girl robot. Now just to find myself a giant hot lady robot....

Aerin Moriarty

Oh, I hoped Angus would reappear at some point for him and Faye to get closure!

Motyka

This is my favorite QC comic of all time

James

I remember this strip and laughed as much this time as last time
