house centipedes are our friends. our creepy, disturbing little friends.

John Pallister

They ARE cute!

Jennifer De Lurio

I was main tank healer, I wasn't moving for shit til raid leader told me I could lol

Aerin Moriarty

Or squishy. If it has more than 4 legs, it’s a bug, especially those nasty underwater big handed cockroaches people eat

Joshua

Might also have been a silverfish, they look vaguely similar and like bathrooms.

Joshua

Nah, it happened during WoW, you’re not allowed to stop that for anything short of fire, flood, or booty call.

Joshua

We have an agreement. They stay out of my way, and they get to live. Same for spiders, but if they web anywhere I walk, they’re getting evicted.

Joshua

I don't know if the Australian centipedes are deadly venomous, but if it's the same kind that's endemic in Hawaii, Southern Polynesia, and Southeast Asia, the bite is excruciatingly painful, and the bites tend to get nasty infections too.

Clifton Royston

Exactly

Rachel Maeroff

Yes!

Opus the Poet

When we lived in Hawaii the centipedes could kill cats and small dogs, and were reputed to have killed a toddler.

Opus the Poet

Next, find a video of them moving. That's the thing that sends me into "k!ll mode"

Nicole Sweetmercy

... she's hiding in the basement, isn't she?

KiTA

One of the earliest naturalists on Australian TV was notorious for grabbing all sorts of dangerous wildlife and hauling them up in front of the camera, but in one episode he filmed a centipede bustling past and said something to the effect of "OK, we'll just leave him alone" and I wondered what kind of killing machine that must have been that even this maniac didn't want to touch it.

Mark

No, too convenient...

Doc Gumby

Yay is probably already in it, right?

Melissa Wilson

Anything is better than cockroaches. *shudder*

Sean Kinlin

So Yay is George Bailey?

Sean Kinlin

Still prefer centipedes over cockroaches, any day.

David Paul

There'll probably be a Linux patch to support them, though.

David Paul

I've got 2 spiders living in webs on my front door glass. They've caught heaps of bugs.

Jim

That house centipede is a coworker to Melon, thank you very much

Bagge

Huh, in Swedish we just say “half wings” about Hemiptera, but then we don’t really use the word bugs like English do. Maybe “insekter”/insects or the slang “kryp” (translates to crawlers or creeps) is mostly used similar to the term bug.

legobil

Maybe they didnt delete the codes, but hopefully changed them…? 😬

legobil

Wonder if Yay is in there. One or maybe some of their units…?

legobil

Are we talking about the centipedes, or Yay?

Graydon Armstrong

“I like the way Dneirfwen thinks!”

Graydon Armstrong

I implore any parents out there: teach your kids NOT to have the attitude towards nature's creatures displayed by the characters here.

Chas Simmons

I'll take house centipedes over ticks all day every day.

Mandy Hoskins

I just claim "It's a feature."

Clifton Royston

If you have a basement boiler room or an attic, toss them there and you'll likely never see them again (they prefer temps around 100°F and humidity near 100%)

ArtemisFolly

I've had to deal with roaches. I'd much rather have had centipedes.

Maurice Kessler

So I just Googled house centipedes, because we don't really have them here in the UK and you're right: they're SO CUTE! Have you seen their widdle faces?! Aww... Also: they eat things I detest, so that's a big bonus.

Fay Roberts

Meh, they're fine. Whatever

Larry

Oh, geez, BookBeard. Great reference. That directly led to Bubbles getting out of her armor. One of my favorite QC arcs. Though there was some dresser portage between the two.

BobC

No Yay, skynet is not a good role model!

Professor Harmless

Okay I saw a house centipede last week and it absolutely was on-sight. And then I googled them, and they're great pest repellent, so next time it gets thrown out the door far far far far far away from an entry 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Kristina

I was wondering that too. "I've been looking *everywhere* for you!" "I've been hiding here waiting for you!" (Tears, hugs, kisses, fade to black)

Clifton Royston

As long as it wasn't Prefabricated Hovels Inc.

Charles Hirst

House centipedes are fine, kinda cute almost. But I might have that opinion from too much experience with the *big* centipede varieties that are big, creepy, big, and also bitey. And big.

