Giving In

Yeah I was figuring her problems with alcohol were because she hadn't been able to do it when younger and weed she's just used to being around

Am Queue

I believe that the companion AI role has evolved, but not gone away. After gaining a humanoid body Momo still considered herself to be a companion AI, describing it as being "ambassadors of their kind". https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2284

BookBeard

I have spent too many nights up past midnight due to opening an old strip and being unable to stop.

Clifton Royston

Are you saying there's trouble right here in River City?

prettydragoon

Definitely try it alone. I said that because in my experience, smoking after drinking makes people feel a LOT more drunk and not so high. Like the difference between beer drunk and tequila drunk. Bad decisions are made! ;)

Laura Curry

$9.99 per inch - Mr. Troopers pension plan!

Holly Nelson

Nah, that's what happens if you wrap a bight of rope the 'usual' way, tuck the loose ends through the loops of one end, then slide the 'cylinder' down to keep the ends in place. E.g.: https://imgur.com/a/FxGPhDj It's not a great way to store rope, but it's not impossible and it's uncommon, but not unheard of.

iko

If you want to try some weed, yes, I would recommend trying it by itself once or twice. Then you get a better idea on how it mixes with other things like a drink. I am not sure it really matters which comes first.

SilverbackRon

Yep, I clicked on that and kept going for nearly an hour.

SilverbackRon

Was absolutely waiting for Liz to say something like "I'm Dutch, remember? We practically INVENTED wiet!"

Amanda L

Is that the way? The times I have tried smoking it was after a few drinks, and I never seemed to feel anything from it. I thought I was just one of those people it doesn't affect. Should I try it alone?

Amanda L

It's an interesting point though. Are there *any* companion AIs left in the comic? It feels like it's a whole think that Jeph's quietly written out.

David Durant

maybe you just need to be a Broadway fan ...

Joe

no, no. Claaaaaaaire-ian, madam libraaaaarian ...

Joe

She could jump rope naked for cash. What did you think I meant?

Yelling Bird

No, Iris, you're going to want that rope with Willow later! Well, assuming it's soft and non-chafing.

Graydon Armstrong

No no no! Smoke THEN drink. Never the other way round!

Laura Curry

She did mention wanting to keep her glasses on, but not specifically how good her vision is without them. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2892 And we have occasionally seen her out and about without glasses, so I'm presuming she also has contacts. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2793

BookBeard

I think Claire might be nearly blind without her glasses. IIRC this might have been established somewhere around when she and Marten first slept together?

Clifton Royston

I assumed they were all renting off the same landlord.

David Durant

I am legally blind without glasses, but I still take them off sometimes.

Carl Fink

The closure of the taqueria implies that Iris may be between jobs at the moment, I hope she finds something that suits her soon.

Stephen Wells

This little "Name. Name. Name. *Nickname*" linguistic tic that Liz has is delightful.

Stephen Wells

She's wearing a turtle shibari harness under that shirt right now.

Stephen Wells

I'm still worried but for different reasons.

Stephen Wells

Iris, Iris, you know Willow would never kick you out.

Alasdair Mackintosh

gah, I gotta stop opening old strips unless I want to get sucked in for hours

Matti Känninen

I was assuming he sometimes wears contacts? And maybe she just prefers glasses to contacts

djellafine

Sean - I almost spit out my tea 😂

djellafine

If you aren't, then what's that rope for and why are you helping Iris with the rent? I might be interested in help with MY rent depending on your answer.

Ye Olde Phart

I dunno, this sounds like money for old rope to me

Andrew

This sounds like deep string theory

Andrew

Librari-ma'am?

Stephen Wells

"Can you nut?" "Can you not?"

Leak

So wait, if Clinton doesn't actually need glasses, does Claire?

Uniquitous

No, I don't think that's right, Nicholas. The wrapping loops would be bulging because rope needs room to bend back on itself. And the wrapping area is cylindrical.

Andrew Mitchell

It's possible that some of the bottom loops are completely wrapped.

Nicholas Palmer

The way that rope is drawn is physically impossible. The strands coming down should, at least approximately, match the loops going up.

Andrew Mitchell

They found that the connectors don't match back when they talked about it.

Carl G Knoblock

I sing of arms and the gremlin...

Captain Button

Boo. Hiss. Etc.

Holly Nelson

One thing to bear in mind is that the people she gives permission to are asking her for her permission. I suspect that she's inherited her mother's fearsome "mom vibes".

Joseph Bonnar

Miyaa, there is a strip, already posted (Bookbeard, of course) that shows Shibari. It' # 1302. Marten and certainly Veronica would be very much able to instruct Iris.

