Moray Trivia

Evan's never tried Dora's tea

Moray Trivia

Comments

That was a very Knuth joke...

Leak

Sounds fake.

William Cole

technically, unicorn farts are the end product of an assortment of biological processes ultimately powered by photosynthesis, so they are also sunshine.

Zygo

Well said, Bill. Spot on.

Andrew Mitchell

She works very enthusiastically, but not especially well.

Bill Silvia

So interacting with people helped him get better at interacting with people? Who could have predicted it.

BookBeard

I thought that the SMOOSH was a SPLOOSH at first and was pondering the possibilities of a QC/Archer crossover.

Halloween Jack

1889 hours of sunlight per year, or approximately 43% of all possible daylight hours in a year.

Miyaa

Luuuu le loooo li laaaa~

enchantedsleeper

you might have me beat. I was in single digits during TOS, and the only temper tantrum I ever got away with is when they moved it to 10pm Fridays, and my mom wouldn't let me stay up for it. Only reason I got away with it was cause my dad was on my side.

Am Queue

To be clear, she didn't say anything that actually ruled out unicorn farts as a canonical power source. She just didn't say anything that particularly helped their case.

Some Ed

I can't wait for Marten to open his coffee/tea shop in Cubetown so Evan can finally try some. (I honestly think he will make just as much money on exotic teas as he will with coffee)

SilverbackRon

I thought the last line was going to be "I've never been out in the sun", leaving unicorns as a potentially canonical power source in this universe

Starlight

Okay, so apparently one of the things that her hair is capable of is… doing math.

Comics Ladybird

Moray's deely-bobber is the same volume as one Moray boob (but she doesn't know that because without it she can't math)

Kim Slawson

I think learning to deal with himself around Brun helped alot (that and - funnily enough - the disaster date with Emily)

Bagge

I'm so happy for Clinton that he found an AI who is happy to answer questions, even if the answers are insane.

J.C. Hewitt

It's the difference between nude and naked ;-)

Alasdair Mackintosh

When did Clinton get to be so chill?

TV4Fun

Or makes an ominous hummmmmmm?

Hugh Eckert

And rainbows are refracted sunshine. It all makes perfect sense now! Mystery Solved!

SilverbackRon

So most science degrees will require a thesis work at the end of a bachelorate on top of a cumulus final examination. It really depends on whether your field of study will need a master’s degree or not to get a job in the field. (My brother has an electric engineering degree, it did not require a thesis paper. So assuming Clinton is a robotics engineer, he probably wouldn’t have a thesis paper to submit.) They may substitute a senior capstone class where they put all that knowledge into some sort of working project. It’s possible that all Clinton has left to do is that cumulative final exam. Like Claire, he will find that part very stressful.

Miyaa

Three tradwives singing in harmony. It used to be triadtonal, but that was too hard to pronounce (dt), so they changed it for ease of pronunciation and the international conspiracy of tradwives seized on it as a vehicle for world domination. Or maybe just dominant chords?

Also because it wants to listen to ICP. 🤣😂

Nobilis Reed (personal)

When a mythical horse Is your energy source That's a Moray

BookBeard

@enchantedsleeper, FYI the phrase "ugly bags of mostly water" is a Star Trek TNG reference. It's how humans are described by a crystalline lifeform.

BookBeard

There are many terms non-Cubetown residents would consider 'unnatural'

Jon K

If your deely-bobber's detached and you cannot do math, that's a Moray

Jon K

@LH That was my interpretation too. Also, the deely bobber is going "WOOB WOOB", perhaps a reminder to an impaired Moray to reinstall it.

