Heirs Apparent

Anh is just awful (writing awful people is fun)

Leak

If I got a tan in the summer, it would definitely be gone after a time skip or two.

Bill Silvia

We'll see, I guess; Tai and Dora aren't well off, but Anh presumably manages to be friends with them if she's in the wedding party.

enchantedsleeper

*cackling*

enchantedsleeper

I think at one point the tan went away, and then came back. Maybe based on the seasons?

enchantedsleeper

Ahn, May and Pintsize are Charlie's Demons :)

Stephen Wells

Huh. My reply full of bad puns about '80s Heir Metal bands seems to have been firmly rejected by Patreon's servers. I can't fault their taste anyway.

Clifton Royston

How dare you say we piss on the poor.

Diptych

of course she's being nice to Hanners, she clocked her as an heiress, which means someone she is required to rub shoulders with and be nice, at least until she discovers said heiress is a poor one (not Hannelore, just... in general, I've met her type) ~<3

Mitsuki Ayane

Dang, that feels like growth for Hanners, whether Jeph intended it or not. I would have thought earlier in the comic she'd have been too worried about skin cancer (still a concern of mine lol) to spend enough time outside for maintaining a now, but now she seems like she'd be fine.

Sero

Once I have a tan, maintaining it is easy. Well, easier than getting it. Some light outdoors exercise or yardwork a few days a week is all it takes for me. However, I am in Southern California, and the sun is pretty strong here.

David Blood

I just realized with this time skip, Hanners is still tanned from her time abroad. My pasty ass actually doesn't know because I avoid excess sun, do tans actually last that long, or would she be having to maintain it?

Sero

Ahn and Hannelore and May need to form a strange new version of Charlie's Angels.

Chris Warren

Yep. I don’t know why people keep missing this.

Philip Masters

Good point! But she would loathe Willow's sunshine attitude, I predict. Or maybe she'd be extremely patronising and Willow would take it in good faith.

enchantedsleeper

She was talking about Sven finding his soulmate at his sister's wedding...

enchantedsleeper

"Better" is always relative...

enchantedsleeper

Er. No? xD

enchantedsleeper

You must be an only child! (;

Grace Kieser

Anh said in a past panel: "Imagine finding your soulmate at your own sister's wedding." Is she Tai's sister? I feel like we've heard almost nothing about Tai's family... potentially an as-yet-untapped well of new characters and relationships.

danepps

Fisticated. Heh. That sounds dirty.

legobil

Oh loord that was terrible ;)

Duncan

Ungauchefisticated?

Duncan

Hanners is so nice that I suspect she'll say something like "Oh dear, it does sound a bit implausible when you put it like that, doesn't it?" rather than taking much offence.

Philip Masters

I suspect that Anh already does yoga. Probably on a beach in Thailand, with an extremely famous and fashionable teacher.

Philip Masters

In retrospect, The Ship Who Sang is horrific from a disabled perspective. People whose bodies work differently should get help to live normal lives, not be enslaved.

jonesnori

We do know that Hanners can play the drums! With Marten in Cubetown (who knows what happened to Amir), she'll need a new musical outlet...

enchantedsleeper

I think the "awful" also encompasses snobbish and elitist, materialistic and arguably self-centred, but yes, she's also displayed a number of better qualities. I noticed her wiping a tear away at the ceremony, too!

enchantedsleeper

Note that if Hanners had just said “Mom owns a bunch of companies, I don’t keep track of the details. Dad’s more on the R&D side”, Anh wouldn’t have blinked.

Philip Masters

Olaf: No she didn't. She referred to Sven being the other bride's brother. I imagine that she was invited because she's an old friend who's perfectly tolerable when her libido isn't being a nuisance. Politely calling BS on such a flagrantly implausible story hardly makes her intolerable.

Philip Masters

She had Hanners down as "just" a fellow heiress, and doesn't seem too worried about hierarchies within that class; it's not like she quoted her father's net worth or anything. And it's not her fault that Hanners's backstory is so extreme, even by heiress standards, that disbelief is the most reasonable response to hearing bits of it.

Philip Masters

That would destroy much of the state. Randall Munro has explained this.

