All the rodents around here appear to have toxoplasma gondii which makes them attracted to cat pee, and by association I think, less fearful of humans. I first noticed the behavior coming home one night when I saw a rat, on it's hind legs, watching a cat, then moving towards it. The cat seemed bemused, to anthropomorphize a bit, notice me and got out of the way as I went by. I doubt it went well for the rat. A neighbor, sitting on his front steps smoking, watched 2 rats come out of the hedges and snuffle about, they had none of the usual caution one would expect even when he got up. Too many cats in the neighborhood to worry about it much, my dogs raise the alarm if one gets in the garage and I find remains left behind on occasions. Some of these are dropped from above by the hawks and owls that live around here and the vultures do clean up. The cycle of life...