Clifton Royston

Actually, I have a new theory: does Clinton have a subject for his thesis/final paper? (I have no idea what percentage of the way through his studies he is. Book Beard may chime in). I wonder if he'll decide to make Moray(s) the subject of his final project/paper/whatever. Which would necessarily mean some periods of study aaaaat... Cubetown! Cue regular visits from Clinton to Cubetown, sibling sniping between Claire and Clinton as they get on each other's nerves (affectionate), Clinton and Elliot doing occasional long-distance which is tough, but they cope. Yay gets exasperated with Elliot pining in Clinton's absence. They're also jealous that Clinton did not make THEM the subject of his studies, because they are clearly FAR MORE INTERESTING AND SUPERIOR TO SLIME AI, and YES that would defeat the object of staying in the shadows BUT STILL shut up Roko

enchantedsleeper

Neither you, nor Moray are ugly 🥺 (I have obviously not met you but I Know)

enchantedsleeper

Also we know that when Moray is very sad she becomes puddle-fied, so movement probably doesn't work in those circumstances 😢

enchantedsleeper

No matter how hard she tries, no teleportation.

Errant Bunny

I would imagine that having access to the Director's knowledge would not necessarily be of much help here. It would be like me reading a deeply technical paper about the chemical processes by which muscle cells contract: I know some of those words, but not the important ones, and in no way would I be able to convert the knowledge in that paper into a comprehensible casual-conversation answer without spending a few hours (at least!) looking up what the words mean and figuring out how the concepts fit. It's likely that I don't have the chemistry knowledge to recognize all the parts I would need to look up, too, so there will be things I'd miss. For Moray it would be like that but even more so. The difference between how the director thinks about these things is much more distant from normal English than the technical biology-jargon would be, and all of it would need to be translated to English to even start to have an answer -- there's no equivalent of a "something about ATP and calcium ions and sarcomeres" answer for her. And I have the advantage of having enough technical background to give me a good start on understanding the ideas, whereas Moray seems to very much not have a lot of technical knowledge. So, in short: Even if Moray can easily access the information, it seems entirely plausible that the information would be in a form where it would be exceedingly difficult for her to synthesize it into something she could understand and talk about. On a different note: Of course she needs a cam-bot for video calls. On a video call you usually want to see the person you're talking to, not see what they're seeing. And it would be really creepy for her to move one of her eyeballs into her hand and look at herself with it.

Brooks Moses

when you're oodles of fun and you're powered by sun, that's a Moray

Boots McGoot

Pro-human propaganda. The emus won the Emu War.

Dean Reilly

I've had mornings like that ...

Peter Jensen

And since a new coffee shop is opening up, perhaps also ... a bakery?

Peter Jensen

As an ugly bag of mostly water, I think I must be a Moray too.

prettydragoon

That may be a contributing factor to her looking naked, but if I'm being honest I think it's mostly the lack of clothes.

BookBeard

I realised Moray said "most of the time", so you wonder when she tried to move and it *didn't* work...

enchantedsleeper

Moray's deely-bopper makes the same sound as Millefeuille's butt implants. Proof if proof were needed that Moray is, in fact, a butt head. (And possibly that Millie's butt can do math now?) https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4135

BookBeard

......... Poor Clinton, he reads conflicted and beside his nerd self,....

Darnel D Cooper

THE Edgar Winter Group album: They Only Come Out At Night.

Opus the Poet

Wait until Clinton learns she can be used as a bong

enchantedsleeper

We've seen the subject of Clinton possibly moving away for his job come up before and triggering Elliot's anxiety; I could see this happening again, although it would indeed be a bit of a retread. Maybe we'll see Elliot handling it a bit better with the coping mechanisms he's learning in therapy or counselling.

enchantedsleeper

Something fishy this way comes.

BookBeard

It's devoted entirely to worshiping the Librarian. She used to have a third one which handled self-esteem and remembering to buy printer paper, but she lost that ages ago.

BookBeard

Am I the only one who thinks Moray looks naked without her deely-bopper?

Alasdair Mackintosh

And unicorns are a legend. She's powered by myth and legend??

Duncan

I thought they died out in the Emu Wars.

Sebastian

I too must be a Moray

The Shadow's Lair

A+ pun!