Philip Masters

Huh? She's been quite polite and now even friendly to Hanners, especially given that she initially thought that Hanners had blocked her move on Sven. Her last line here is a little snarky, but given how wild Hanners's backstory really is, she can't be blamed for very politely calling bullshit.

Philip Masters

Anh really doesn't come across as terrible. She was a bit snarky about having someone cut in on her attempt to chat up a handsome guy, and apparently her friends regard her sexual behaviour as a little tiresome at times, but she's been fairly polite to Hanners so far, and switched from suspicion to affability as soon as the misunderstanding was cleared up. Likewise, Tai doesn't seem to find her that annoying. It sounds like she may have asked her not to treat the male wedding guests as an all-you-can-eat buffet, but given Tai's previous comments about the use of the spare room, she can't complain too much about that. (Edit: Note also that Anh was looking quite sentimental about the wedding, back in her very first non-speaking appearance in #5404, at least until she noticed Sven. And she displayed a romantic streak in the strip before this one. I know that Jeph has said she's "awful", but that's surely "somewhat sex-mad and a teeny bit sarky" awful, not friendship-ending awful.)

Philip Masters

As Andrew says, Hanners doesn't move in plutocrat-class circles. And Anh doesn't know her surname yet; it's possible that she knows enough that when someone says "Ellicot-Chatham", she'll blink and emit a small "oh, right". And she's only been talking to Hanners for a couple of minutes at this point; she's doubtless picked up that Hanners is a little unusual, but she'd have to be very perceptive to be sure that she's ultra-honest all the time. She could just be a passable actress when she tries.

Philip Masters

We can't totally rule out them being related, though; maybe Anh is a cousin? Also, yes, she was in the wedding party, that's exactly why this conversation is happening 😆

enchantedsleeper

I feel like a significant chunk of the wedding planning may have involved Dora complaining about Sven and Tai complaining about Anh. Although Sven is better these days but I can believe he and Dora still get on each other's nerves <:

enchantedsleeper

One step forward... one step sideways through the trapdoor

enchantedsleeper

What about Anh and Willow, though :D Anh would be climbing the walls as Willow tried to lead her through a breathwork session.

enchantedsleeper

It's been a very recent subject of comments discussion 😆

enchantedsleeper

I mean, we've seen Roko and the AI rights org going to bat for an assembly line whose owners were threatening to lay it off, which would have led to the loss of its body. (That was what Roko went on her drunken livestreamed rant about). This is actually a very real problem for AI. I wonder if there was ever a possibility that Bubbles' could have lost her body after she was demobbed from the military. I think she must have had some protections against that.

enchantedsleeper

Ha! Good point with the parallels. Let's see what happens when Hannelore asks to be friends, Y/N?

enchantedsleeper

Oh, I think she's worked out who Hannelore is referring to, but that's why she thinks Hannelore must be making it up. But yeah, she should be able to tell by now that Hanners is honest to a fault xD

enchantedsleeper

If Anh really is terrible, then I wonder why she's Tai's bridesmaid. (Maybe they were childhood friends and Tai felt like she should even though they don't have much in common any more). I find it easier to believe that they'd be close friends if Anh is a decent person. But then, I know people IRL who have had longstanding friends they actually didn't like that much or realised they were completely incompatible with. So maybe it's not that surprising.

enchantedsleeper

@Stephen: sounds cool.

Sean Kinlin

I doubt Hanners has the visibility typical for a child of the mega-rich since she doesn't move in those circles nor is she the heir apparent to her mother's companies.

Andrew L Butula

Anh doesn't read people very well. I think it would be obvious that Hann is being honest. Also - how out of touch do you have to be if you're part of the wealthy class, but don't know who the children of famous billionaires are?

Shawn Spencer

Mark

There will be a more successful cover band called Heir Conditioning :)

Stephen Wells

Somehow this reminds me of when Winslow described his actual day and Hanners was convinced he was hallucinating :)

Stephen Wells

💯

Carrie

🤣😂🤣😂 Is he pretending his name is Ichabod?