Clifton Royston

Each other. Bits of dead skin.

Todd Ellner

Suggestion: Skip the Wikipedia article on centipedes. Especially the photo of centipedes-on-a-stick.

Ursus Ridens

I think I would prefer a PC filled with house centipedes to one filled with cockroachs. I don't know. I've only seen the second. I'm really not interested in seeing the first.

Drazi

TIL this. I've lost way too many thinly sliced trees to silverfish. But what do house centipedes eat once the silverfish are gone?

BobC

Claire: Honey, you know Dora's famous Spidercoffee? I just got the coolest idea for your cafe in Cubetown.

ValdVin

AKA "EFKAY", the Entity Formerly Known As Yay.

BobC

PT410X could get neckbeard house centipedes! Methinks it would fit the ethos. Because bugs, amirite?

BobC

Aerin, you are a very strong and brave person.

Green

Ah. Thanks. I am now going to put off repairing any more computers until, oh, after the 235th Congress meets.

Ursus Ridens

An AI to freak out our friend Gary?

Ursus Ridens

So *that's* where Cosmo came from. Yay playing the long game by secretly letting a borzoi loose in the city to find a home, so that they could replace it in a worst-case-scenario situation. Devilishly clever!

Sarah Valentine

Yeah nah, I get that some people find them cute, and that they're technically helpful (thus "paying rent" as I like to say in response to people who say they don't let spiders hang around because they "don't pay rent") in that they eat other bugs like earwigs and boxelders (both are rather common at this time of year where I live, especially this year) but goddamn they're creepy to me, I can't stand them. This year is the first time I've run into them firsthand, and I was *not* fond of the first time it happened, or the fact that they're so much faster than the other house bugs I usually have to get rid of...

Sarah Valentine

To get away from you!

Am Queue

We know this from Winslow.

Am Queue

I really need to make time for another total re-read of QC

Aerin Moriarty

Captain Button

NOPE!

William Cole

NOPE!

William Cole

Is that Welsh?

William Cole

And vice versa

Todd Ellner

Cantilever! CANTILEVER!

William Cole

One of those blue light versions from Faro Automated Solutions.

Captain Button

My old apartment had house centipedes. They'd crawl over my toes while I was raiding in WoW at 3am and I'm shocked I never had a literal heart attack cause it was always a bad experience

Aerin Moriarty

i annoy all my friends by asking "is it in hemiptera?" any time they call something a bug

Jennifer Pylko

They're arthropods, myriapods, chilopods, not "true bugs" (hemiptera), but they are called bugs casually, as is pretty much any arthropod, and they can certainly be bugging Aurelia. Sorry if this bugs you :)

Pete

Gross bug but luckily harmless

Bradley Richard

Doesn't Melon's job involve that?

Captain Button

centipedes are top on my nope list. they seriously freak me out. guess I'm getting vaporized.

Ashley Thomas

Semi aquatic?! Perry the Platypus!

Andrea Andrew

It's okay, I'm sure the house centipedes would just get eaten by the scorpions. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4050

BookBeard

Technically most things we call bugs aren't bugs cuz they're not semi aquatic beetle-like insects and yet anything crunchy with too many legs is still a bug

Fart Captor

The Vault-Tec Corporation, presumably.

BookBeard

Hey, spiders are our friends but as much as I love what they do, I can't be around them either. They're hard working little guys that I need to stay far away from me.

Jenea Ylinen Fredrickson

MUCH more likely to replace us as the next apex species. They’ve done it before and desire our throne *narrows eyes*

AlexKorobeiniki

A house centipede? Commence orbital bombardment. Kinetic, EMP, warheads. Full target suite. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4640

BookBeard

House centipedes also eat spiders.

Daryl Sawyer

Or Melon.

Daryl Sawyer

Oh so THAT's what I saw in my bathroom last week. Had to drop a goddamn textbook on it.

Green

wait, who built the fallout shelter?

Brendan Luster

Don't worry, I'm sure you won't need the fallout shelter. Surely the military wouldn't be so careless as to allow the nuclear codes to fall into the hands of a civilian AI.... right? https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1997

BookBeard

Yay Dneirfwen

BookBeard

It happened to Bubbles once. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3463

BookBeard

No one tell Winslow.

