Heck Of A View

The space station arc! Definitely the most ambitious thing I had attempted in the comic at that point, and honestly beyond my capabilities at the time. But that’s how you grow- you bite off more than you can chew, and you fuckin figure out how to chew it anyway. And then you choke a little and cough bits of food all over the place and everyone at the restaurant stares at you and you realize that the metaphor has escaped containment and is rampaging through the countryside. I forgot where I was going with this. Anyway, Hannelore is the best.

Same energy as that Dragon Ball Z Abridged quote: "When you fall off that horse, you get right back up, and you EAT THAT HORSE."

Charles Arthur

This an arc I missed and really need to go back and read! I love Hannelore, but everything I know about her background is based on things that have been said since this story.

Jason Roberts

"rampaging through the countryside" - now that needs to be made into a movie. Meta-Phore meetz Nazis?

Robert Heinig

Oh, forgot to mention. I'm an 80 year old, bald-headed gray-beard. Grandpa issues most likely, lol

Qixotic

I met a barista who was Hannelore! Looks, behavior, the whole deal. She wasn't aware of your work so I shared a link. The next time I went in, she gave me a kiss on the cheek and a free coffee. Yay, you!

Qixotic

"But that’s how you grow- you bite off more than you can chew, and you fuckin figure out how to chew it anyway." I needed to hear this currently.

Elizabeth Bear

I hope in the future you can give Station a body, so he and Hannelore can actually hug!

Michael Ogara

Hannelore has remained my fave since her introduction. Only Claire comes close.

AJ Saint

This is my favorite storyline.

BioGeek42

I love hannelore. And her Space Station.

Carol Metzger

Hannelore!

Brendan Luster

I loved this arc so much, it's one of my favorites in the entire comic

Dev

"I thought for sure you would have the topologically programmable force fields perfected by now." "Well, yeah, but it's a huge power drain. I only put it on for formal occasions. And, well, you're family, so I didn't think of it!"

Michael Steamweed

I loved this whole story line, it was so ambitious and clever! Hanners has been my favorite character since she was introduced and this really brought her backstory in sharp focus. Just seeing this strip again sent me on a two hour reading binge.

SilverbackRon

I love this arc... it really expanded things, and was so sweet.

Hugh Eckert

"Can't we have a nice, touching conversation around here without someone doing a pratfall?"

BobC

Hannelore is a great character. The space station AI arc was wonderfully engaging. Yes, it was a big leap, but I thought you told a great story that helped us understand her better.

QuillCarrier

This is the kind of thing I have enjoyed about QC for 20 years. It's easy to do slice-of-life. It's a lot harder to do slice-of-life-oh-wait-there's-space-stations-run-by-AIs.

Thomas Speight

And then, two day later, you see Pintsize go "all thumbs" 😁

Czarzhan

Hannelore is the best!!!!

Jeffrey Anderson

This arc and the growing focus on A.I. are some of the many high points of the series for me. Love it!

We have space haaaaaam! https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2127

Nooo, don't put her in a position of power! You will awake in the evil genes! https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4868

BookBeard

I loved this story arc, there was some good character development, and revealing some Hanner lore (LOL) was funny and interesting.

Everett Bradshaw

As much as I loved reading it, I found it slightly odd that Hannelore went for the lean on Station. For someone with a fear of touching others, that felt like an odd move for her to think of. That being said, I could see her thinking "This is were normal people would lean on each other, and since Station isn't human it won't bother me. Let's try that." Fully thinking it through without recalling the fact he is a hologram.

Jared Kolbly

If we don't, she may Release The Virus.

William Cole

That's one of the most fascinating things about re-reading the strip... being shocked at the art I've forgotten, then watching it evolve over time.

Carl Cravens

Are we ever going to get a return of the space ham?

Joe Bocanegra

I loved this storyline.

Melanie

My trawl has gotten up to #248 which introduced the later dropped Natasha. The news includes the comment "Because, you know, my comic needed more female characters." Past Jeph, you had no idea of what would happen further down the line!

Mark

I think it has the right comic, for the day, but the wrong text. Remember, we're supposed to be seeing comics a day early. So that should have been Monday's comic, but Monday's commentary isn't there with it.