Joseph Bonnar

I rounded off a bit, but basically 1USD = 0.79 GBP, 20 shillings to the pound, 3 barleycorns to the inch.

BookBeard

Was Iris like a tall Roll?

Miyaa

Alas, either WolframAlpha does not know how to do that or I am not leet enough to perform that conversion.

Miyaa

Or 52.6 shillings per barleycorn.

BookBeard

That’s C$13.66 per inch or C$5.38 per centimeter or €3.65 per centimeter.

Miyaa

I don’t know what shibari is, but I presume it’s something that Iris, Marten, and Veronica (aka Madam Satanic Librarian, aka Marten’s mom) would be able to compare notes on.

Miyaa

Give Iris money 😤

Fart Captor

As for the job at Hex-Mex Pagan Taqueria, it seems like they both worked there until quite recently, since they only mentioned it being shut down when Willow applied at the coffee shop a couple (in-universe) days ago. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5100

BookBeard

IIRC, Iris was a groundskeeper at the college Willow & Yemisi attended and got captured by Willow's friend-making gravity.

William Cole

I'd help Iris out with that rent problem, but we'd be needing that rope... (CONSENTUALLY, before anyone says anything. I may be a bastard, but I'm not a fucking bastard.)

Yelling Bird

As long as it isn't shibarikubi...

kaitou

Only Cubetown personnel as far as I remember. Zlata, Moray, and Evanescent(?)

Nathan Kinsey

They met when Willow and Yemisi were in college (unclear how long ago), and at the time Iris was working as a groundskeeper. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4464

BookBeard

I'm not sure Marten is going to be on-board with the "Madam" part, given how he felt about Data-Mistress. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4934

BookBeard

We've seen her working in the kitchen in the same Burrito place Willow works / worked at. That was *long* time ago IRL but I have no idea how long ago it would be in-world (ask Book Beard). There was also the stand-in yoga teacher gig - but we don't talk about that.

David Durant

Has it ever been said what Iris does for a job? Maybe she was Willow's companion AnthroPC at one time?

PostRetroism

FYI Claire, Marten does know how to use that rope. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1302

BookBeard

Let Willow help!

allanfranta

She certainly has in the past, but not on this occasion.

BookBeard

Liz: "I can handle pot." Iris: "I would propose knot."

Sean Kinlin

It would be easier than her needing psilocybin with legalization and availability.

Carrie

How does one smoke oneself? Is that sort of an Ouroboros thing?

Sean Kinlin

😢😞

Carrie

Iris needs some help with making 🪢➰ pay her bills. Maybe Claire can get her a book on kinbaku and shibari so she can start running workshops every week and not have any more rent worries?

Carrie

She did, and happily got zen.

Carrie

It's only natural that she'd be protective of her own (adopted) daughter! (Has Claire been permissioning anyone besides Liz?)

William Cole

I'm actually pretty confused by the way the coils don't protrude from the bottom of the wrapped section. All we see is the free ends hanging down. So it seems like if anything, the coils go *right up to the bottom* of the outer wraps, but then that would slip off with any jostling.

Luke Meyers

Placing my bet now on weed evening her out and being a good fit for her.

Panic Blitz

I have a feeling that by the end of the night, one of Liz's arms will be on Clinton for that double arm hinted at earlier, and Clinton's hand will be on Liz.

William Davy

The way that bundle of rope is tied? Definitely.

Jennifer Doyle

Madam Librarian is Martin's Mom circa 431 https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=431

Not that Patrick Foltz

You know Iris has fallen on hard times when she starts selling off her BDSM kit...

Sammitch

Gearing up for her job in Cubetown which will be mostly that.

Captain Button

Am I the only one who's finding it a bit weird that Claire's started "giving her permission" to people who are people who are definitely capable of making their own (often terrible) decisions?

David Durant

If you're worried about Liz getting violent, it's really easy to dis-arm her...

Duke

I would be in no way surprised

David Durant

Might have to wake up Elliot after all to help with the clean up.

SpazzyC

Iris is into shibari?

Michael Boettger

Oh Iris. They're much better ways to use rope to make rent money

Robert Spremulli

I was worried when I only saw the Patreon caption in the notification.

Bill Silvia

Claire never got to smoke herself, did she?

Michael Chui

I can relate to Iris.

Andrea Andrew

After "Clanton" and "Madam Librarian" it's obvious everyone's gonna get a nickname by the end of this party.

ValdVin

Conveniently already in a noose shape, nice touch.