Green

Technically, centipedes aren’t bugs. They’re arthropods.

Andrea Andrew

But Mellon is batshit, even by Yay's standards.

Tannerbot

Yay consolidating into a Borzoi. ENDLESS AURELIA PETS.

Benzy

Opinions seem to vary on that subject. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4561 https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4790

BookBeard

wow i hadn't thought about it before but to AI an EMP device is like a serious existential threat

16 Crows In A Trench Coat

Since I moved to Japan I haven't actually seen any house centipedes, but if I find them in my dwelling I will containerize them and relocate them outside. (I've stopped doing that with the jumping spiders because they're cute and I want them to eat any mosquitoes that get inside.)

Zig Justice

"Hi, I'm Millie! Millie Pede. Do you like my robot body?"

BobC

I have a chilly detente with house centipedes. They eat the nasty bugses and stay out of our living spaces and I don’t AAH SMASH IT SMASH IT SMASH IT AAAH

Magic Chopstick Games

But then there's Melon's job.

William Burns

A new identity? Like "Netram Deer, international financier and ostrich racer?"

Captain Button

Oh God, that's horrible. What everyone seems to be forgetting is that house centipedes like heat. That's why they go into the house. What is hotter and more accessible than the CPU inside an AI's casing.

Darth Hypno

House centipedes eat silverfish. Silverfish eat books. Hurray for house centipedes

Todd Ellner

Aurelia hous centipedes are friends. They eat these scary bugs like the cockroaches and the earwigs that eat your books

Michael Phillips

So they *didn't* have each other's number before (which takes down my messaging/group chat pals theory xD). Aurelia really is just good at rolling with random AIs showing up at her house.

enchantedsleeper

The kicker is that “they’re more afraid of you than you are of them” is absolutely TRUE, but that just means that now you have a house centipede scrambling for dear life across your neck and chest 🙃

Magic Chopstick Games

If Fallout's taught me anything, it's that the rads make bugs angry and people-sized.

voyager-ngc5195

I don't begrudge HOUSE centipedes their right to exist. Regular centipedes? Yeah, no, those I exterminate on sight (fortunately for the both of us, I rarely see them and it's been like almost 2 decades since my last encounter). Millipedes, on the other hand, I find absolutely adorable.

Zig Justice

It would be if Yay realized it, but I'm not sure they do.

William Cole

Fallout 4 is based in Boston.

Miyaa

With you on this. I don't begrudge centis their right to exist, as long as I don't have to perceive them and their far too many legs.

William Cole

Umm. What if… what if Yay just had a moment of not thinking and went to answer the Director In Person? Y!

Katrina Urmson

But why do they have to move SO FREAKING FAST?!

Rachel Maeroff

Which one?

JoeTheCynic

Centipedes squick Roko out? She's becoming more and more human. (Does she read William Seward Burroughs? He bloody HATED centipedes.)

OldGoat

And THEN nuke it, to be sure to be sure

Andrew

It’s where she streams playing fallout

Andrew

Nightmare fuel…gonna keep watching Army of the Dead to erase those thoughts

Darren Franzen

Yay has so many friends that are worried about them…that’s kind of a great sign, right?

Darren Franzen

Aurelia would have a Fallout Shelter, wouldn't she?

JoeTheCynic

I'm with Roko on this. Not that an EMP would do much to me aside from making me upset that my phone stopped working moments before I was vaporized.

Orion Rhine

I know that house centipedes eat other insects and are beneficial, but they squick me out something fierce. Jumping spiders are the cute ones what eat other insects in the house.

Zig Justice

Just ask Spaceship & Tilly to laser it out of existence. It’s the only way to be sure.

Miyaa

What if Yay is huddled in Roko's bedroom while Roko is here being all logical?

Bill Silvia

Of course AIs wouldn't like bugs. Both the software kind, and the ones that would gum up their insides.

Tannerbot

I’ve had house centipedes fall on my torso and head no fewer than three times in my adult life, they are the worst

Magic Chopstick Games

Of course she has a fallout shelter, why wouldn't she?

Doc Gumby

[Edit: Ha! I wrote the following before I saw the comment under the comic:] Centipedes are our friends. They eat insects, and are actually rather cute looking when they run.