JCfromNC

I just remembered a strip I hope gets addressed this month, although I can't remember the exact number off the top of my head: the one where pre-humanoid Momo is attempting a "digital" upgrade of her arms (fingers), and things go haywire. It was oddly prescient of the "AI can't do hands" trope that went around recently.

Czarzhan

No, the website definitely has the wrong comic linked.

Orlet Soir

Maybe it's just me who is looking at the website nowerdays... But it seems to show the wrong page. Anyone else sees this?

Tobias Vockerodt-Bischoff

I love when one of these brings upon an aggressive giggle 🥹 10/10, my absolute favorite

Kristina

I think, that being able to reflect back and share what you love with others who do is a wonderful break. Words and thoughts are nothing compared to planing, drawing, and coloring a comic. 💖

Drazi

Jeph, this strip's space station commentary is currently up on the site under the milk tasting strip, hopefully you see this and manage to fix it quickly.

quarridors

Hanners cleaned up nicely. They all did. Amazing seeing how your art improved and changed. 💖

Drazi

The Space Station Arc has been my favorite arc in QC for a long time. It's nice to revisit it a little.

Lucanid Landman

Aaw I'm loving the flashback in terms of style too. I'm much more a fan of the softer, less angular Hanners we have now. I also love that you were like 'yeah I'm taking a month off...' and then we get 2 posts in the space of a few hours (I am NOT complaining).

Alex

Hannelore lore. The deep cuts.

Mr. Ifrit

Jeph, you’re one of the most hilarious people I know of. This cracked me up so hard. 😁

Freid

That fall at the end is one of my favourite gags

Skye

My first QC comics were when Hannelore was introduced in the bar. I don't remember when that was, but I've been reading since then, and have read it end to end more than once. Hanners is one of my favorites for sure :) Thanks so much for all these years of great stories, and make sure you actually rest! You could take a break and do this in February!

Ryan Stelzleni

This was one of my favorite arcs. Showed so much growth in the characters, in the story, even in yourself as a writer. People having outcomes that weren't their ideal, yet still being mature about it was such a refreshing take.

Brian Yaras

Also, I love the gag at the end of this one which is quite sweet overall.

Mark

I'm hoping that Jeph does more of the very early strips, some of which have amusingly ironic news entries given the future evolution of the strip. For example, the annotation of Dora's first appearance in #75 contains the line " I have a feeling we'll see more of her in the future." You could say that, past Jeph, you could say that. 😉

Mark

One of my favourite arcs because 2001: A Space Odyssey left a lasting impression when my parents took the whole family to its original theatrical release. It terrified the life out of 6 year old me.

Andrew Mitchell

That is a thing I would totally do if it were me

Zig Justice

I bet he keeps clicking on random because it's interesting and he gets sucked into this comic even though he's the one who wrote it

Julie Chan

I think he wrote these all before the break and then scheduled them to upload.

Adam with two As, a D, and an M

So, I know you said you were gonna do director's commentary on random strips, and it's really great, but are you actually taking the break you need? If so, that's cool! But, like, don't overdo it?

Zig Justice

Hanners's character arc has been one of my favourites to witness. It feels like a masterclass in how to allow a character to develop and grow while still maintaining their core personality.

Cas Wanden

This was such a fun arc.

pseudoclever

Hannalore is so my favorite character. She is such a bean! Honestly, they're all great. But Hannalore sits near the top in my heart.

Vilinda

Was that joke an anaology for itself…? If so, I would say you started a beautiful expedition, chased the bite down, killed it and then ate it down successfully.

legobil

They mentioned they did this beforehand. As an anxious person, I can empathize that posting stuff like this is *helping* them relax

pseudoclever

The personal growth of Hannelore is one of my favourite parts of QC by far :)

Víctor A. Torre

I am laughing even though I joined long after this came out. I guess I need to go back.

Dan Weiss

2012 Hannelore does not appreciate that analogy.

Bill Silvia

You set that joke up and pulled it off without a hitch.

Chris Giesy

The vacation/director's commentary is really nicely timed for me, I did a reread earlier this year so it's nice seeing some of your thoughts on different bits with them relatively fresh in my mind

Max Cooper

Vacate! Do vacation! Don't *increase* your posting frequency! Shoo! Go relax!

Graydon Armstrong

This was one of my favorite arcs!

Spacey02111

All hail Hannelore!