Carrie

I vote for Iris.

allanfranta

She is at some point gonna get the Ellicott-Chatom bomb dropped on her.

Boots McGoot

Wow, points to you for remembering her name.

Clifton Royston

As was discussed in a fairly recent page, it is kind of shocking how many S-Tier friends and acquaintances are Marten's orbit.

SilverbackRon

Let’s hope this was the control group.

Daniel Burnett

"Oh, you're one of /those/ Tessier-Ashpools."

nbarnes

Oh I just realized their dynamic reminds me of Moray & Yay. Or at least how I took Yay at the beginning of their interaction--the condescension, self-assured superiority despite the other being almost entirely unknown, & the other reacting with an innocent curiosity & being completely unimpressed & unoffended by said condescension & grandstanding & theatrics. Now we just need Anh to freak out & disappear forever lol

Pejo

It's not just about being loaded. It's also about who she knows. She's friend with Station. She can also get a lift from experimental stealth aircraft to go to a lake.

Nicolas Dao-Phan

There is a joke here about drool, gauche and unsophisticated, but I’m not versed enough to find it.

legobil

I continue to forget how unbelievably loaded Hanners is.

Mark

Everyone works for Beatrice Chatham in some way.

Nulgar

Nah, Tai knows her, and only objected to her flirting with Sven, not her being there at all.

Nulgar

Wheelchair is not sentient but it’s considered part of person using it. Sentient robot can change their body but were are considering chassis as them. So whole station is what Station is

Thomas Ruecker

Anh is one of those characters, she is 100% the kind of person who will order her steak rare, get a rare steak and send it back because it's bloody. not because there is anything wrong with the steak, but because she likes putting down the staff. ~<3

Mitsuki Ayane

Opeth reference in the title? If so… Niceeee.

Rodrigo Ourcilleon

Get this woman a pizza. At relativistic velocity.

Uniquitous

I love the total disconnect between these two. I hope they stay in touch.

Bagge

I went back a couple three strips to check, and I think you're right that she was in the wedding party

Vic or Vyxter

And a blonde (she dyes it red).

Opus the Poet

I agree!

Randall Norman Pick

@Sean Kinlin • GDI. I’m getting awful 1980’s band memes from this pun!

Miyaa

@Sean Kinlin • More like Absolute Hannerlore Ellicott-Chatham.

Miyaa

*googly eyes*

prettydragoon

She's eventually going to get Hanners' name... And then we get to find out how Jeph illustrates "woman choking on her own spleen from sheer disbelief"!

GearaDoga

Bring Sven back into the picture for a steady supply of heirs...

Doc Gumby

The two of them should form a band, and call it Heir Supply.

Sean Kinlin

And Hanners says "Oh, did I forget to introduce myself?"

awgiedawgie

Invited herself and somehow inveigled her way into the wedding party!

Diptych

@Minzoku: but is this Alpha Hannelore?

Sean Kinlin

OK, this brings up a lot of questions. Station is obviously a sentient being, but does that encompass the entirety of the Space Station building? Or just the core control unit? Can Station quit, and be replaced? If the space station were damaged beyond repair, could his consciousness be relocated? It brings to mind the Brainship series of books by Anne McCaffrey, in which certain highly intelligent children with severe or deadly bodily issues, illnesses, accidents, etc, would be placed into a life support system and wired into ships, stations, entire cities as the central command and control. In some cases, the person - generally never seen in person, but interacted with through communication systems and such, could earn the price to buy out their contract - their hull, if you will, or equivalent - and no longer be bound to their job.

Buck Caldwell

Each new character we meet is my new favorite

Aerin Moriarty

time to name-drop, Hanners. time to name-drop _yourself_

R. Francis Smith

She is about to commit the ultimate sin - be heiress to originality not ownership and thus indirectly shaming the nouveau riche. If there's anything a trust fund child hates, it's being irrelevant twice over.

SpookyPenguin

The difference between truth and fiction is that fiction is edited to be believable

Todd Ellner

I was thinking the same thing!

FeyOne

No, she never said she herself was the Bride's sister. Her comment in 5416 was a mirror to Hanner's exact comment in 5412. They are both talking about Sven meeting his soulmate at *his* sister's wedding. i.e Dora.