Chelsea Watson

@Sean Kinlin • GDI SEAN

Miyaa

@Andje it seems she has one as a native function, as shown by her "hair" vibrating at the start of this sub-arc. But it seems to only be functional as audio-only which is why she needs the cam-bot for video.

Opus the Poet

Except Sgt. Schlock is silicon-based and Moray is water-based, somehow.

Opus the Poet

Enough to make solar a viable source of power commercially.

Opus the Poet

@Alacrity, some of us predate TNG, the comic book, TAS, and even TOS. Hell I predate most of the Space Program and about the same time as NASA.

Bill Marcum

They only come out at night, the lean and hungry type...

Bill Marcum

Andje, I think you might be remembering the old Google. QC seems to have capitalism, so presumably they still have enshittification of everything on the Internet,.

Trip Space-Parasite

I never realized that deeler-bobber was a technical term

PixelThis

Can't believe Jeph didn't title this one "The Moray You Know"

Fart Captor

I find it difficult to imagine Moray ever objecting to any form of social interaction.

BookBeard

Please tell me Moray consented to being interrogated *before* they handed the phone to the overzealous undergrad?

Bill Silvia

True. The mathematical deely-bobber in humans is located in the right cerebral cortex. Or maybe in the pituitary...or below the left kidney...or somewhere we don't even want to think about in the GI tract. Though there have been plenty of times when I seem to have left mine at home in my sock drawer.

Ursus Ridens

If they only come out at night, they must be undead unicorns: unicorpses.

kaitou

Greetings fellow Moray!

Drazi

I was thinking the same thing, his questions are all EXTREMELY valid.

Mandy Hoskins

I got that reference.

BookBeard

I interpret it as Moray giving the "off the top of her head" answers rather than "pulling out her 'phone' and looking it up". She probably could go looking for that information, but she's just having a conversation, and these may be things she's never bothered thinking about. Which is fair, a lot of us don't really understand how our bodies work either, and most of us just go along with it too.

Canahedo

booooooo!

Sammitch

Clinton has earned this

Bagge

Moray's front hair bobbin is made of LaTeX.

SMOOSH

Sean Kinlin

Wait... made of mostly water, doesn't really understand how their body works, sometimes has difficulty with math. Am... am I a Moray?

BookBeard

I don't think Clinton has EVER been happier.

Joseph Bonnar

I think Bubbles explains at some point how accessing digital info works for AI's from her point of view?, but you're point about Moray is my original one. In this universe different AI's experience access to the digital information side of things differently and subjectively, and one of the factors is if they care to access it or not, or even think of doing so in the moment if their personality doesn't fall in that direction. I can accept it but... At some point the idea they would effectively cut themselves off from what would be the font of all knowledge since their inception to me seems hard to believe. Moray is different, but she's still conceivably got that access if she wanted it... or rather wouldn't she have to opt out? Is the director not spawning her with at least a wireless hookup? IF SO WHY NOT? She has a tiny cam bot, but if she sticks around would she not buy a phone eventually? Would she not type questions into GoogleEquiv? Would she not take pictures and store them in a cloud based solution of servers in CubeTown? I hated the end of Battlestar Galactica too.

Andje Lewkowicz-Lalonde

Woob woob

Bradley Richard

It's an obscure type of music, like tritonal.

Carl Fink

she can't remember the technical term with it off

LH

Clearly she's powered by the invisible emu.

Ricardo Bittencourt

very trying

LH

I know!!! I want one!!

Atramors

I mean... in her defense, the morays are a means for The Director to communicate in a "human standard" protocol. I forget the page number, but when Claire met The Director, it was implied that, while he can speak and understand our languages, he doesn't necessarily comprehend them. Additionally, the morays don't seem to communicate with The Director in real time, it seems to be done through emails or some similar, inherantly delayed medium. There's also the apparent free will involved. While most moray units choose the be reabsorbed by The Director, they have been known to choose their own lives, often with hilariously tragic results. Our Moray seems to have developed a personality of whimsy, sure, she COULD commune with The Director to get all those answers, but she prefers to live in a state of blissful ignorance; mostly enjoying life as it comes, rather than stressing over the things that she can't control. I think the most important bit to remember about the A.I. in this universe is that, while largely still a mystery to Humans: They are, functionally, the same. Their thought processes aren't inherently faster than ours. Hannalore (it might have been Station) explained this to Marten and Marigold when they all visited for Dr. EEllicott-Chapman's birthday.

