Directember: Savory Husks

Exceptionally cute Hanners in this one. Good job, past me. One of the funny parts of making over 5000 comics is how I don’t actually remember a lot of them, but somehow I can keep the continuity (mostly) straight in my head. I do frequently have to comb through my own archive (and occasionally the QC fan wiki, lol) to make sure I’m not getting something wrong, and sometimes it happens. But I’ve come to terms with that- it’s basically inevitable, and I can always fix any errors after the fact. How wild is it that it took me over TWENTY YEARS to realize that if I didn’t like how something had gone in a particular comic, I could always just…go back and change it, and that wasn’t somehow a failing on my part? Cartoonists have brain problems.

Right?!

legobil

Is this some kind of peak Hannelore-floof? Is there a scale to measure this? It looks adorable af.

legobil

I would rather have Spider Cider, myself, but the spidercoffee would go well with a spider donut...

Spell Craft

Hugh do a thorough one, it's roasting not toasting. Blond roast has the most, dark has the least caffeine. Depending on the method, the lighter roasts have 5-10% more caffeine.

Carrie

Hannelore has peak hair floof in this strip

Steve

Mmm....spidercoffee...best served blended (avoid the clumpiness), hot, and with steel-cut oatmeal.

Michael Steamweed

"Normal" is used in mathematics to mean "perpendicular to a surface." So the only normal people are those standing up straight on flat ground.

Captain Button

More like Hannadorbs...

Jared Cyr

Imagining the least-circuitous path: Pet Capybara beside Faye’s apartment- walks past open fire - rodent gas somehow very inflammable - BOOM.

Andrew

I'm not sure that spiders have much caffeine anyway

Sorastro

Quick lookup indicates that caffeine level isn't affected by roasting.

Hugh Eckert

Brilliant!

legobil

@enchantedsleeper: You can see the NSFW version of that comic in this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/spicey-102393781

Sean Kinlin

Yes! Recent science indicates that the way we save & retrieve memories is less like filing forms in a cabinet & more like making a neural map & then retracing your steps along that same trail. Each time you go down that same memory path, just like walking through the woods, your presence and passage change the trail a bit, albeit unintentionally & in ways you might not notice without intentional scrutiny. The newer & fresher the memory, the more likely it is to change significantly. Fascinating, right? 🤯 So, if Jeph wants to change history in the QC-verse, It’s altogether possible that most of us wouldn’t notice. 🙃

Melissa Wilson

Reality has perfect continuity but terrible narrative plausibility.

Stephen Wells

He was clawed by Hercules while nude due to Clinton proximity. In the website version he has pants on, in the patreon alternative he does NOT have anything on, and he is a gentleman of substance. Considerable substance.

Stephen Wells

OMG Elliot! Why have I forgotten you! Hows your cat???

Tao Gold

my brother in christ we ALL have brain problems, that's why we are here

Pejo

& after thinking for decades that it wasn’t possible for her to be any sexier, now I’m trying to decide which would be hotter- Dragonborn Hanners or BG Sister Hannelore.

Melissa Wilson

I think that’s called gaslighting? 🤣

Melissa Wilson

"Tarantulatte" 😆

Claudia D.

A most excellent purpose for zettelkasten!!!

Melissa Wilson

I ADORE the Sven/Hanners date. Definitely in my top ten favorite arcs. ♥️ -hops on bat to fly back to 2010-

Holly Nelson

Spider coffee: good to the last scream.

Miyaa

I am torn between desiring spider coffee and wanting to save all the lovely spiders.

PZ Myers

Floofy Hannerz…

will davison

Melbourne still has *plenty* of bats, don’t you worry 😅

Al

She really looks so different here compared to present!Hanners.

enchantedsleeper

And then your fans can argue about it forEVER!

enchantedsleeper

We... did?

enchantedsleeper

Spiders Dora, who lives in Northampton and drinks over 15 million cups of spidercoffee a day is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

Dean Reilly

It's just a setting on the washing machine

Todd Ellner

In panel 1 and 2 Hannilor's eyes have a very "Alice Grove" look.

Gregory Cotton

Still timing out - the bats must be going the long way [via US] from Adelaide to the ACT.

Charles Hirst

"Normal" used in electronics engineering means multiplying by the square root of negative one. "Normal"is imaginary.

Opus the Poet

How many people will now compare their local archives with the currently published version? Will there be a weekly updated diff sestion?

Sarah Peper 🏳️‍⚧️

Amen. The people who are convinced they are normal always turn out to be very weird indeed.

Clifton Royston

🤣 I like my coffee black & I love the caffeine (less roasting means more caffeine). Blond roast espresso is awesomeness too.