SilverbackRon

Ahn isn't just awful, she's naive and that's even MORE fun!

SpookyPenguin

Did Anh just invite herself? THAT would be pretty hilarious.

Shawn K. Younkin

We know.

YoPaulie!

“Writing awful people is fun.” And 20+ years of comics comes into focus. 😜

Taigan

So, who’s got money on Anh’s dad working for Hanners’ mom?

Joseph

Hannelore: the first person to be certified to be ISO 14644-1 aka ISO 7 certification. (Also ISO 8 certified.)

Miyaa

Hannelore's dad does perform a useful service, he's increasing the amount of zaniness in orbit. All those regular astronauts, so serious.

Doc Gumby

Hanners is about to accidentally assert her dominance in this interaction.

Sammitch

That would be funny and Schandenfreude-ish for Hanners to enjoy how much her mom’s wealth has suffered since Hannelore used the voice™.

Miyaa

Me too, I really hope Jeph follows through with that

JPMK! {verb}

Schrödinger’s heiress, that is Hanners.

Miyaa

"It would mean she's been trying to hook up with her (new) co-brother-in-law..." The number of animes in that genre are large enough to...be a genre, making it common and still weird.

ValdVin

Teddy Roosevelt heard about Hannelore's mum, rose from his grave, and is rapidly approaching her on horseback.

Diptych

No, she's not making stuff up. Her dad really does live on a space station, and her mom really does own a bunch of businesses.

Shaodyn

I thought she was saying that *Sven* was the bride's sibling. I'd be surprised if she was Tai's sister, because A: they don't particularly look alike and B: it would mean she's been trying to hook up with her co-brother-in-law? Which feels a bit weird. 'Hello, I'm your new sister (with caveats). Let's fuck.'

Diptych

Only child *that we know of*. There's always the chance for shenanigan plots. Both creators like some hijinx.

ValdVin

That's why I like the word "drool". The way it rolls off the tongue.

Buck Caldwell

Jealous much?

Not that Patrick Foltz

Ahn's expression when the penny drops is going to be priceless!

Doc Gumby

But wait, does that mean Tai is secretly filthy rich? Did we know that?

JD

I really thought we were on our way to a cute new friendship 😞 my naivety once again getting the better of me.

JD

Look, I'd not be surprised in the least if Hanners had about half a dozen patents for dry-cleaning methods we've never heard of to her name.

Olaf

She said she was sister to the bride, so I imagine Tai did. Also she was in the wedding party.

Grace Kieser

I don't think we were in any danger of that

Grace Kieser

I don't think so. Carla is an only child.

Grace Kieser

She mentioned being the bride's sister, so I guess Tai had to.

Olaf

I hate her and want to see a hundred more strips about her so she can have a full character arc. I wanna lock her and Iris or Bubbles or Roko or someone in a room together; she'll either die or come out a better human being.

Adarsh Nednur

To be honest, Hannelore’s backstory is kinda unbelievable to those not used to the fantastic. One she hears the name though…

Thisguy

Anh is giving me whiplash with how she's making me switch my opinion of her so fast

Aditya Rameshan

So excited for her to tell her her last name lmao

Nicole Featherby

I guess Anh likes to be on top.

Bill Silvia

Tech company heiress? Is this gonna be a crossover with Willis?

ValdVin

Gauche is such a fun word. It rolls off the tounge in such an awkward way.

legobil

Oh, Anh is swimming with sharks right now. She has no ability to impress Hanners at all.

Tannerbot

god dammit Anh, I thought you were redeeming yourself

JD

I'm really starting to wonder who the hell invited Anh to the wedding?!

Vic or Vyxter

Nope, I don't like her again.

Graydon Armstrong

heiress to everything, everywhere, all at once

Minzoku Bokumetsu

If she knew lol

Simon Vaillancourt

Thanks, I hate her.

Mortimer Langford

Especially the truth.

Daryl Sawyer

I feel like Hannelore dropping the EC lore on Anh is going to break her.

R L

Everything is made up Anh, even the truth!