Atramors

typo: "traditonal"

Kai

No one else will get that reference.

Alacrity Fitzhugh

Plot twist: Moray farts unicorns. (but they run away too fast for her to see them before she thinks to turn around and look)

Mad Marie

Clinton in Cubetown, his mind blown

Captain Button

No one give her an Adventure or Space Core.

William Cole

Wait. So AI's experience of information is like... focus dependent? Moray is intelectualising these questions, but isn't looking for the answers she almost certainly has digital access too. Some of these questions would be in her user manual or whatever the equivalent is, at worst it would be a question for the hive mind, but are we truly to beleive that the Morays cant fucking ask them a question? The hoops i have to jump through to respect "Um, sort of , I think so"... it just has so many deep implications about AI

Andje Lewkowicz-Lalonde

look. i like them both. i even think they are a cute couple. but i'm not interested in another eliott anxiety relationship story at all. I wouldn't think that Clinton would be either. This would be the juxtaposition of his academic and practical interests intersecting with GASP a female presenting AI. If Eliot freaks out he's not a good partner for Clinton. Clinton would ALWAYS be interested in new AI lore more then almost anything else in the world.

Andje Lewkowicz-Lalonde

i-understood-that-reference dot gif But in temperament and... well, everything... the Morays are pretty diametrically opposed to Schlock

Nicolas Demers

ooh, good call!

Kenneth Carlile

Something's FISHY :)

Cute_Fuzzy

This is the winning comment

Alcaria Swain

The deely-bobber is a vital part of the mathematical process, this has been known since the time of Pythagoras.

Dean Reilly

The little webcam bot is adorable

Fart Captor

Now I want to know what the dealy-bobber on the back of her head does! Also, do different Morays get different dealy-bobber intelligence bits?

Brooks Moses

WOOB WOOB

Brooks Moses

Unicorns fart rainbows.

Yelling Bird

Tolerating, nothing. This is Moray. She seems to have only two modes, and this is clearly the excited one, not the distraught one. And we've seen her being happy about this sort of curiosity before, with the kid poking his arm through her.

Brooks Moses

I was sitting here thinking that maybe Clinton could end up dating Moray forgetting of course that he has a boyfriend. Now I think a potential storyline is the next time he’s with Elliott he’ll go on and on gushing about Moray, which will trigger his anxiety. This could be interesting.

Ron Hamann

QC AIs are really very human like. They, for the most part, don't have super intelligence or physical capabilities and many of them just aren't all that curious about how their bodies or minds work.

David Durant

Hope your day gets better

David Durant

SMOOSH

Not that Patrick Foltz

Oh Clinton is definitely going to Cubetown now. Might even sneak in the moving crate.

Miyaa

he certainly is

Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns

... Has anyone checked if the director has a taste for Ovalkwik? Or plasma weaponry?

Nicolas Dao-Phan

I'm having a shitty day and this made me feel a little better.

Great to see Clinton asking the important questions. I, too, have wondered how Moray works.

Andrew Mitchell

Would you prefer arithmetic logic pouf?

Frank Wales

Made of mostly water? Same!

Rob McBobson

We have met an AI whose function we understand... well, about as well as our own.

sunshine is a myth

Brendan Luster

D'awww!! I appreciate she is tolerating Clinton's obsessiveness and being polite and happy with it.

Shawn K. Younkin

I'm glad clinton can unload his nerd out on someone who likely won't judge him

KSib

Deely bobber. Highly technical term.

Zig Justice

oh clinton is trying

Tamara Macadam