Carrie

Bibles are a pretty standard practice in television. Some are more robust than others, depending on how many moving parts you have. They tend to be more appropriate to collaborative storytelling environments which don’t benefit from — or even have a framework for — flying by the seat of one’s pants.

Wednesday

oh man, I recently had a conversation about how the definition of "canon" isn't as straight-forward as you'd think. Sometimes companies put out multiple versions of a work to get around censorship, sometime companies errata work, sometimes authors declare something is canon after the fact. It's actually crazy how many examples you can find of continuity changing.

cromulent

We saw his genitals! Though under sub-optimal conditions.

Diptych

Made by spiders, for spiders, of spiders!

Diptych

That's not an elaborate internet pun or anything - just a true fact about Australian cities and their bats.

Diptych

Adelaide's very pretty - I can see the bats not wanting to leave. Melbourne ended up having to force its bat population out, and they ended up flying to my dad's place and eating all his fruit.

Diptych

I believe the end of the Corpse Witch story was changed shortly after it was published. I recall part of a story about Millefeuille getting robot-drunk was too. And one line about Dora getting Coffee of Doom's budget wrong and panicking because she thought she had an order of magnitude less money than she thought she did. Mostly tiny changes here and there!

Diptych

I'd rather the double espresso Black Widow roast.

fizzlefist

"What? Nah, Pintsize was always banned from Greenland. You probably just imagined that Canada thing."

BookBeard

Nope, only 6 so far. I continue to hold out hope for more books one day.

BookBeard

Are you sure you wouldn't prefer our new tarantulatte?

BookBeard

I'd like the dark brown recluse roast, please.

Sleepy John

I would be *very* curious to see an example of Jeph having gone back and changing a line or whatever just for continuity. That would be a hoot.

SilverbackRon

hahaha, with what, 5300+ comics, the odds of him hitting the same one twice in a month are pretty slim. Edit: that wasn't the question, the question was "what if..."

SilverbackRon

Ah, a classic example of the capybara fart effect. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2162

BookBeard

Hahaha, I remember first reading it too. Good times! 🤣

SilverbackRon

I was also just thinking about the Trek bibles

djellafine

Fus-do-RAH

Magic Chopstick Games

IMHO everyone has brain problems and there's no such thing as "normal".

Sammitch

Been done. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1755

Buck Caldwell

The panel 5 Eliott skepticism is adorable.

legobil

Mmm, spider coffee.

Everett Bradshaw

Calling it now - Jeph comes back, retcons the toaster fire, which leads to updating 4000 comics to resolve the cascading effects.

Andrew

I hope you're proud of yourself

Alcaria Swain

Yeah, I want my spider coffee to support spiders!

Graydon Armstrong

Jeph, you just need to get BookBeard's contact info.

Graydon Armstrong

I swear some comic writers have a whole physical card catalog cross referenced for character and plot details. If a path is followed in a particular order, clues to a great buried treasure can be found.

Tudza

That’s too bad, the angst of being roasted alive (and trace spider venom) really adds some zesty flavor notes.

Shane Wegner

So directember got me reading the Bubbles intro arc, and since I'm sure I'm not the only one doing something similar the site has been a mite slow. I ended up buying the topatoco pdf pack but book 6 ends before where i was reading. Is there a book 7 or such?

Bel

Look, I've been thinking about this. I find that requesting a given page on the QC site may result in a "connection timed out" error, but on a second try, the page will load. My conclusion is that in order to get a bit of distance from the strip Jeph has parked the images on a server in Adelaide, South Australia -- the current far end of the Internet. It takes the cyberbats which carry the information a long time to fetch the images, and on the way (probably somewhere over Queensland), they are often attacked by hostile flying foxes, who have been against this whole "World Wide Web" thing from the beginning A good many of the cyberbats find themselves either turning back or forced to drop packets. But many of the indefatigable bats eventually do make it to the next server, and with patience, we can read the strip -- although at a disappointingly low bat-rate for a while, at least.

Ursus Ridens

Or is *was* covered by insurance and they rebuilt.

Captain Button

Oh my GOD I forgot. That’s wild. I remember now. It’s just been a minute since I last saw him.

Brian

Oh, for a cup of Costa Rica Tarranzula or Sumatra Mandibling.

kaitou

Damn. Remember back when Roku was actually fantasizing about Clinton of all people? Long ago.

Alan

The real power move is leaving the old comic up, but putting a link on the new comic that leads to an edited version, to mess with readers who do an archive dive...

Daniel Farnitano

When I first read this, panel 4 had me laughing so hard I started hyperventilating.

Steve Talley

Hey just so you know, the site's been down for a lot of people for the past couple days

Jonah Hillman

Skyrim reference goes here

Wynn Donivan

I'm willing to be paid in mysteriously wet Canadian Tire money.

BookBeard

"Spider Coffee vegan blend" too please. 😅🤣🤪

Carrie

I mostly meant how we experience reality. It is almost impossible to perfectly recall your own life. Not to mention all of the small and big lies we experience. So yeah reality does have perfect continuity, but our view of reality is tiny and easily distorted.

DemonLordSparda

Good for her, she cleared out all the spiders and she didn't even need to resort to orbital bombardment (I assume). https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2468

BookBeard

It's okay Jeph, even people who aren't cartoonists have brain problems.

Nikki

Spider Coffee! Now with 120% more spider suffering!

Nikki

I mean, I hope reality has perfect continuity, although I guess if you subscribe to some kind of simulation hypothesis...

Darryl Williams

Then what is the point? If I buy spider coffee, you better have made sure some spiders have suffered and or died while making it.

Shawn K. Younkin

Just a reminder, anytime you change continuity you have the option of editing the older comic to match the current continuity. You know, to screw with readers ;-P

James Anthony

Let's see: He and Clinton became a couple. He took Roko on as a baking apprentice. He agreed to get treatment for his anxiety condition, though we haven't seen him actually do it. As far as I can tell, he still works as a baker at the Secret Bakery and as a bouncer at The Horrible Revelation.

jonesnori

here's a thought Jeph, what happens if random hits a page you've already done commentary on? I love the spider coffee thing, because it's entirely plausible especially in colder climate parts of the states where spiders are largely indoor creatures. ~<3

Mitsuki Ayane

Jeph should sell a line of Spider Coffee that has harmed zero spiders.

Carrie

I can't recall if Hanners drinks coffee. She might be extra mad if she is remembering past cups with current knowledge.

Jeremy

He's boffing Clinton, Claire's not-twin brother.

Captain Button

IMO The Voice is a useful skill and worth developing.

Carrie

Don't go dissing one of our favorite cartoonist's brain Leave it like it is. It does good.

dcy665 .

If that's your thing. I prefer a nice medium-dark. Coffee wasn't meant to be tea.

Sorastro

But... But... Blond roast is yummier. 🤪

Carrie

“Made by spiders, for spiders, *of* spiders!”

panpolypuff

I’m not gonna lie I completely forgot Elliot existed. What happened to him?

Brian

Yes! An all-timer!

William Cole

Fact!

William Cole

EVERY Hanners is best Hanners.

Andrew Mitchell

"Spidercoffee, courtesy of Barry Mandibles! Not directly, mind you--he's just the roasting supervisor."

ValdVin

Hanners and Sven would be a fun story arc. Gives Sven someone that he can’t get physical with and Hanners a good storyline. In the end it is either Sven heart broken or marriage.

Joey Roberson-Kitzman

Floofy-hair Hanners was so cute during this era. I mean, she's always been cute, but this iteration was especially cute.

Orion Rhine

The only good spider has been roasted bold, ground and brewed

Sorastro

I think the idea we can't retcon our stuff is due to nerd and geek culture. "There HAS to be consistency, or there will be pandemonium!" When in reality it's just a silly story about 20 somethings in New England. If George Lucas can rewrite Star Wars decades after the fact, you can too!

Grace Kieser

Spidercoffee Georg's favorite blend.

Adam with two As, a D, and an M

Interesting. The various Trek shows had "Bibles" that were supposed to keep the writers from writing in inconsistencies. Maybe you should hire @bookbeard

Uniquitous

Georg’s Blend

Magic Chopstick Games

Hannelore is using The Voice again. Her Bene Gesserit is showing.

Doc Gumby

Jeph using his own fan wiki to fact check himself is the third funniest thing I've heard today

Jasper

Human memory is fallible, and reality doesn't have perfect continuity. It's good to try and maintain it, but flaws give life some spice. You've always done a great job. I really appreciate you making a quality web comic for so long.

DemonLordSparda

I can't exactly explain it but Hanners in panels 3–4 is like my ideal body image

Ashbury Haight

“Cartoonists have brain problems.” for which let us all give thanks.

Spike McLarty

We all need do-overs occasionally

Ben R

Those numbers don’t sound right but I don’t know enough about spiders to counter it

Liz Play

Spidercoffee is still very funny

orangejuicenut

Ahh, I’d nearly forgotten about Dora’s Coffee Arachnabica experiments

pfreya

Floofy Hanners is best Hanners.
